except what makes me sad is that there are so many vines I revined or liked from small creators that never made it into the famous RU-vid compilations and have been erased forever and I will never see again.
Yeah. Those vine compilations have only the good vines. People forget that before the app shut down, a lot of the content on vine was trash and people started growing tired of it. That's why it shut down in the first place. Someday TikTok will shut down and people will be posting videos with titles that say, "TikToks that cured my depression (rip TikTok)" with people commenting, "Omg I miss TikTok 😢" "RIP TikTok"
Racism, homophobia, ableism, this app goes off hard with this stuff. Last week I saw a challenge that involved making fun of disabled people, that shit was a challenge wtf.
The problem with Tik Tok is that it uses “sounds” so if someone makes a bomb ass joke they do get the credit but there’s gonna be 100+ more videos of ppl just using their sound to make the exact same joke. Also guaranteed the original creator of the joke will be overshadowed by whoever is the prettiest person to use their sound
I agree. While I don't have tiktok there are a lot of reposted videos that I have come across on twitter and insta. All these short clips not only each use the same "sound" but I've seen various amounts of the tiktoks created by different people wearing down to similar outfits, hairstyles, and recording and editing their clips verbatim at least 10 times by now. It's weird and I feel it's really taking away from the originality. It does sucks that people considered socially more acceptable or prettier usually receive the credit and sometimes end up not giving credit.
@@thedkjourneyyy To be fair at least TikTok the app does most of the time credit the original video or some creators will do it themselves. As for Instagram and twitter...i find that some of these owners of meme pages specifically will cut out any of the creators name or will not even bother to credit them while also bashing TikTok in the same breathe..
There are SO many tik toks out there that have “vine energy” as the kids call it. The algorithm once it learns what you like is amazing. The two massive issues I’ve witnessed are the multiple forms of racism (stealing IP from creators of color without credit, keeping racist tik toks up but banning or blocking the tik toks that call out the racism, etc) AND horrendous cyber bullying. The comments I see on the video of a 15 year old girl just dancing are so so cruel. otherwise though, amazing amazing app. There is something for everyone.
That’s true some of the bullying is horrific. Like at first I thought a lot of it was funny because it was mostly jokes, then I saw comments with thousands of likes telling kids to kill themselves
@@Pr0d3gi but it's absolutely unchecked and noticably wayyy more toxic. Bc you're exposed to strangers vs on IG and Snapchat when it's usually people you have to face
ben but the good side of vine at the time was harder to find because the popular page wasn’t curated depending on the person like the for you page for TikTok is.
Bailey D. idk, for me it is difficult to find good content in tik tok, but my point is not that there is better content in vine, my point is that this specific argument doesn’t convince me (sorry for my english)
Actually no. While that is one of the factors, the biggest reason was the parent company Twitter had so many layoffs within the company and one of those subsidiaries was Vine. There were no admins to run the app and keep up on updates so they decided to shut down the app completely.
I got vine in it’s early days and I still had the app downloaded when they deleted it. I also got tiktok a few months before the name changed from musically. so I kinda watched vine go from it’s glory days to the end and I watched tiktok go from a weird app with only old people and furries to a rebranded, well established app. I don’t think you can really compare the two because the fyp on tiktok caters to the users preferences, but, tiktok is definitely a better designed app and allows for more variety. vine was good and is more iconic, but the app just wasn’t as good as tiktok... obviously because no one used it in the end.
Yes! However, my biggest problem with Tik tok is people who frequently “work the system” and have figured out the algorithm to the T, duets allow people to easily “steal” other people’s content. You can remove the “duet” tag and the video then counts as your own. I’ve seen countless videos of white people duetting black creators content and just nodding their head and getting more likes than the original creator. I’ve seen people literally just watch the video and “react” and remove the og creator’s @ which prevents people from being able to view and the original content easily. It sucks man. But otherwise the app is great, the variety of content is awesome, and it’s nice to have your fyp specifically designed for your interests
that is true and i agree with you but atleast you can still click on the audio and find the original video, something that you couldn't do on vine. but it is very annoying to see ppl get credit without putting in any effort
My issue with Tik Tok is that even though there is a ton of stuff on it other than minors trying to be attractive, the most popular stuff is hot white teenagers, which feels like a lot of oversexualization and exploitation of children. I also think it's really toxic that it provides a very real and direct way for kids to measure themselves via views/likes/followers, and while that's true of every social media platform, it's particularly true of Tik Tok because it as an app is targeted toward children, and I've seen very real mental health implications for teenagers that I know in real life. Even if there is funny content on the platform, that's just a huge glaring issue to me.
