Although bicycle frames and motorcycle frames are often quite different, they both have to be aligned and come out straight. The Tiger Cub is getting its share of attention. 🤓🏁

I've learned so much watching your videos. I just made an Amazon order for tools and supplies. When I first came up on your videos, I was looking for an alternative brazing Flux for silver jewelry. I have customers who have been asking me since 2006 if I was going to start working silver again. Since I've been watching your vids, I've been sitting here with my jewelers saw, fabricating parts for my next line. I haven't had time to do jewelery because I've been busy learning new things to fit into my previous career as a Facilities supervisor. I've had my CDL, can build a motor, weld, braze spent 8 years as a first responder. Now I've decided to kick back and retire at 55. The other day my brother asked if I was going to fabricate some sterling silver parts for a bike. He watched as I pierced and manipulated a sterling plate to snake around the cane ive been making for myself. I remember watching, 52 years ago as a man cut a pipe and brazed it. I was 4 years old. Everytime I pick up a torch to heat something, I think of that. I've always been creative and I see how things work, how molecules are supposed to flow. It makes things easier for me to learn and it really helps when I'm tutoring computers, painting or any other craft. I've always got one apprentice and this summer I've been searching. I haven't been out much since I've gotten back from my tour two years ago. I really think I've retired to early.

It's a Unifold! (Yeah, right. It's actually an adaptor, but that would be damning a work of beauty). As a world class pedant I knew, obviously, that manifold was incorrect, but Mr. Brodie is a nice guy and he's doing his best. Which, I might add, is a hell of a lot better than mine or thine... He's Canadian and he doesn't end every sentence with 'eh'. That makes him an intellectual, (English born, it goes without saying). And a dashed fine maker of things...

Or, for others to witness the value of humility and self reflection when one discovers one has made a ‘mistake’, even if that ‘mistake’ is actually using a term which is in common usage, and therefore has become convention. If you Google ‘single carburettor mounting’, right at the top is a list of items for sale including single carburettor manifolds. RU-vid may be a pedant’s and troll’s playground, but there’s no good reason to allow them to win. Peace

Details, details, details. You aren't the only "fool" who always new it as a manifold - sure it's not "correct", but at least we know what you're talking about - more fool them.
@Alanbataar
@Alanbataar 2 года назад
Paul, thank you as always. Another word for the manifold might be spigot, although I normally think of those as protruding from the casting of the head. RE: broken part... it it even remotely possible that your fender tabs might have been a carbon steel, something that hardens? You can check this by doing both a spark test (look for feathery sparks) and an arc test - just light up on a corner of the material in question and let it melt slightly. The relatively cool mass of the part will chill the melted spot fast enough to harden. Then you can test it with a file - if the file cuts the welded spot, it's low-carbon. If it skates, it's high carbon. This trick works for determining the grade of cast iron as well. RE: masking tap around the fender. That's completely functional, and I'm not criticizing it whatsoever, but will add that I keep a flexible cloth tailors tape measure in my tool box for just such occasions. They're trivially inexpensive, so cheap you can't afford not to have one. :)
@paulbrodie
@paulbrodie 2 года назад
Thank you Alan. Who knows what they use to make cold rolled these days? Maybe something hard got tossed into the mix. It was sold as "cold rolled" mild steel. I will test like you suggested. I do have a cloth tape. It was in the house. I was in the shop...

I have to wonder if the seven and a half pound fuel tank which resulted from the need to use heavy gauge sheet metal required to make a tank that would effectively take the place of the frames backbone bar and would not have its seams and welds be prone to cracking or splitting from the loads it’s subjected to was worth raising of the motorcycles center of gravity for the additional fuel capacity gained. In any event the design of the fuel tank and its use as a stressed member on the Tiger Cub is certainly an interesting design idea.

Whitworth threads are stronger than UNF because the Whitworth threads have rounded crest and roots. The UNF do not control this and can be sharp. Due to the rounded root the cross section is slightly larger and therefore stronger.

Cold rolled bright mild steel is not what it used to be. Too many impurities from recycled metal? "Chinesium"? I don't know, but I used to make small brackets from 1 1/2" x 1/8" BMS flat bar until they started cracking. Have to use hot rolled 40mm x 3mm now....

You might be right. I was very surprised to have cold rolled crack when bending. Things have changed for sure.

You know, dear Mr. Brodie, I am shure that there are plenty of people, more knowledgeable then you outthere, but if you tell them, to fabricate an exhaust manyfold, they are uncapable of doing it. I have seen you on a video, where you built a complete motorcycle, was it a Henderson ? only having an old photograph of it. I would like to know, how many people on earth can build such a masterpiece ? So forget the manifold guy, and I would still call it a manifild, what the heck !
@paulbrodie

It was an Excelsior, and we do have several videos on them. I just like to fabricate things, and if I can inspire people to start using their hands to start making stuff, the I am very happy.

@@paulbrodie Yes, I saw all the vids now. You did quite an amazing job on that Excelsior, if I had the money, I would buy one, just to look at it, cause it is a piece of art ! I hope that plenty of joungsters get inspired by you.

The term ‘manifold’ for single carburettor inlet mounting is in common usage, and therefore has become convention. If you Google ‘single carburettor mounting’, right at the top is a list of items for sale including single carburettor manifolds. RU-vid may be a pedant’s and troll’s playground, but there’s no good reason to allow them to win. Peace

What about a pipe cutter? It’s just an intake.

I don't think I understand your question. What about a pipe cutter? This is a frame modification. What does that have to do with the intake?
@lawrencefranck9417
@lawrencefranck9417 2 года назад
@@paulbrodie using a pipe cutter for a strait or square cut. Intake manifold is for conjoined intake feeding multiple cylinders. A single cylinder would just be an intake.

Sir, if you are going to comment on the two different types of tubing you are using here perhaps you should explain to your viewers what the difference is. ERW and DOM are both welded tubes. ERW stands for Electric Resistance Welded. The tube is formed using a flat drawn through a set of progressive rollers to form the round shape and then the ends are forced together and current is passed through at the juncture point causing it to fuse much like a spot weld. DOM is made exactly the same way however the excess seam material is cut away using a scarifier. It is then Drawn Over a Mandrel (DOM) which causes the seam area to have the same metallurgical and structural characteristics throughout its length. As a result, DOM is considered to be superior to ERW since there is no seam to form a stress riser or have inconsistencies in the material characteristics. Seamed pipe is made much the same way but pipe uses a material that has a much lower tensile strength and a lower rate of plasticity which allows less deformation before failure.

Tubing is measured OD Pipe is measured ID (nominal) I can't imagine you overlooked the one trait that distinguishes the two....
@oh8wingman
@oh8wingman 2 года назад
@@jimurrata6785 That's true provided you are dealing with imperial measurement. Metric uses the OD of pipe which is why one must be very careful when dealing with small bore fittings because there are degrees of overlap. In addition, imperial pipe is only measured by the nominal ID until 12". After that it goes by OD. I have to know all of this because I am a pipe fitter.

Thanks for setting that straight. I hope all viewers read your comment. We only have so much time in the videos, so it's just not possible to explain everything, but we do our best to explain the "process" of making something. If more people start fixing or making stuff, that is success for us :)

@@paulbrodie Yeah, you said you were criticized for calling it a manifold when the term 'Mani" means many, so I facetiously would call it a "mono"-fold where mono means alone, one or single. ;)
