As a geologist, I always recommend marble-pattern porcelain tiles instead of real marble, which is soft, porous, and chemically reactive. It can’t be cleaned aggressively and shows every scratch, etch and stain. High-quality porcelain “marble” tiles are nearly indistinguishable from natural marble nowadays, so the look is just as good, but they are so much more durable and stay good-looking for decades.

Also porcelaine is only man-made in France and must be super expensive to import, whereas marble is a nature-made stone.

@@1Channel1 Porcelain tile is also made in America. It costs slightly more than ceramic, is very strong, and comes in non slip finishes desirable for floors and showers. However, I'll be looking at Lili cement tiles after this video.

Agreed - as a long time tile & stone supplier, there is no comparison in the ease on care and durability of porcelain vs real stone. Porcelain originally was developed mostly for commercial applications where they excel, but in the last 30+ years they have become a mainstay in the residential market. Italy has always been the leader in design trends and quality for porcelain tile, and the nice thing is that you can get awesome materials in the $5 - $8 range per sq ft, which is less than the typical labor to install it depending on your area. Use stone in areas where it won't hurt you, like fireplace facings, backsplashes, etc - but leave the high use areas to porcelain, and the stone and wood looks look phenomenal

So this episode, if I’m honest, I was all-dolled-up because I broke into the champagne 🍾. Lisa, can we get a quick class on durability? I have 3 LARGE dogs and I cannot tell you how disappointed I am in our wood floor's appearance after 5 years.

I put solid hardwood in my home years ago when we moved in and they were pretty busted up after a year or two. I had a bullmastiff. Then after adding kids and a lab, forget it. We are currently building and I decided on engineered HW this time around. My kids are older and i no longer have my dogs. HW in general is just not good for large dogs. I did some research and luxury vinyl planking is probably the way the go for you. I ended up with this for my mudroom and basement ( family rm, gym). It literally looks almost identical to my HW but is way more durable. They also have porcelain “wood” planks but honestly the vinyl looked better imo.

We've used laminate on our floors, it was our only option because we live in a 1967 MCM with a concrete slab foundation and copper tube radiant heat embedded in the slab. Laminate is the only product durable and stable enough to work with that type of heating system. Laminates have improved hugely in the last 20 years. Modern products are really quite beautiful and very cost effective compared to hardwood, which has exploded in price. Laminate is also durable and maintenance free. So it may be something to consider. The only small bit of advice I have is to use the highest quality underlayment to avoid a hollow clacking sound when walking on it. Laminate flooring is like carpet, the quality of the underlayment is as important as the quality of a carpet pad.

Really important factor in tile selection not mentioned is exposure: Will tiles be exposed to pressure, damaging forces or weights, caustic substances, water/moisture, etc.

TGIF!! can't wait to see this one! We (already) installed several new TILE finishes this year... 2 bathroom walls surrounding the tub with heated porcelain mosaic on the floor - and charcoal 12"x24" stacked porcelain for the floor in the kitchen, entrance and hall, also heated (Ditra-Heat) for our Canadian winters :). Great video! When I think of tile over history, the most spectacular examples that come to mind are the exquisite geometric mosaics you see in those incredible grand mosques, all over the walls, arching up into the ceilings... just beautiful!

Hi Lisa. Thank you so much for the awesome tile lesson. I so appreciate all of your professional expertise and love your enthusiasm. I loved your comment on 'badgering your tile installer' to have tiny grout lines installed. Perhaps in a future series you might share your tips and experience in dealing with 'the trades'. The average homeowner simply does not know how to deal with painters, tilers, wallpaper installers, finish carpenters, flooring installers etc. I'm not saying 'the trades' will take advantage of inexperienced homeowners but if you don't know the right questions to ask or have some knowledge on how to get what you want or what to look out for, "the trades" may take advantage. Of course, that is why designers should be involved!! Love your channel and congratulations on over 200,000 subscribers!

Help, Lisa!! We tiled our walk-in bathroom with small marble tiles, white/gray… I do love it but big mistake on shower floor. We live in Northern California, lots of red volcanic dirt EVERYWHERE on our property. Husband workaholic, is out in dirt constantly, plus busy active young grandsons. Dirt is tracked in and especially shower time has resulted in brown, very dirty stains embedded in light gray grout. We’ve tried everything. Scrubbing, cleaning products, sanding, grinding, sealing..nothing seals out that dirt! How would redo of shower floor with a solid gray cement? Love your channel! ………❤️Jayne

Porcelain is so easy to cut with tile cutter Juz sayin’ if you want an easy success go porcelain / not saying tile is easy it looks easy but keep a level close for depth // too much cement or can make some tiles stick out further than you might want/ bigger tiles harder to butter and hold you need a strong man just to hold them while you butter and tip over to set in the spot. I thought no sweat I can do this ah… mosaic is easier small tiles easier but harder to cut go figure/ 💡👏🏻👀😵‍💫🥵🤫💸. Oooh lili dragonfly hm. Fireplace needs to be retiled to leave the 80’s. Thoughts?..

