I've heard Butch Harmon say that Tiger knew everything he had to about the swing, and that all he had to do was be his eyes and watch to make sure he was getting in all the right positions. After Tiger left Harmon you can see through his swing that his other coaches didn't follow this trend, and instead changed Tigers swing to reflect their own image. NOTE: 1998 Tiger had the best swing I've ever seen, so much less 'noodley' than prior and not as ridgid/tight than after.
Amazing how good his swing was early in his career before starting to work with swing coaches. It’s probably a life learning experience that I hope he transfers that knowledge onto his son. Swing your own swing. What a great swing his son has.
Fantastic analysis had no idea it was so bad in the HH day's, obviously this was posted before the crash, Tiger was playing great golf again considering all the surgeries he had, no one is more determined than Tiger, wonder if he'll come back and what a wonderful free flowing swing his son has
Exellent analysis about Tiger swing changes 👍👍 Offcource top level player and coaches. We can't know what was happening behind the scenes and now we can only see the results. Sometimes it feels they just teach golf and forget human anatomy. Great to see that Tiger is still able play high level golf. Amazing comeback ✌😀
Fantastic analysis, thoroughly enjoyed that, wow his hip clearance and space through the hitting zone was really something in the early days, I think Harmon was a good coach, I think he declined making any significant changes to Dustin Johnson’s unorthodox swing because it worked so well for him (?), seems almost criminal to take Tiger’s early swing and mess with it as much as HH did
I agree Simon. Then HH writes a book about him revealing all his private details 🙈🙈🙈.... and cashing in at the same time - unbelievable! Yeah you wouldn’t change DJ! - Thanks for posting 👍👍
Great video Craig! The H/H swing caused massive problems, but I think everything in his personal Life went wrong at that time as well. Good to see the New Tiger back and happy in Life.
Analysis of the Foley swing is spot on...What a disaster. I have to object to the Haney critique though. There was a lot (well documented) issues with the Driver under Haney. I think injuries & inability to adapt to new driver/shaft tech (which requires attack angle changes) was a bigger problem than his positions. My primary contention with your Haney analysis is that you avoid the vast improvement in his iron/wedge play. His new action/path, along with the neutral positions made him undeniably the best iron player ever. He could hit any shot, shape, flight, # on demand with precision. His iron swing 06’ to 08’ was absolute perfection & much better than under Butch.
Thanks for posting Jimmy I do appreciate it 👍 The golf played around 2000 was the best golf ever played. He won the US open by 15 shots! - think about that just for a second...... He won the British open by 8 shots .....😳 He was second in driving distance behind John Daly ( freak of nature) And it’s the lowest scoring average of all time. Even back when the equipment and balls where inferior- that’s amazing! He drove the ball so far and so straight hitting over 71% of Fairways - but his mistakes where much better. He was always a amazing iron player and this skill develops anyway with time as players mature through years of practice and touring their distance control and shaping improved in their prime.
@@CraigHansonGolf - can’t disagree there. I just think Tiger did actually make a lot of improvements in his positions & attack angles under Haney that really manifested in his iron game. Plus it’s really understated how technology evened the playing field. Tiger’s distance gap with old tech (& short game prowess) is what made untouchable in the 2000 run. If SG existed then, his ‘off the tee’ stats would have been laughably good, but his iron stats would have been above average but not particularly elite. That flipped after the swing changes. In a perfect world, if Tiger could have somehow kept his Butch driver swing but Haney iron technique... the 25-30 majors that people predicted would have manifested. If you hear Tiger talk about it, he couldn’t keep the move that Butch taught because it torn up his left knee/Achilles. That’s really why he made the change, along with wanting to get rid of the hook off the tee (Was always a little shut, across the line with Butch), then finally the inevitable clash of ego’s with Butch.
I made a comment about that. I love Tiger’s Butch swing but there’s no denying that his iron/approach game was in a whole ‘nother galaxy under Haney. Each one of those two eras had different advantages. The commonality? Putting.
His harmon swing was close to perfection. But I actually liked his 97 masters swing more. Technically, it wasn’t as good but the slow tempo backswing to the explosive through swing was poetry and power combined. I really wish we knew why he changed to Haney, the real reason!
I loved that 97 masters swing more as well. Mark Omera was his best friend and started winning majors in the late 90s and was being coached by Haney he was in Tigers ear 👂 a lot. There’s a lot of interesting things that happened. Tigers left foot used to move, slip or change positions through the ball. What we have found out recently through experience of players swinging well over 120 mph that this lead foot needs to turn and move out of the way to take pressure off the knee to save the knee. Tiger was taught to stop the foot from moving. At those speeds that will tear a knee to pieces over time.
@@CraigHansonGolf I’ve heard that story. Another one was Butch was becoming a little to big for his boots and would take full credit for Tigers success. Tiger didn’t like that and wanted to prove he didn’t need him to win, so fired him. That’s what I heard anyway. Funny that Hank believed Tiger was a better iron player with his method but accepted Butch’s method made Tiger a better driver. Either way they were much better than what Foley did to him. But as we know Tiger could use any players swing and get the most out of it. I enjoy your analysis Craig, cheers
I agree. 97-2001 was the best golf swing ever. Haney/foley era were just horrible. Had so many problems driving the ball. If he would danced with the one that brung him, like u said-25 plus majors. Cost him $100’s of millions and his health messing with it. The great awing changes have been to correct problems-hogan with his hook, price and Faldo to get more control and pressure proof their swings, Most of these swing overhauls at that level have not been successful that I know of. Who all can u think of that made massive swing changes successfully besides hogan, the two nicks? Spieth is getting worse, Dechamblau did some great things at the us open, but is he going to be consistent? I think Harmon’s great secret is he gets these guys believing in what they got and only does minor tweaks, not massive reconstructive surgery.
