Bruh same. I was trying to push myself to graduate college a semester early but I couldn’t handle 20 credit hours so I’m still in school until May, and I’ve been feeling like a failure since then. But like...that shit really spoke to me so I’m gonna try to slow down from now on
This reminds me of when I was the age Nathan is now, I was in such a rush to 'start my life' that I didn't think I had any time left to do further education. 5 years later, I realised that even though I was in such a rush, I hadn't actually accomplished anything. So I signed myself up to another 6 years of education so I can pursue my dreams, slowly. I'm so happy I did. Life doesn't end at 25! Or 30! Or 40!!! There's plenty of time! Enjoy your life and enjoy the moment, do what your heart tells you because it will always lead you in the right direction.
A cat with bread on its head I feel that. When i was 15 I had so much anxiety about my future and i felt like if I didn’t go to uni straight after school my life would fall apart. I’m 21 now and still working not in University and I’m so grateful circumstances stopped me from doing my course because 6 years later I have very different career paths in mind. Not everything happens for a reason, but we can find good reasons in everything. 🙏🏽🙏🏽
It legit baffles me you never had reached 1 mil before, you are an ancient legend in the yt game yet you just reached 500k. You deserve all the love you get Nathan. Thanks for helping me so many times and making us all laugh.
agreed man, but honestly to me (a fan) i wouldn't like him any more or any less if he were at 1mil subscribers or where he is now. i think that's part of the message he was getting at. his vids are still great to me and the sub count won't necessarily make them any better or worse
This is literally Beyoncé's same state of thinking. She literally doesn't care about charts and awards. Just the impact her projects have and it really shows.
@@takemyhand1988 this is how when rappers have beef, if the smaller rapper has no chart success but is artistic and makes classic worthy album but wins, the bigger rapper who gets no1 thinks he/she won cause hes still getting no 1s
I relate to that comment and video on a whole new level. Man, people used to warn me about Junior year in High School. I didn't listen, I thought it was another stupid myth about High School. The struggle is real fellow junior. The struggle is real.
i'm a senior in college and had the same mentality in high school. college is awesome although i wish i had tried to enjoy the time i had in high school more.
"would you rather have a song that's number one and then never talked about again or a song that never hits number one ever but is listen to for like 50 years" I thought about somebody that I use to know
ah see, but even somebody i used to know impacted some people. well. it impacted me. i'm a gotye fan for life now. i really appreciate everything that man does as a musician and person. he's one of those rare people that not only knows what he loves and is good at it, but does a lot to give back to this community (of electronic music) that has given him so much, going so far as to find, purchase, and restore a rare french instrument that was invented back in the 40's (an ondioline) and performing a concert with them- music that hadn't been performed live on those instruments in decades. even if he's only ever known for that one pop hit, i think he's okay with that. the work he does outside of solo work shows that he's not very concerned with fame or momentum. he tours as a drummer in a band called the basics, that do very well in austrailia, and he works on side projects out of the limelight, and i think he's genuinely happy with that
nathan is like that artist you love that isn't so well known but you really wish they were big cause they're so talented and they deserve it, but at the same time you dont want them to get too big and well known cause ur selfish and feel like it would kinda ruin things but seriously how does this man not even have 1M he's literally the best content creator in my eyes
that is so wild tho....... .....the fact that a song can take you back to a specific time in your life and u can remember like how u were feeling and what was happening at that time
I like when you give advice - you give good advice, your “the future is freakin terrifying” video helped me get through high school and is still helping me through college
It's so important to define success as something that isn't defined by external validation & actually makes you happy or you'll never ever reach said success! I'm so glad to have figured this out in my 20s, I think I'll be a much happier person for it.
the ad i got for this vid was for a norwegian college and said: "life isn't always abt winning, sometimes it's abt learning" damn big brother watchin me watchin u
"That song is gonna be a soundtrack in a moment of Their life" Yessss..you know when you hear a really great song and that helps you get through a certain period of time in your life and then when you listen to the song again years later the songs hits differently and nostalgia hits you.Mann....I subscribed.
“I am preaching to me right now” me every time I give advice 😂 Seriously though, you’re right. And it really is telling that people that successful still feel that way; human brains are full of self doubt the best we can do is keep checking ourselves on it.
