Beetlejuice's behavior is not hand waved away by the characters, who grow to fear and revile him. The Maitland's ordeal with him is depicted as a demonic infestation. He passes himself off as harmless. 'impish'. to disguise malevolent intent. The veil drops as things escalate and our heroes are put into direct conflict with him. At no point does the film or the director try to excuse him. He is unambiguously the villain who must be vanquished. Beetlejuice ingratiating himself is not the same as the story doing it.
Ed Wood is still the best movie of Tim Burton's career. It's a masterpiece imo. The film is similar to something that was found on the street and brought into a museum.

Here before 1 million views! Ed Wood is my favorite Tim Burton film. I love the satire and humor in it so much. I applaud the choice to film it in black and white. It really adds a nice retro look and feel to Wood's mostly b&w films. Burton was the perfect choice to direct it, too. He must've seen Wood as a kindred spirit of sorts.
I really appreciated this video. It really helped me resolve my concerns about Tim Burton. In particular, the interviews pushed me to see if Tim has ASD, which is something my son has. Knowing and learning with him, it dawns on me that a lot of the noise around Tim may actually have a lot to do with this. It especially drove me to read the GeekQuality article again - which kinda pissed me off because it omitted his ASD completely. It's sad that someone would dig so deep to make such statements and imply a self-imposed outsider nature without presenting the material completely. There are a lot of artists that now require separating their art from their person, and it's really rare that I find myself getting to a resounding resolution on that topic, but I did here personally. I had a longer response written, but I thought making my point with a thank you is actually the best thing to say.
I am so happy Dark Shadows and Alice in Wonderland made it into your top 10 as I've repeatedly seen them on the bottom of most ranking lists I've seen. Dark Shadows is a good old gothic time and my experience with Alice is so similar to yours! I was a freshman in high school and was so into Tim at the time so it came out at the perfect time for me!
I wanted to wait until I watched the entire documentary (and that is what it is) before commenting, and now that I have, I am utterly blown away. You manage to both lovingly explore his career while also raising very important questions about his work, and you hold him accountable. It is not blind admiration you present, but rather exploration and critique, and it's pretty amazing. I look for a lot of the things you talk about in movies--diversity, representation, intent--and, as you have honed your writing, editing, and construction skills and, especially, your voice--you speak to issues important to me, and do so with awesome conviction. Burton's response to his racial blindspots is not only inadequate but frankly ignorant and offensive. It's disappointing, and I would think, as a self-described outsider, he might find more empathy for this very accurate feedback. I'm really moved by this video, honestly, your approach, your execution. Really great work. As far as Burton is concerned, I have long had these issues with him, while still, as a freak, the weird kid, the one that didn't belong, connecting with him, both his subjects, his aesthetic, and his formative influences (pets, Universal Monsters, etc). Ed Wood is my favorite, particularly the compassion he treats Wood with. The scene where Ed confesses to Kathy that he likes to wear women's clothes and she thinks it over, asks him if he likes being with women, and then says "Okay" is one of my favorite movie moments ever. Edward Scissorhands is also right there, with Frankenweenie, Batman Returns, Nightmare Before Christmas, Pee Wee's Big Adventure (sorry, I'm the old person you were talking about), and Vincent not far behind. While there are things I love about Beetlejuice--Geena Davis, Winona Ryder, the visuals and imagination--I never liked it, particularly because of what a normalized sex pest Beetleguesse is. It's not funny, it's tiresome, and it takes away from what is otherwise an imaginative movie. Anyway, thanks for all the great work you do! Keep it scary!