Tiger didn’t have major swing problems so such a massive overall wasn’t warranted during the Haney, foley era IMO. Butch didn’t make big changes to DJ, Fowler, Mickey, Scott etc and his son Claude seems to follow that line. They all got better with him tho. I can’t think of anyone that got worse with Butch. Seve fell off the planet working with Leadvetter. Wie swung better at 15 than now with lead. Lydia Ko doesn’t seem as dominant with the A swing. I would have to look that one up tho.
You can’t change dominating pattern. A leopard can’t change its spots. There’s been many players that have improved their ball striking but not with huge overhauls. There’s a line in the sand when is crossed it’s almost impossible to get back. It’s like to much thinking to much change. It’s seems like the magic is taken out and there’s to much thinking and it becomes habit forming that type of thinking. Dangerous ground - tread wearily. Hunter Mahan is another that’s gone. One of the worlds best ball strikers. Laid off, strong club face, incredible angles , fast body what a ball striker he was!!- to a more cupped left hand and slower body 😃🙊🙊🙊😆... Foley again. Maybe the New coach can get him back. Why fix pure ball Striking?
Yeah at that level, tread very very lightly. The guy won 4 straight majors and u completely overhaul his swing?! Wtf?! A weekend hacker that can’t break 90-100, sure completely overhaul that because every single thing is bad. Tiger, DJ, fury’s guys like that-GTFOH. Brilliant video mate. Glad u called it like it is too. Might hurt some feelings, but it’s true. When a guy takes the best player we ever saw and then the player can’t find a fairway, he fucked up. No other way to call it lol. Awful
Just watched this again. So on point. I really think he would have at least 20 majors if he had stuck with what him and Butch had working. I think he got caught up in the aesthetics of the swing too. Who knows man? I could watch his 2000 era swing all day. Best blend of power and accuracy we have ever seen.
@@jeffrichardson4941 he won 6 majors under Haney and had a higher winning percentage, plus he statistically became a much better iron player during that period. Like so many others you’re holding up his Harmon swing as the ‘perfect swing’ but if it was then why was his iron play better under Hank? Just pure bias.
As a pro coach, you should know that Adam Scott admitted that his first pro swing was modeled on Tiger, and they also shared the same swing coach. I'm disappointed you don't know that.
Tiger’s win percentage was higher with Haney and it’s a statistical fact that he became a better approach/iron player with the Haney swing. I agree with some of the analysis but the fact is both Harmon and Haney swings were among the most successful in golf history.
I appreciate your opinion. The thing is tiger could make it work. He was in his prime. There’s lots of opinions I understand that 👍 We will will never know. But the swing from Harmon was something I have never seen before it was unbelievable
@@CraigHansonGolf Yes we all have our preferences. I love both swings for different reasons. My only gripe is that the Haney swing is too often unfairly maligned considering Tiger's record in that stretch.
Great stuff! 2000 tiger is the greatest swing of all time for me. Not a fan of Haney think tigers talent still won in spite of Haney’s coaching (tiger also holed every putt he looked during this period) Foley ruined Tigers swing and his back in my opinion- What was he thinking with that clown?!?! He would have 20 odd majors but he wasn’t content with Butch - unbelievable!!
That’s a very good question Foley had the chance to move the swing back to what Tiger has now done closer to the original motion. But he made it narrow more shaft lean. Much more head lowering which puts massive pressure on the spine. Haney turned his grip into a 1 knuckle grip and heaps of club face rotation changed the complete body motion. They both probably think they did a great job - Haney writes a book about Tiger telling the world everything personal about him and cashing in 🙈 Wow now that’s a nice guy 🙈🙈 how’s that for character
@@CraigHansonGolf Does Foley not know what he's doing then? His is instruction is a more centered swing like stack and tilt to save your back but I guess by your assessment it was breaking Tigers back -- and I totally agree. At least Foley is more of gentlemen than Hank and his ex Caddie Stevie when Tiger cuts tie. Both Hank and Stevie aired their dirty laundry about Tiger instead of being grateful that Tiger made them both RICH!
Nice one. Noticed Tiger's Driver set up in his 2008 US Open win... Struggled constantly, way too close to the ball compared to circa 2000. And he won in 2008 because his shortgame, putting and mid to high irons were the best. It’s why he got injured that’s the question - he was working on moving down with his head with Foley - further down! - even further down then it already was - This puts incredible pressure on the spine through time. Try yourself and drop your head heaps on the downswing you’ll feel it in your back on the follow through
Thanks for posting. And yes there really is a lot of poor tuition. It’s everywhere actually. The people doing it however are convinced that it’s great.... get enough sheep 🐑 and they all follow
@@CraigHansonGolf Its' not crap though. Read Haney's book. Tiger had 20% of his ACL intact after 2002 and played relatively poorly in 2003 and 2004. He couldn't swing that way anymore, that's why he moved to Haney. He actually played great under Haney, but he started focusing too much on weightlifting and shagging women. He would've broken the record under Haney if he stayed focused on golf.
Craig, Do you think Tiger will be able to make a meaningful come back after his injuries ? Can you check your Instagram messages, I am having problems signing up to your World Class Golf Instructions because of password issues. Thanks
Tiger's swing in the 2000 era under Butch Harmon was the greatest swing in the history of golf. He won 9 times that year then 4 majors in a row and of course won the US Open at Pebble Beach by 15 shots which is arguably the most dominant performance in the history of sports by an individual athlete. Tiger said he changed his swing because "you always want to get better". The problem was that swing already was as perfect as a swing could get. Very foolish.