The thing i hate bout porcelain is it absorbs any harsh chemical like bleach which is perfect for cleaning grout. I hate dirty grout and this discoloured porcelain from cleaning the grout. Any tips?

I think she missed saying the Portuguese make and use the most amazing blue/white tiles, and I believe the Dutch got the idea from Portugal all those centuries ago because they loved the style and bought consinements of them. But in Europe started with a Spanish king who admired the arab designs and skills of tile making and expanded the craft into the Iberian peninsula. Portugal was part of Spain, also part of Spain's territories (Low Lands) were in Belgium, Luxemburg and other parts on northern Germany, as well as Holland.

So many beautiful options now. We did our kitchen 10 years ago and we went with a vertical mosaic backsplash. I would love to change it but I love my countertops and not sure if they can save it. Oh well such is life. Thanks Lisa.

I can vouch for Lili Tile. We purchased a home that had just been built. Tile was already in. However, the tile in the mudroom and powder room were not sealed and are very dirty. After many many weeks of research, it was determined I had a cement product by Lili Tile. I reached out to them and they helped me find a solution to clean the tile and seal it. Their customer service team was extremely helpful.

WOWSERS!!!! Another amazing informative video. I am an interior designer working in the flooring plus more industry so I deal with tile all the time. Our company reps a few different cement tile lines but oh my gosh....LILI is amazing! Your explanation on grout color is spot on with what I tell my customers. The one struggle we have is the types of grouts not just color that are appropriate for their projects...i.e. traditional sanded grout vs. epoxy grout. The epoxy is more expensive and so many of our installers don't like to use it. I get that it's more time consuming, hence we do pay them more. I'd love to hear your take on this. Keep up the good work...I'm such a fan! Oh and I love love your glasses! :)

I had a very quick look at tiles yesterday when I went to buy a new kitchen tap, I am loving the hexagon shapes 😍😍😍😍😍. I personally like extra large tiles for the floors, lesson grout lines to keep clean 😉

When discussing the floor you often use the word “field”. What does Field mean? Is it Heavy traffic areas or common paths?

Great presentation! Great examples. Loved the fish-scale inset and also the dark bathrooms. We used 12x24" porcelain tiles vertically on our fireplace wall with a curved stainless mantle. Our kitchen has two walls of deep blue porcelain tiles with charcoal grout. Our stairs have glass tiles on the risers. I love tile so much!

Thanks for the informative video, Lisa! For anyone contemplating kitchen flooring, I would just think very carefully about stone or hard tile, at least if the kitchen really will be used for daily cooking. Those stone-hard surfaces, which have no give at all, can be surprisingly hard on the feet and knees after you've been standing for a while.

This is so helpful. I live in a 100 year old house with original oak wood floors, except there is a newer extension at the back that I'm about to lay floor tile in. My decor style is eclectic; a bit of contemporary, mid-century, traditional and boho, unified together under one color scheme. Do you think it would be a design sin to lay concrete look-a-like large porcelain field tiles on the floor of a century old house?

In my country all shopping malls started fitting their floors with shiny tiles some years ago. Everyone worried that they would slip. I had a shop in one such mall for 10 years and no one ever slipped, even though they were constantly being washed. I am seriously considering replacing my floor tiles with shiny tiles as a result. They look so luxurious. Also, I personally won't go with very large floor tiles. Same shop, quite a few good quality large tiles developed fine cracks. The purpose of grout between tiles is to cater for expansion and contraction. With very large tiles, you lose out on that.

I have leather-finished serpentinite kitchen countertops, I love them. I saved half price on this luxury rock by buying the end-of-the pallet slabs, which had this finish, and are beautiful, with lots of gorgeous metamorphic texture and color variation. I was planning to get honed, but I like this better, it’s split, then polished, but not ground smooth. It reflects more light than the honed, which is good because it’s a dark gray/green color. Dirt is practically invisible on this rock. The only drawback to the leather finish is that rolled pastry or dough has a slightly textured underside, but it doesn’t bother me, that side is put down in the pie pan or cookie sheet, anyway.

Love your channel, Lisa. Overall, I think you've done a nice job of providing an overview of tile. HOWEVER, asking an installer to violate both manufacturer and TCNA installation recommendations is only setting someone up for a tile failure... and that can be both ugly and costly down the road. (Responding to your grout line size comment.)

Ah, we already chose the tiles for our new bathroom, toilet and kitchen.x) Though I don't know if we'd made anything different after watching this, since the budget was tight. And I deffinitely recognize the costs of installation for different tiles! We had a few options that we discussed with the contractor, and the installation costs can differ several hundreds of euros for kind of basic tiles, depending how they need to be laid and what kind of material they are (depends whether cutting will be difficult). I didn't know any of this before, but life is about learning.;)

you manage to pack all the exciting things about subcategories in 15 min. one might think, that is just a 'sexy' but superficial video about somethings, only experts know everything about - BUT - it is so full packed with info in all the half sentences and short hints - one does feel like, to get the hang of it and develope a sort of an 'eye' for all the important stuff when it comes to tiles