Big fish is genuinely my favorite movie ever. Point blank. Honestly I couldn't even tell you why. Its such a deviation from any other favorite movie of mine. It is definitely messy at points, and there are definitely things wrong with it. A couple of the scenes make me cringe every time i watch. But more lines from this movie are ingrained in my mind than any other. Its stupid and my friends always look at me funny when I suggest it, but they're always crying by the end of it. The utter joy I get by sharing it with other people is crazy. The way it explores familial relationships KILLS me. Absolutely gutted every. single. time. I'm always crying by the river scene. I adore the way it explores it's narrative. I love the visuals. The wierd, golden, dream-like quality it has. And man of the hour is an absolute BANGER. It genuinely has lived in my head for so many years rent free. I think about it frequently. I think this movie altered my brain chemistry.
I appreciate the time and effort that you put into this! I haven't seen every single film that Burton has directed, but it's hard for me to see me ever loving one of his films more than Edward Scissorhands.. part of it is nostalgia but it's truly a magical film that's one of a kind and still holds up today.. Kim telling Edward that she loves him is the best "I love you" that I've seen on film and Edward just closing his eyes in response to finally hearing those words with the score in the background gets me every single time lol.. I'm also obligated to mention that Edward aesthetically had potential to be an all time slasher/horror villain.. visually he's nightmare fuel lol.. I love that he's a sweetheart character though.. I'm not here to comment on scandals or controversies that I know nothing about, but I remember seeing a different Ricci interview talking about digitally enhanced breasts for a Sleepy Hollow poster and they showed the poster as well.. I just looked to make sure I wasn't crazy and it was from a Ricci interview with Conan O'Brien in 1999.. I'm not bringing this up for the creeps, just for educational purposes.. also I wouldn't blame Burton for that, he has no say in that kind of stuff I would imagine, but who knows, I'm not here for that.. Also I'm not saying that the Ricci/Depp age gap wasn't wide, but they've known each other for awhile, were friends and very comfortable with each other.. they met when Ricci was filming Mermaids with Winona Ryder.. Winona and Depp were obviously a huge Hollywood couple back then, so they became friends.. they starred together in The Man Who Cried the next year.. they also worked together on Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas a year before Sleepy Hollow.. Once again thanks for the video, I'm sure it wasn't easy and it's also reminding me of a few of his films I still need to see and completely forgot about!
Oh no, I didn't mean to imply that Burton was responsible for that poster. I should've clarified. Marketing is an entirely different beast that directors usually don't get to have much involvement with. That's changed somewhat today, but still remains largely true unfortunately.
One of the things you forgot to mention was that Mars Attacks did feature a few black cast members. Jackie Brown's husband is in fact a huge character and does alot of really cool stuff,even telling a few of the survivors to go on out without him as he proceeds to kick Martian butt.
Yes, but that would go against the whole manufactured, nitpicky intent behind the "scandalous" buzzword in the title, which is really the only flaw in this otherwise all encompassing & solid YT doc. If it hadn't been a tug of war between in depth, director profile & neurotic, Zoomer activism soapbox, it would've been completely on point. But hey, this was a profile done through a personal, subjective lens, & it is what it is. She gave Dark Shadows its flowers, so that's a win in my book.
As a kid, he was the only character I was emotionally engaged with in Mars Attack. He was just a genuinely, wholesome character and I loved it when he shows up at the end.

This is a well done video, I appreciate the time and effort that you put into it. Quick note, Chris Sarandon voiced Jack in Nightmare, Elfman did the singing. Also, I was 18 when I saw Pee-Wee and it remains one of my favorites, so not because of childhood nostalgia. That said, I can completely understand why people wouldn't like it. Regarding Sweeney Todd, not only did they cast people who couldn't sing, but it was composed by Sondheim whose music is incredibly challenging to sing Also it didn't help that he cast people who were professionally trained singers in the other points. The boy was exceptional.
These deep dives with the reviews are positively delightful.. I like hearing a perspective from someone who's divorced from my peer group to get a different take is great. You have a pretty nuanced takes from the dozen or so videos I have seen. You don't bash anything just because you don't like a particular project.

