Ye,and you changed my life. I came across your talk about neuro plasticity and behaviour, randomlly online.I was just about to skip it,when i hear you talking about your youth days and being into punk. So,as a punk myself, that speaked to me and changed my whole mindset and got into learning computer science and everything hanged.thx you for that.Cool to see you here
Tim was my hero as a teen. The older you get the more you see we are all just people who go through shit. Some good some bad. No one is above the next. Tim and punk music helped me with that lesson. Rancid was also the first punk band I ever heard. I was raised on a tiny reservation and we didnt have any access to outside culture. I was 13 and had left the reservation for foster care. A punk girl sent me a song by rancid and it changed my life.
@@alessandrorizzi4736 The song was Ruby Soho. It took me until this year to find out the reggae song that plays at the start of the song, it is called "give me power" by the stingers that plays at the start of ruby soho.
I was working at Pyramid Brewery on Gilman about 20 years ago. Four people in their 60s, maybe, sat in my section and told me their son used to play across the streeet (Gilman). The lady turned to me and asked me, “do y(ou know our son?” I asked, “who is your son?”, and she said, “Tim Armstrong”. I said, “I do not know your son personally, but I know who he is.” Very nice people,I thought it was weird that they would think I knew their son. Tim, your parents are very nice people. I hope you have a great relationship with them.
Thank you for this. I grew up with Tim in Albany. We played in many pre Basic Radio/Op Ivy bands together. Our first gig was at the Albany High School talent show in 1983 as Ratt Patrol with Tim's brother Greg on drums. We then continued with a bunch of ska bands like The Unkool and Urban Noise. The East Bay had many all age clubs in those days, and there was great music everywhere. It fills my heart with joy to see Tim and Matt still creating such great music.
You must have so many great stories! Man I'm jealous, not gonna lie, Tim has been one of my favourie musicians ever since I've first heard Op Ivy and Rancid!
Bro - your channel is so well done. Your videos are very well researched and edited, and you have a knack for simply telling a story, not in a gimmicky or clickbaity way Thanks for telling it how it is.
17 year old humans typically suck and have no clue about life at all, but these guys in Op Ivy are a top 10 (maybe 5) band for me. It's freaking insane how good they were at such a young age
It’s still so weird to be that he’s my parents’ age. He’s going to be 60 next year. That’s blowing my mind. He just doesn’t seem like he’s born in the 60s to me for some reason. He’s totally a boomer.
I’ve never heard Matt’s speaking voice! He’s really well spoken! Not sure what I was expecting haha brilliant video I’m excited for the rest! Lifelong rancid/op ivy fan here ❤ you got yourself a new subscriber 🫡
I grew up listening to Tim and liked his music. People even said I looked like him. Now that I'm 41 years old and haven't listened to him or music in general for many years, I just came across this video and honestly wanted to say- all the hardships people go through in life are from their own choices and how they wish to take them on. Many walk alone and continually fall or go around in circles because they have no real outward guidance or counsel or know where the power lies. They don't listen to that light within themselves that shows you all is vanity and emptiness, and it doesn't matter if you're at the bottom or at the top. The same reproves you in secret when you do wrong and shows you everything you ever did. By heeding to it it will make your crooked paths straight and cause you to walk uprightly and give you understanding. Then you will see the true grace which brings salvation. It will give you power and break off from you any addiction. The same shows you what your thoughts are, showing what is evil or perverse or wicked, so you will resist it and follow that which is good. This you have within you. You have a treasure within you that brings salvation, and money or gold cannot buy.
And out come the wolves was the album that changed everything for me. Fun times, maybe too much chaos. But that album had a huge impact on me. The first punk album I bought.
Same here. I had enough money to buy a cd while I was visiting my dad. I think I may have heard one rancid song before. I remember looking at the album cover for the first time in the music shop. I remember thinking, "Rancid... such a Badass band name" I had to pick between rancid 2000 and out come the wolves. I loved the name of the album. Boy, am I glad I picked that gem up. I listened to it on repeat that whole trip. It never gets old and was my window into one of the best genres of music.
Tim Armstrong has the worst sounding voice in music history. Also, Tim Armstrong is my favorite singer in music history. Rancid make up the Holy triumvirate up punk music, along with Bad Religion and NOFX.
I love your channel dude, awesome subjects! Since I've found your channel I've been rediscovering my love for punk rock. I now realize that punk rock is a huge part of the music that feels like home to me. All thanks to you friend!
Some of that footage when he's interviewing DHC and stuff was from a local cable show I worked on. I got to watch all those raw tapes of Elephant Parts and Basic Radio. Good times. Also that show at the end with Rancid.. I was there!
Out Comes The Wolves defined a summer for me. I was actually 33. I had been into punk since I was about 19 but I always saw Rancid as being kind of poserish. But as I got older I didn't think that way any longer. I had lost my punk roots due to a bad heroin habit. But here I was at 33, quiting dope and going back to alcohol. I was hanging out with a couple of guys tems years my junior. AJ, my friend, he was about as punk as they come. I was charging my hair again and having sex again. It was a great summer. I met my love I'm still with. I hear these songs and I'm there again.. AJ is gone now, victim of heroin overdose. Well punk has been highjacked by the new left, this authoritarian racist bastard child of what I knew as a young man when I was a leftist. Yea, no reason to be punk any longer..
I grew up in country bumfuckville tennesse. A population of 700. Rancid and so many other punk and reggae bands were my go to. I so wanted to see the ghettos tim talked about but all i had was open fields and cattle pastures
I've never been a huge Rancid fan....but I do enjoy several of their albums. That said, I've been an Operation Ivy fan since I first heard them in 1994. Literally just bought a new copy of the Energy LP about 2 weeks ago. It's as good as it's always been, too. Love it...
Operation ivy forever ones band that I still listened everyday with clash, ramones , xtc, lou reed, buzzcocks , toy dolls, devo, ramones, all day long and dream with them

SAMHAIN!!!
I remember back in the day when I was touring in punk bands, we use to make fun of rancid and especially tim, for being the biggest poser shills of the punk community as well as the offspring. Don't get me wrong, Operation ivey is tremendous. But, Tim has always felt disingenuous and phony to me. Like a switchblade hair comb. Iyiyi
This... Became the,, crusty punk, vegan Simi homeless, look, see shaving looks like you have a place to,, "shave" ... Cheers from Punk Rock Orange County California... Always find new music
60 years old. I was gardening for an old man, an a nurse arrived for the old guys blood test. Pointed to my RANCID t-shirt, do you like them. She'd seen them in America . Had a lovely chat about punk rock. Long live Tim you have bought me so much joy.
I met Matt and Tim at the Loft in Austin Texas in 88 at an Op Ivy show there. Tim was bald and I had a double fin charge bright red. These " grunge " kids were making fun of the " big haired" people and being rude, which would've resulted in a brawl,if Tim hadn't stopoed the damn song and set the bullys straight. I thanked him and hung out had sone beers and on my way. 2 years later i see Tim with a bright red hawk on Mtv. I like to think that I was part of the transition of Tim to full on punk, but i really know it was a combination of events just like that which molded these guts into a respected punk band worldwide. These dudes are stand up guys.
I was listening to op ivy cassette tape rolling across the dessert in desert storm and rancid CD's doing convoy security in Iraqi freedom. Still haven't made it to a concert.... it'll happen