A letter I wrote at 2am to Nathan Zed: I've been a fan of your videos ever since 2014 and I really admire your personality and the way you present your thoughts and opinions on delicate topics. But more specifically, I wanted to say that your video 'its okay if you're not number 1" has really impacted me. You see, I post art and I got caught in this loop of worrying over empty numbers. How many likes, how many followers, how many comments. But your video has truly taught me to think instead of how I can create an impact on just one person with my art. I just wanted you to know that your video has impacted me that way and has very much changed how I see social media and my own worth through it, and I actually find myself rewatching it usually once a week when I need some extra inspiration 💛🌟 I have no idea if you will actually see this, but I just wanted you to know I wont ever forget the positive impact you and your content have on me 💖
Dude, your videos are so refreshing to find on my RU-vid feed. You’re always giving real advice without sounding pretentious/condescending. Your videos are definitely making an impact on whoever is lucky enough to find them. 💙💙💙
DJ Khaled took it personally, but didn't realise Tyler has a cult following... Nicki Minaj took it personally but didn't realise Travis Scott has a cult following and owns a theme park.
Funny you mention Macklemore, he's actually a really good example of not getting super caught up on being number one. He's talked about how his follow up album to his Grammy win didn't perform that well, and how he's kind of come to terms with not really being a big, ultra successful superstar anymore, and is just making what he feels like making.
Good luck from what I hear being a musician is hard just remember that you’re one of the few willing to take those steps to put your work out there, that’s an achievement in of itself. Good luck!
kevin abstract from brockhampton said something like “we say we want to be the biggest boyband in the world, but the stuff we make wont always get us there, and that’s okay” and that reaaaally changed me
"If you're not promoting your own thing, you'll end up promoting someone else's."(or smtht along those lines) KABOOM! That's Genius! Thx for sharing that.
This is why Jcole is a legend.. he has never cared about numbers.. his focused on his art and u can feel the passion..these other artists making tick tock songs just to be number one and the song is trash ...nah
“At the end of the day you’re supposed to connect with it more than anyone else.” Literally said “that’s true” out loud. You right, thanks for reminding us
But lowkey I get it why Nicki got “mad” at Travis, homeboy was using his daughter and Kylie as a “bait” or whatever so he got more streams or whatever tf he got.
Your comedic timing and editing are phenomenal Mr. Zed sir. Also very good message, good to hear from you again, keep doing what you're doing! Peace be with you!
Your videos are well written/composed. Timely and timeless, for real. You take a current topic and really see the implications and meaning beyond the immediate context and make it a discussion on life. Very smart.
I'm literally thinking about the video you made about not being successful by 25 all the time I stg, it's the first video I watched of yours and it stayed with me. Your videos are the definition of impactful
i just wanna say nathan that you 100% made a impact on my life. ive been watching you since i was in 7th grade, now im about to graduate high school and i can say for sure that you definitely shaped parts of my life with your humor, wisdom and positivity.
I wish I could like a video multiple times, man. As perfectionist who loves to write stories, I'm constantly comparing myself to others and doubting what I'm making. I've tried to keep the "If one person is helped by it, all your work is worth it" mentality, but it's hard to always remember that and it can still get discouraging. But the way you were able to articulate everything and even just knowing that there's other people dealing with the same thing is a HUGE help and encouragement. All of this advice is gold and I will absolutely be coming back when I'm feeling down
I legit didn't know who Roddy Rich was until they started campaigning to beat him, now I have half his new album and some older stuff all over my spotify playlists
I just realised I've been subscribed to your channel for 6 years now. It seems crazy to me that you don't have millions of subscribers, but I think you'll find you've had a bigger impact on the ones you do have than most RU-vid's out there! I always leave your videos feeling better about myself. It's weird to admit I've gotten much more valuable life advice from a guy a year younger than myself on the internet, than I ever got in school or university. I can't thank you enough for that! Success can't be measured in numbers. Just keep doing what you're doing, because I can guarantee it's making a difference to so many people like myself.
