I think the politician did not frame his question correctly - i think what he really meant to ask if TikTok can use WiFi data in the background without the user knowing
Just like when you Google something and every app, from Facebook, Instagram, RU-vid, all start showing ads about that like they all know what you searched for? Sometimes even when you just spoke something didn't even googled It? Don't use tiktok but it's just like they are trying to blame tt for what every app does and they aprove.
You are right. He didn’t phrase it correctly but his question was a good one. This is a problem with IOT devices as well as they sometimes scan your local WiFi network which is why it’s recommended to put those devices on their own VLAN
@@aznmochibunny It's the amount and specifics of the data that's the problem. If an app uses my data to track how much I'm on that app and related functions, that's to be expected. If like Instagram it can track data on other units connected to the same network, that's a bit of a problem. Also I think most people are completely ignorant of how much your service provider as well as some apps can see and track.
I completely agree and it’s not a joke like she’s betraying it to be. There are children on TikTok and I guess if parents don’t want to keep them safe what kind of parents are they? I get it people like the app but don’t be ignorant about it.
@@foofur6647 If you’re referring to the TikTok executive, 1) English appears not to be his first language and, 2) the question is so bizarrely ignorant I’m guessing he’s trying to parse out exactly what the question is seeking.
They really should be asking how TT stores and processes data and how they would handle it were a certain government entity to request data from it. Asking how the internet works just makes videos like this completely accurate, lol
@@IngaHicks not about the government. But there are famous videos about their hearings as well. Probably most famous is Google's Sundar Pichai: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t-lMIGV-dUI.html
The Wi-Fi is an access point for all information on that network or connected to that network. My husband is a sys admin and has our home locked down so tight that periodically I yell at him to white list a website I need.
Poor man, his gut instinct was probably to laugh in dum dums face, but he pulled himself together and made sure that what he'd heard was actually what had been said. You can not argue with stupid. Jeenies examples of density are spot on😂
What he asked could've been a valid question "does tiktok access the entire wifi network?" This would mean does it look at what else is connected to your wifi can it access those devices aswell etc etc
Exactly. It was poorly worded, but a legitimate question. Everyone in the comment section (plus Jeenie) who thought this question was dumb does not know how technology (especially apps) works. Boy we are doomed as a species!!!!
Whether he meant something else or not, the phrasing he used to ask that question sounded dumb. I’ve worked in technology for years and the way he worded that question was dumb. He obviously doesn’t understand technology that well either, or his questions would have been worded better. This just proves that people who don’t understand how apps work, shouldn’t be examining someone else. No hate just a different viewpoint.
All laughter aside tons of individuals information was kept in tic toc files about Indian users. Technology can be more powerful than most people think.
Its actually a logical question that wasn't worded right. What hes asking is how much permission is required by tiktok and does it gather and hold the network information. With the network information, you can access all websites you have browsed, if you have credit cards saved and passwords, they would have access to that as well.
I agree, but you can't have someone with such little knowledge of how it works that they mess up such an important question at a hearing, then you need to hire someone with better understanding of the case
@@HyattHyatt3179 These people were elected… they have a broad set of general knowledge (hopefully) but few tech specialists go into politics, so asking them to know this specific in-depth set of knowledge is a high ask. They do have aids and feedback from the public, but they’re not experts.
Right. You got it right. Just the framing of question was wrong. Everyone knows about dark things happening with Tik Tok users as well as non users. On the other hand we have this not so smart RU-vidr who would just take advantage of what is seen and make some extra cash by making this a big scene and nonsensical content 😂😂.
I am so glad to see this comment. It's always good to be aware of things coming from china. But they do need to word it better to avoid being seen like an idiot.
His question was worded quite poorly. I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and say he is asking if TikTok could access other devices through a wifi network..... Which the answer is yes. Viruses that are put on the original device can spread to others on your wifi. I don't understand why they didn't call some IT guys to ask the questions or at least run there questions through an IT person...
