In this video we talk about a few things to keep in mind when tiling around electrical outlets and switches. Make sure to raise the surface of the wall where the mounting strap on the outlet will rest and also cut areas out where screws will mount the outlet into the electrical box.

Everytime the screwdriver kept slipping on the switch, after it was obviously still powered up, I braced for sparks...ngl ... lol I am not an electrician but would like to learn just the basics, so am watching as many videos as possible and asking for advice on certain things. When I was a child, I saw the adhesive (from some sort of renovation my father was doing on a kitchen wall) go up in flames from a spark from live wires crossing.

I shot this so many years ago, but I feel like that switch went to a garbage disposal and it was disconnected at the time of the renovation. That being said, I've worked on plenty of live switches and outlets over the years and depending on the extent of the work, I may or may not switch the breaker off. If I am re-wiring something, I definitely terminate the power. The childhood memory sounds pretty scary, but I don't know of any flammable adhesives that would catch fire from a spark. Circuit breakers, electrical boxes and sound wiring techniques go a long way to help avoiding things from getting too out of hand and I'm not certain I've ever met an electrician who hasn't gotten a shock. That being said, it is probably good that the general public has a healthy respect for electricity but doing a little research and experience helps.

Informative video, thank you. However, I think you left too much tile around the box/receptacle, making it a possible challenge to replace the wiring or box, if something goes wrong in the future. I prefer to leave just enough tile for the cover plate to cover, maybe with a minimum of 1/8" undercut all the way around (for a standard cover plate). It takes a bit more precision measuring and cutting to achieve this, but IMO, it's worth it.

If you are pulling out and replacing the job box or wiring, an 1/8" margin around the box isn't going to allow you to take that box out or re-run wire any easier than if the tile goes up to the edge of the box. Any work like that is going to result in a bit of wall repair and new tiling. That being said, if people feel more comfortable leaving an 1/8" margin around the receptacle box, who am I to ague? I guess it doesn't hurt to check the wiring and position of the box prior to tiling around it as making any repairs are best done before tiling, but if everything is wired well and the outlet is where you want it. you shouldn't need to fiddle with it in the future.

@@groutrx1415 I could be wrong, but it seemed to me in the video that the tiles above and below the box went well beyond the box's height. I could not see any outline of the electrical box. As far as "everything being wired well," with more and more DIY'ers doing their electrical wiring these days, all bets are off on what the future holds.

Your video helped me understand how to set a box for tile so im wondering if it's possible to install tile on sheetrock in kitchen. Have existing sheetrock and small budget. Looking forward to your reply

This is a great question. I don't have an issue setting tile on sheetrock in areas with low to no water exposure, like kitchen backsplashes. Use a latex modified thinset. You might watch our videos on how to set floor tiles as the same principles apply. Feel free to message me with any questions. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EOQALrWluOE.html

Been looking for how other contractors handle this. I guess the same as me, a notch. I use a V notch, easy to cut on the saw… if you remember lol 😂

What do you do if the tile only goes halfway up the outlet?
@groutrx1415
@groutrx1415 Год назад
You will need to measure and mark the tile for a compound cut. The video link below demonstrates this, but it was a floor tile. I hope this helps. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-25g7Zma-2-w.html

GFCI for garbage disposal?

Usually for all wet areas, GFCI are employed. I do not recall if an outlet was in line on this particular job.

If you forget, a 4” angle grinder with a diamond blade can get it notched easy. Make damn sure the plug and wires don’t get cut though. 😉 best to turn off power and hold them out of the way.