Nathan, I've been watching your content since middle school (I'm in college now) and I really appreciate your work. It's been absolutely incredible to watch you glow. Also your eyes are gorgeous. Best wishes and happy Sunday
As someone who has been working for over a year on a passion project for RU-vid, watching this re-enforces how I always felt and should feel about it. This is helpful and always good to hear, so thank you so much for that! Another bit of advice I got a long time ago from a writer that I really like and stuck with me: _"Make what you like. If you like it, chances are others will too. If you're the only one, well then at least you met demand."_
I finally realized. The way you talk kinda remind of that one guy from the commercial that use to yell at me as kid about getting off my ass and going to college! Lmaooo
i’ve been following you since vine back when i was in middle school and highschool and i can tell you right now that you’ve definitely made the impact you were hoping for. i really needed to hear all of this today, so thank you once again for uplifting and inspiring me! i know im not alone in feeling that way 💖
I can spend a lot of time on youtube just watching whatever comes up on my feed to pass the time, but I always seek out Nathan's videos and coming back to them because they all have a big impact on me. Keep doing what you're doing.
Bro I jus wanna say that I actually did watch you on the way to school I still do😂 and no joke some of your videos really helped me through some tough times and even made me laugh so for what it’s worth your videos definitely impacted me and I’ll never forget being 14 and rewatching your videos idek how many times and laughing my ass off so thank you :)
I love ur content so much cause you’re so wholesome and speak to so many awesome mental/emotional wellness concepts (if that makes sense lmao) but are also funny like a ted talk plus kurtis Connor god bless
This video really is timeless. I feel like everyone should really SOAK in this message. I know I'll definitely be coming back to this one multiple times! You deserve that 1 million & more than anything ❤
Just so u know I listened to your videos on my way to school and it hella inspired me to do my best today. You talk about wanting success but in my eyes bro you already made it. You inspire mad people every day including me and your videos probably changed my life.
Back in 2013 when I was 11 I stumbled on a the third pew video and you immediately became one of my favorite youtubers. that ice cream drumstick metaphor is one that truthfully has kept me going throughout the years. In a week I turn 18 and in a few months I graduate and seeing your videos consistently these past few weeks have really been much needed motivation to keep going so thank you so much for these and any videos to come!!
YES to all of this. It's so easy on RU-vid to think you know which videos are the most successful based on which have the highest viewcount or the most likes, but views and likes are not the same as impact. And it really puts it into perspective realizing that even artists and celebrities who have reached the top can still get caught up in the numbers too. Love your content, Nathan! I think I might have to go rewatch Sky High now...
I clicked on this video to see Bieber getting clowned but I ended up getting valuable advice out of it instead, we have to stan 😔💕 I'm glad you are making vids consistently again
You were like the first/only vlog channel I sub'd to waaay back in the day and I just realized I don't think I've ever commented on any of your videos. Criminal, I gotta show my appreciation. You've always been very wise and given solid advice, but it's clear you've also made the most of college cause dude, you're on some other level. I love that you spent this video talking about focusing on what's next, because it's exactly why every new thing you put out is so quality. You can see thought and care and love behind it and it makes a huge difference. Stoked you've been making more stuff recently!
my favorite album of all time is Discovery from Daft Punk... and I just recently found out, that probably 70% of the album is influenced by black artists... damn... black artists are maybe a minority but they really impact the whole music industry
I can confidently say you’ve had a positive impact on my life and I think that’s one of the coolest things about RU-vid: allowing people who would otherwise never meet a chance to connect. 💛
To what you said about watching your videos on the bus in middle or high school..I remember I started watching your videos at the end of high school and seeing the one where you spoke about how life is like one of those ice cream cones with the chocolate and nuts on top--and how high school is the very thin layer of nuts (or something you don't like) on top. But the rest is chocolate and ice cream and beautiful (good things). I really liked that. To this day, anytime I go to the dollar store, sometimes I get ice cream..I choose that cone and I'm reminded of of your inspirational words and it makes me stop and appreciate this crazy, sweet thing called life. Thank you
I found this channel from looking for reviews of the Last of Us 2. I loved your video about that and I love this one way more. Some beautiful advice here. It's a constant struggle to remove ego from the act of creation, and you really seem like you get it. Subbed.
Yo, thanks for being real and going off on how life ain’t about the numbers, it’s about finding meaning in what you do. Causes numbers always be changing, but you make something that you’re truly proud of, it’ll always bring you joy