What he is getting at is the app reporting details about home networks and other devices accessing the network back to HQ. That information could then be used to exploit vulnerabilities in those devices and potentially those users depending on other indicators the app is collecting. It's also possible to exploit wifi to see through walls -- really that's open source information.
I think you are giving him to much credit. While that is a valid question he didn't phrase his question in a way that implies he understands any of that
@@fireflower44 also, this is true of literally any app or website. are they just going to ban the whole internet??? it doesn't really make sense to ask in a hearing like this.
@@eliontheinternet3298probably one of the main factors for Congress is that bytedance is a chinese company that have to abide by CCP laws and there have already been instances where some of their employees used the app to spy on a few US-based journalists. That said, to be fair they should regulate all social media if they're going to regulate or ban one.
To be fair it's the gateway to get access to your personal accounts, so many people using public WiFi got their datas breached and liable for loans they didn't take. Here is a deeper issue regarding third party most likely the CCP gaining access to all your accounts including facial recognition. A Chinese Singaporean lady revealed this on Joe Rogan podcast.
Very nicely put. It's a serious matter, yet there are a lot of people here laughing at that guy for not properly expressing himself instead of being concerned.
And the CCP gaining access to your accounts to do what exactly? International heist? To design the worlds largest pie chart to see how many people prefer Korean bbq mukbang videos over cats pushing things off tables videos? Wow, such a security threat right there. 😂
Ya'll realize that this is a very legitimate question from the US rep. It might sound absurd but Tiktok is China-owned and unlike North America, they have a strong hold on their citizens and companies. So whatever Tiktok has access to, the Chinese government can also easily have access to. The man might not have the tech knowledge to know how to ask the question but he's asking it on behalf of his constituents who have legitimate concerns.
@@anasian8894 I know you've been brainwashed by your government but there is plenty of proof regarding the ways that the Chinese government has overstepped their bounds.
Then maybe they should get people who know what they're talking about instead of halfwits to ask proper questions instead of this ridiculous gibberish. But that would mean admitting that they don't know everything.
@@HeatherSealey They don’t know everything. They have to know about a lot of things that pertain to their constituents, but they’re on the right track I guess. It’s like asking your dad to know in depth tech info AND everything else.
Well, I guess that no one have understand the real question. Actually some Apps can take control in a much deeper instances. Gaining access of data that's are away from the Tiktok policies by example. And, YES! some of your questions Jeenie, can really be true to do.
As ridiculous as the question sounds, it is a basis of tiktoks testimony that in fact, Tik-Tok can use a Holmes wi-fi system. Therefore if it is using that Holmes wi-fi system it can access any information utilized on that Wi-Fi net. The senator is not stupid, he is laying groundwork.
Tiktok needs to be banned for multiple reasons. But that hearing was not exactly the best way to get the message through. Anyways, this was hilarious as usual.
It is only supression of freedom when woke people advocating against things they dont like or just not giving their money for it. Canceling: bad Boycotting or banning: good
This is the funniest thing Jeenie has ever made… -a college student who is currently laughing hysterically on campus with everyone around her thinking she’s lost it… she has.
I agree 👍 I'm fed tf up with having to have a Facebook to ordinary things in life and if I don't I don't get to participate! Fakebook is not healthy for me in my life and I would say it also affects a lot of others negatively to. If your my friend you know it! I don't need umpteen hundred fake friends or nosy people who couldn't care less.
because the former is a foreign business, not beholden to American laws so executives will not face punishment for harming Americans, and the country it is native to is communist meaning the government ultimately owns the business thus, if they are mining data from American consumers..and and that data is going to the Chinese gov..well that is literally spying.
It's like trying to explain wifi to your grandma -you don't want to be rude but sometimes she's gonna ask a really stupid question and you have to just deal with that.
I understand there are legitimate concerns about TikTok, but that was such a dumb question from someone who clearly doesn’t know much about tech, and a brilliantly hilarious response from Jeenie 🤣🤣🤣
@@Bookworm51485 I agree with you, I just didn't articulate myself well enough, obviously. Which yes, I can acknowledge the irony there! Pride goeth before a fall and all that!
