Although often associated with Bob Wills, Panhandle Rag was actually written by steel guitarist Leon McAuliffe, after he left the Texas Playboys. McAuliffe made the first record of in in 1949. Bob Wills recorded it in Feb. 1969 at Bradley's Barn in Nashville as part of an album of tributes to other western swing bands. It was part of the last sessions Bob did before his stroke that ended his active sessions.
