In his memoir Telling Stories, Tim Burgess lifted the lid on life with The Charlatans and their experiences at the heart of the 1990s 'Madchester' scene. In this event, filmed live at the 2016 Edinburgh International Book Festival, Burgess is joined by crimewriter and fellow music fan Ian Rankin to discuss their passion for vinyl. Burgess shares recommendations from a stellar cast of friends - including Iggy Pop and Paul Weller - that he has tracked down in record shops across the world.

Never really accepted by them because they felt he was copying Ian Brown's look, moves, voice...which he was. Plus, yes he was from Cheshire too which didn't help.

@@sratus I was a massive fan of the Charlatans, until I followed him on twitter. He's the biggest try hard ive ever seen. 50 odd yr old man behaving like a 11 yo school girl.

@@RT-zk7yr Shame. He's not trying hard, he's embracing what makes him happy and in touch. I don't use twitter at all, but know he does. Tim is about his music, and if he enjoys making it and people buy it, then job done. Tim isn't the best vocalist in the world, but he's a better singer than Ian Brown. Oasis were also heavily influenced by the Roses. The whole madchester scene influenced more than just Tim and the Charlatans, not all of them from Manchester. Does it really matter. It was more about a scene than where people came from... but 20 miles away is pretty close.