What he meant was is the app accessing WiFi not just for app usage but to track activity through the ip address beyond the app. Yes given the question is vague but what can you expect from a congressman.....
basis of tiktoks testimony that in fact, Tik-Tok can use a Holmes wi-fi system. Therefore if it is using that Holmes wi-fi system it can access any information utilized on that Wi-Fi net. The senator is not stupid, he is laying groundwork.
So can literally every single other platform. If that was the actual concern, then why aren't they worried about Facebook, Google, etc (who also have even more private data collection)?
I think the person was asking whether TikTok monitored what a user do whilst they are not using TikTok (which a lot of app do), and whether that monitoring extended to the entire wifi network. Which it most likely/hopefully does not.
you are soooo funny Jeenie!!!! What a dmb question! hahaha the CEO cant even understand. "If i turn on my android phone using the WIFI, can I access the refrigerator."
It does. It's the same way hackers do it if they get into your device they can go for your Wi-Fi and access all your other devices. That is what the speaker is poorly trying to ask.
@@punkrockmetalqueen92 yes exactly my point lol Im over her mind blown at all the people in the comments who are so dumb and aren’t understanding the core of what he’s getting at is our world really this dumb because majority of these comments seem to legitimately think alike just like the creator of this video how stupid are they all
@@kukuku36 but if this is a problem with hacking, then what does tiktok have to do with it? any app/device can be hacked like facebook, home security ( like audio visual security cameras)...etc. that's a hacker's fault not the app. so i don't understand why are they asking this. they should've focused solely on tiktok's relationship with china because that'z what actually matters.
0:32 This part just reminded me of when my Asian mom (Filipina) said "i DoN'T wAnT a BLuE tEeTh" every time my family and I would tell her to turn on her bluetooth 😂😂😂😂
GURL! This just tickled me sooooo much!😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆 Thank you for this, Jeenie! Every time Congress decides to question tech companies, they always fail to do any research so they'll know what kind of questions to ask. I guess they don't mind looking foolish! 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪
This was hilarious!😂 I didn't see the whole clip, but maybe they eventually ask something relevant along the lines of data breaches or something? (Because that's what Tiktok is banned in India for.)
I think he honestly intended for the question to be more like, can it use a person's shared WiFi network to access their personal files, or something like that. But the question was horrifically vague, as is the bill. Some savvy republicans have tried to stop the ban as its phrased now, because it would ban other technologies in the US too. It's just another example of legislators not having a clue about what they're banning or allowing. If they'd have the balls to stop letting evangelical retirees run the show they'd be able to fill the ranks with educated consultants and people that actually, oh ,idk, represent the people. But hey, that's a foreigners take on the whole circus.
What was asked to Mr. Chew was a valid question. If only people would have spent less time on tik-tok, they would have understood it better. Access to a network can lead to getting sensitive information about internet users. This can amount to breach of privacy and many more serious internet crimes.
The word TikTok doesn’t appear anywhere in this bill. TikTok is just a cover. What it actually does is give the secretary of commerce the ability to name any country a foreign adversary or regime and ban any software or devices from that country that access American wifi or process data in anyway. Using a VPN to get around it would be illegal with up to 20 years in prison or a fine of up to a million dollars.

So many scenarios to “If I….” You out-beat me Jeenie! A few years ago, I kept insisting on using “Common Sense” once a day to keep the mind fit. But your “If I” had my mind running in circles looking for answers 😂🤣😂. Roaming…Please Wait….ok, I was saying….(power off)…ahh..(safe mode)…ufff…I’m back. I’m ok now. 🤣😂🤣 loved the video. 😇
Well... they have to ask these stupid question in a hearing to have evidence when someone says "yes" or "no" and it later turns out to be a lie. Btw does anyone have a wifi printer? How do you think you can print the stuff you send via your phone/tablet/pc?
