Tim, I sure enjoyed watching that! You have a highly skilled professional crew running some topnotch equipment, gitterdone! It just occurred to me that we are watching probably well over a million dollars worth of equipment run. You and your families hard work and dedication deserve the rewards of success.

Those machines are amazing . I’ve ran cats all my life in steep terrain D9s and 10s on hillside jobs in California so I know what it’s like in steep areas and I know that camera doesn’t capture the true angles of the terrain that’s really there . Awesome video and thanks for sharing .

If it looks that steep on camera it twice as bad in person. Good call on not letting someone else take the gravy and you doing the rest they don't want to do. Companies will exploit you if you cave into doing it for them. Great video Tim.

Bunch of guys here in NW Oregon are welding on grouser extensions on the bunchers so that they can cut more and more of that steep ground by machine instead of with hand fallers. We have to same issues mixing the good with the bad. You have to have enough ground based ground to support the cable yarding.
@jaredskeans5385
@jaredskeans5385 7 лет назад
They're doing more then the 8 to 10 inch single bar extensions, they're also doing the cable assist seen it done on a few jobs.

Cleaning up for & fixing mistakes of other loggers is a no-win situation. Good to hear that you are firm in the way you handle those situations. Maybe the land owners need to address that issue with better wording in their legal contracts so it states that there are significant financial penalties for leaving trees standing that should have been cut -- that is if they actually even bother with written contracts or just handle awarding jobs by a handshake.

Oh goodness, what an operator Derrick is with a truly amazing machine. I cannot begin to imagine what the view is in the cab when working such steep slopes especially when it lifts the rear or side of the tracks. I am amazed how stable it is carrying and swivelling with a big heavy tree and what it must feel like sliding down that slope under load! Equally surprising is how well it climbed up that slope when he had finished going down. I have one basic question: Is there a specific reason why he is cutting going down hill rather than reverse or is it just to make it easier to extract the logs up the hill?

Tough working conditions, slow but persistent! About how many gallons of fuel do the skidders, loaders, cutters (just on site work) do you average using per day or week? Thanks for showing the less than normal working conditions you have today! ....13
@KCautodoctor
@KCautodoctor 7 лет назад
Don't forget to also add in the diesel for the log trucks (more expensive due to on-road use tax automatically added at pump versus off-road diesel). And their fuel use is going to be alot more varied due to having to got to different mills for different loads
@arkansas1336
@arkansas1336 7 лет назад

I take it this is public land? I don't think taking out the understory so the buncher doesn't get hemmed in on steep ground would go over too well otherwise as it sets the next harvest back a decade or two. Unless it's all undesirables growing underneath.
@cotontop3
@cotontop3 7 лет назад
+Digby O'Dell this will be planted and thinned again in 12 years and clear cut again in 22. Here in southeast timber grows fast and it's no different than a farm crop, grow it and mow it again and again.