It’s weird af when instagram accounts post TikToks and don’t even credit them. Like they actual go through the effort to cut out the credits instead of just leaving it there. That’s low
I mean, it's way easier to pirate crap than it used to be before the internet, so why not? Doing a little crop to take out someone's name is way easier than doing whatever sort of film bullshit you had to do when the game was pirating pre-digital movies
imo tiktok is the evolved version of vine, its like internet humor 3.0 and is even more meta and the kids on tiktok have grown up with internet content even more than us, like usually vine was way more random/absurd humor/physical comedy (which was great and new) but tiktok has all of it - it’s vine, twitter, youtube, musically, and tumblr put into one platform, which is like paradise and literal hell rolled into one lmao but like you said the algorithm leaves a little bit more of a chance for diversity and the personal stories of ppl , creative stuff, and like ~political commentary (good AND hellish) are way more of a thing than on vine and thats cool. The similarity to vine like you said as well is the « home » feeling when you get a window into someone else’s everyday life. but the racism, popularity of bad content by rich white kids, very questionable stuff is thill there too yea .. the big trends in formats that everyone does to me is sort of twitter-like, that can be both iconic and annoying but i think yeaaa its pointless to compare it to vine cause vine is outdated now and it had its time
9:12 ... Literally how I feel about seeing my content stolen all over Tik Tok. That depressing dread of knowing everyone's getting credit for your work and downloading it as their "original audio," getting millions of views. Vine was trash too. Had my shit stolen on there for yearssss and people didn't now I was the "I apologize for the inconvenience of not giving a fuck" meme lol. I remember how many times people got exposed on there for straight up stealing entire skits from smaller creators. Tik Tok has some funny ass people on there for sure. Funny people will exist on any platform. But for the most part, Tik Tok definitely normalizes being a biter. People will make "remixes" to your content which are literal just ripoffs and redubs and get more famous than you. Take dances without credit. And of course it's always the Black creators that get the short end of the stick being the originators of these dance challenges.
also with tik tok not only can you find really funny videos because of the algorithm, but ive also learned a lot about history, science, culture, math, cooking and more. the whole platform just has a lot more variety and creativity.
I stopped the video toward the end so I don't know if you mentioned it but tik tok has that same problem with leaving behind black creators and it comes from the dances. Ik the girl who made the savage dance has had her dance replayed and popularized by white people but she barely gets any credit for it
Isn't she literally in the official lyrics video? The fuck? EDIT: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EOxj2ROIxok.html - And people are literally talking about being proud of her being in the video.
@@exoticeditz8863 No, I think it's pretty obvious. Tiktok made sure to not repeat the same mistakes that Vine did, which would eventually lead to its demise.
Vine will forever have a special place in my heart, a lot of its references gave birth to a ton of different phrases that are still being used today. But TikTok is an overall better app, since it’s more modified than vine, but iconic vines remain funnier to me.
This is gonna sound cheesy as heck but something so diff from vine is that sometimes tik toks genuinely get me IN MY FEELS, like watching an old guy make his wife breakfast or a family celebrate graduation in their living room or a group of friends vibing to music in their car and like the next vid is usually something stupid and equally great like some kid falling off a trampoline or a garlic bread recipe or friggen Addison Rae but I genuinely don’t remember feeling so emotionally connected to vines back in the day
Can we just appreciate the fact that Nathan always has his own opinion about things and don't just follow what everybody else thinks. I cannot express enough how much I appreciate your content and your mindset!
Just wanted to mention that vine had a huge problem with bad content. I remember not using it as a kid cause there was vids with extreme gore or straight up live leak vids. Also there was ALOT of porn memes similar to the moaning vids but instead there would be straight porn. I don’t recall vine ever doing anything about it.
Even if Vine died Thomas Sanders is my all time favorite Viner (or ex-Viner) because his Vines are legitimately funny and for the most part relatable even if they're 6 seconds long.
i mean, yeah, but it's kind of easy to be better than something when you're taking that thing and improving upon it. tik tok likely wouldn't exist without vine showing there was a market for short form videos. it's like saying modern bicycles are better than penny-farthings. like, yeah, i guess??
My gf literally wrote a grad school paper on tiktok She personally doesn't like the app cuz it's constantly throwing content at you with no obvious way to stop it without exiting the app she finds it overwhelming
I've been watching you forever and I will watch any video you make. I especially like the commentary videos, they're always so good. You deserve more hype!
i started watching tik toks when the cringey ones trended everywhere in sept/oct 2018 and loved the ironic jokes ppl posted back then, now i've kept it eve since and am addicted
I never get bored of ur videos like it kinda blows my mind I can listen to u talk for 10 minutes straight and the videos aren't structured necessarily and there arent many cut-ins or jumps or fancy editing, but i can just keep watching and ur opinions are always so agreeable. Tho i feel like ur talking from the heart, what u say is well thought-out. Been a fan since we were both 14 and awkward and I'm glad ur content is still amazing.
great video. I like your outlook on the platform, you pretty much touched on all the issues I have with it while also mentioning all the things I like about it too
"the richer and more attractive you get, the less funny you are" Gee we sure are lucky that Nathan is ugly and broke Lmao but fr that's terrifyingly accurate
Straight white cis tiktok is the problem, everyone else is hilarious. I love my fyp now and while I spent hours on vine the way its treated (like my friends would have quoting vines drinking games) made me sour on it but when there is creativity and something to say tik tok is pretty decent
