fun fact: in my homeland we call it Cunaguaro, which is also the common name for the ocelot. It's also called "tigrillo" which means tiny/cute tiger :)

here in Brazil it's called "gato-do-mato" which, if translated to English would mean something as "cat of bushes/bush-cat" or maybe "cat of scrubs/scrub-cat" atcually, "mato" has no specific translation for English however, it refers to those wild generic grassy vegetation. extra: ocelots here are called "jaguatirica" and margays "gato-maracajá"

Oncilla is precisely what it's called in English. I don't know why she's labelled the title "Tiger Cat", they don't even have tiger stripes nor is that a popular nickname.

The northern tiger cat has recently been recognised as actually being 2 species, the NTC & a new species, the clouded tiger cat, which lives in cloud forests in the Andes & has a distinct geographic range there that is separated from the NTC's range to the east (the recognised geographic range of both species is now much reduced from the range shown here, & both are sadly under serious threat from habitat loss).

I thought the kodkod was the smallest cat in the Americas? The kodkod or guiña (Leopardus guigna) live primarily in central and southern Chile. They have round faces, really fluffy tails, stockier build, and are spotted kind of like a cheetah. They recently photographed some melantistic individuals!

They're close relatives and overlap in size. From what I remember the Guigna averages smaller, but the absolute record goes to the Oncilla, as the smaller adults are smaller than Guigna.

I just spotted one that looked like this on our deck this afternoon. Unable to take its photo though. It looked at me before it ran way. We're in Calabasas, Californis where mountain lions are ern crossing our freeways, and coyotes in our neighborhood are common since we have hillside.

In Mexico we have Tigrillos, Ocelotes and Jaguarundis ... this last ones are like the Ocelot but with a brown plain color very much like a small brown Panther....

I wonder if tiger cats will start working together, alot of pressure to adapt from nature and it seems like the only real way to save themselves, atleast if they want the territory ocelots have. They can probably make it in the unprotected areas, but I love the thought of gangs of tiger cats jumping ocelots.

The name Tiger Cat is so weird. At least Oncilla sounds like Onça, which makes more sense because it is more like a tiny Onça instead of a tiny Tiger. Here in Brazil it is commonly called Gato-do-Mato, something like Bush Cat.