Well…. Only reason they’d have to be upset is that once TikTok has access to the phones Wi-Fi, if they get hacked or hire people to do digging the IP address and the wi-fi is the gate to go through for that. Unless a user disabled Wi-Fi use for the app and only used cellular data, TikTok would only have access to the information on the phone that whatever firewall/antivirus program is installed can most likely block.
Uhmm... No app or device have access to the Wi-Fi, what are you on about... It's a connection that keeps up the internet... There's nothing to access lmao
@@PersonTP There *is* something to access, but unless you're trying to hide something then there's nothing to worry about. A decent hacker can steal a lot of information by accessing your Wi-Fi network. But if you've got things to hide, then you likely have more protections in place, whether there technical like firewalls or just regulations within the building. I had a friend who was a programmer working for a medical company and they weren't allowed to connect any personal devices to the work wi-fi, or to connect their work laptops to their home wifi, in case competition tried to get information. I can understand them wanting to keep it off of government devices, but at the same time, government devices shouldn't have anything other than work stuff on it anyway. There are thousands of apps that steal and store data. Targeting this one specific one isn't going to change anything. I wish they had to let the public vote on *every* law instead of being able to pass what they want, because it's so obvious they have no idea what they're doing.
They also noted that it picks up on key flicks and my auto response to that was: 'so does google, you gonna ban that too?' Basically everything they're 'concerned about' is something an another app or site does as well. What are they going to do next? Ban the internet?
That's one of the reasons a few of the more savvy republicans have tried to stop the ban. On the grounds it would also call for a ban of... essentially most mobile technologies in the US. It's way too vague and definitely written by people who aren't tech experts. He might have actually meant can the app access sensitive information on the users private network (and subsequently access more than the shared files) through the WiFi connection. But thats a long and complicated question, that, even I don't know if I phrased correctly for what I mean, so the republican is all HURR DURR does it connect to WiFi? Like, the implications of that question eventually lead to the app hacking into personal computers through a shared WiFi network. But he sure as hell didn't actually ask that.
Tic toc could be a legitimate threat to security since its owners are Chinese and the government has too much control over their businesses. They need to make a US entity of tic toc and not allow stored databases.
They only want it banned is because the younger generations are picking up the truths & it’s gaining traction & they’re doing everything that can be done to prevent that from happening. 18 years of indoctrination can be ended with a single video.
I think the reason they want it specifically for TickTock is that most american companies, like google and meta have agreements with the US government and share their info with them, the problem here is that the US government doesn't want TickTock to share the info they gather to the Chinese government
If true, then that's exactly why pushing the bill through as is will have a severe ripple effect. It wouldn't matter *which* government hijacks the data without the users will (consent is probably baked into the ToS which, frankly, barely anyone reads), the app should be banned. It's like the bible being included in the banned book list. As, it's a completely valid book to ban. So, if TikTok gets banned, other apps i.e Instagram would have to be banned too. [I can't say for certain which government has access to what. International legislations being incompatible at best. For as many accusations of CCP data mining, there's an 'expert' saying it's not the case. (Same can be said for the USA, they might claim your data is safe in US servers and special subpoenas are needed, but, frankly, depends on corruption etc)]
This is PERFECT!!! You roasted him!! Lol. They all just sounded soooo stupid, they should be extremely embarassed!!! Wish we could just fire them!!! Lol
Wow Jeenie you killed it!!! Wtg! You can't fix stupid. I see people making excuses for that man in the comments but seriously can't we get someone qualified to ask questions??? Otherwise what's the point?? We already looking pretty foolish.
What he means is if I use TikTok and am connected to a WIFI, will TikTok collect Data from the home WIFI and collect information from all the other devices that are connected to the WIFI it without anyone knowing. It probably should have been communicated better but I do think he tried to play a little dumb...
I don’t know how the technology works. But, I do know that when I do an internet search for a particular item, I soon get ads for that same product on YT, Instagram, and Facebook.
