In this clip I align the overheads and room mics with the snare drum using the Waves InPhase plugin to increase the tightness of the drum sound. Phase alignment on drums can work wonders on a drum mix.This is a segment from a live stream video I did setting up a mix for SkaBurst.
Hope you enjoy :)

*One thing to note* , if you leave inPhase on stereo mix you will be mixing the sidechain signal with the main signal. You should click the alpha button at the bottom, or turn off the side chain when it's not being used. Often I just use this to measure the milliseconds and then move it in the daw as the plugin is a little CPU hungry!

This is the clearest and most concise explanation I have seen on the topic. Thanks!

@@domminney I do have one question and I haven't really had much time to watch other videos to figure it out: When I am trying to correct phase on multiple tracks (ie. snare, tom, floor, kick, etc.), can one instance of InPhase be used on the channel I am aligning the others to, or do I need multiple instances, one for each track; or am I approaching this from the wrong direction?

@@julesplace9107 You'd need one for each track and have a singular reference point. For example you could use the snare drum to time align the overheads, and then use the overheads to time align the toms, which would use the snare as the main reference point. I'll be honest I don't think this is really needed as close mics tend to be bang on, so I'd just concentrate on time aligning rooms and overheads with the snare or bass drum, then maybe shifting them out a fixed amount if you want to create space, but in a controlled way so you avoid phase problems. I'll do another video on it I think.

Wow I love the flexibility of this plugin. Though it seems the set up is a bit hard to figure out in some DAWS.

How can I get this plug in to work? I’m trying to get my bass drum and snare drum tracks to match with the overhead mic but every time I play it on stereo mode both copy the same overhead track.
@domminney
@domminney 2 года назад
you need to select to only output the main signal not a mix, either that or turn your sidechain off when it's aligned.

I'm still finding it difficult to see what the advantage of using this plug in is, compared to the old school method of just nudging your regions to match up and flipping if necessary? Any opinions? I just zoom in and nudge all close mics out to the overheads, you can bring rooms in of ya want, or not, just flip. Boom done. Am I missing something? It's a lot less CPU hungry!

It produces the same results but I find it a little more accurate myself, and if I freeze the tracks it doesn't take more CPU. I also don't use it every time, I've done 20 years of mixing without using it, but I recently bought it so I used it for the sake of the video as I hoped some would find it interesting.

This plugin also gives you the ability to address phase coherence in the transient itself. Somthing you did not showcase in the video. For instance if you HPF a kick it will alter the phase of part of the transient. You could then use INPHASE to address this.