I have to say that i loved your deep dive, although i have to also comment that i don't see any sense for the race concerns regarding Tim Burton and the "comunities that he has hurt" is very strong worded and unecessary. For example if you grew up in a mostly white people invironment and if your going to portrait it in movies, i think you have every right to cast whomever. Plus i always think this with diversity; it is unfair for actors in general to be picked, to fill a diversity requirement, ONLY based on their skin primordialy, that feels very superficial. The need for diversity is already in motion, what i have a problem with is that it happens were it is unecessary, for example why Cast a black actress for Ariel, in the Little Mermaid? You have Moana, Princess Tiana, and the best part about story telling is that you can make new classics, that REQUIRE black actors. I also have other comments but i like having nice discussions about all sorts of topics.
Isn't the "boogie" issue a bit of a stretch? The "bogeyman" has existed for centuries in multiple cultures and languages, including with the "boogie" spelling. Does that mean any reference to the "boogie man" is racist? I'd never even heard this definition before. The only definitions of "boogie" I ever knew were: bogeyman, dancing, or something that came out of your nose. I can see why Burton would want to use the "boogie" spelling , since this is a movie musical, and why the character would be designed to look like a sack, since a variation on the bogeyman in some countries is the "Sack Man," who carries away children in a sack.
I see what you're saying, I've only known it as a term that refers to dancing so while I don't think I'm the right person to determine whether or not it's insensitive, I do think it was probably just a coincidence that they chose a word that also had this more derogatory background.
I like Tim Burton's films for sure but I'm not as in love with them as I was when I was a kid. Well except for Corpse Bride & Sleepy Hollow, I still adore those. I wish I could say the same for Nightmare Before Christmas but being a teen in the 2000s and seeing Jack Skellington EVERYWHERE got exhausting to where while I still really enjoy the film, I'm not as heavily into it like I used to be 😅 Also I watched Ed Wood for the first time this year and I really enjoyed that one as well, I can see why many loved it. That said, I realize that I haven't watched all of his films as I still haven't seen his other films Big Eyes, Big Fish, and PeeWee's Big Adventure but the films I have seen, I do appreciate and like his aesthetic, he's quite creative and his drawing philosophy is oh so relatable as an artist myself. But as far as the claims of him being racist? Nah mate, I don't think he is. While I can understand why some other POC were turned off by what he said when he explained why he doesn't tend to feature racial minority characters as leads or anything like that, his explanation was fair enough. He simply has his own aesthetic vision that he likes to shoot for with pale, eerie characters usually in English periods. Yes, non-white people existed in those times but he's simply not interested in making stories about that and that is fine. I follow a lot of black artists who draw majority black characters and I wouldn't dare say that they should be drawing other racial characters and well, it's the same deal with how I view Tim Burton's personal choice. And from what I recall at this time, he hasn't said anything inflammatory or hateful towards non-white people so as far as I'm concerned, he's okay in my book. Just a creative man with his particular vision. That said, I will agree that it was for the best that the character of Beetlejuice was not played by a black actor. As much as I know I personally wouldn't think anything of it and would've just taken him as a character and not a representation of black people, I understand that the way things were back in the 1980s was very muddled so it wouldn't have boded well at the time. And I'm sorry but what? When I watched Nightmare Before Christmas as a kid (and continued watching it), I didn't think Oogie Boogie looked like a KKK member at all 😂 I'm sorry but that is definitely a reach. He just looked like a creepy pillow monster (filled with bugs, ew) in my eyes. And as for him being voiced by a black actor, again, it meant nothing to me personally. He sounded so lively and charismatic that race was the last thing on my mind whenever I'd watch his scenes and I know for a fact that many other kids, at least millennials and older zoomers felt this way as well. I'm sorry but I HATE this argument, it's so obnoxious in my honest opinion, placing issue somewhere that was never there in the first place, at least not with how it was received by the masses at the time anyway. Extending to this with the whole "woke" and "PC" stuff, I do believe that these things do exist but sometimes people who make these claims misuse it. It's not "woke" to have a gay or racial minority character existing so long as they have an actual personality and well-thought (or at least decent) narrative and some of these people don't seem to understand that. However as someone who is black, I personally don't see it as applaud-worthy when you race-swap a character. To me, it feels cheap and lazy and I would much rather have a new character who happens to be a racial minority instead of one who was race swapped, essentially giving us a hand-me-down. Screw that, we deserve better than that, give us original non-white characters who can carve their own legacy and potential icon status. But that's just my own opinion of course.

As soon as the video started, I knew you had a real vision for what you wanted to do with it and you absolutely killed it, Kylie! I don't say this lightly, but this is now the definitive Tim Burton video on RU-vid. It's all encompassing in a way that took me by surprise. I knew it would be deep, but this is super deep! This is easily your best video now. I always say that with these deep dives, but it keeps being true! And the thing that really knocked me out was the pacing. Even though the video is long none of it drags. You made a literal feature documentary that somehow feels short! No idea how you did that. And I've seen more video essays on RU-vid than is probably healthy for one person (seriously! haha) and this is next level stuff!! Keep doing you Kylie because no one does it better!

I hated Sleepy Hollow back in the day, but I think it requires a rewatch. I love Mars Attacks for a similar reason: it's an homage to a different style of film. As you said that Mars Attacks was a shitty 50s sci-fi B-movie in the vein of Ed Wood's work. Sleepy Hollow is as Hammer Horror film. A couple years back I watched a bunch of Hammer horror films and followed by Sleepy Hollow and I loved it. The blood is fake and vibrant (like Hammer), the dialog is a weird mix of purple prose and "humans don't talk like that" (like Hammer), and even the batshit plotting in the end is *so much* a Hammer film. It's weirdly horny, but in a 1960's British cinema sort of way. It is basically Tim Burton's take on Hammer, but with his style woven in and a bigger budget. Try it again, specifically after a marathon of Hammer horror. You may not think it is top 5, but I think it will be in the top half of the list.
I still consider Nicolas Cage not getting the chance to be Superman to be one of the missed opportunities and biggest fumbles Hollywood has ever done ever like just picture the Nicolas Cage as one of kindest , most gentle and iconic superheroes ever like what a miss lol

Great video! I really like when you do these deep dives. There are a ton of other interesting horror directors, but I have to ask: Have you thought about doing the same thing with actors known for their horror movie roles -- Vincent Price, Jamie Lee Curtis, etc.?
That's fantastic! It would be so much fun to watch deep dives about both of them for different reasons. On the one hand, Vincent Price made so many acknowledged classics. On the other hand, a lot of people only know Robert Englund for Freddy Krueger but he made so many fun horror movies before and after the Nightmare movies. Jamie Lee Curtis is interesting to think about, too. She became the definitive scream queen based on making back-to-back: Halloween, the Fog, Prom Night, Terror Train, Road Games, Halloween II, and, as narrator, the documentary Coming Soon . While she's mostly made non-horror movies since then, she does keep renewing her horror credentials by making at least one Halloween movie every decade for the last SIX decades. Isn't that crazy?
Both "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and 2001's "Planet of the Apes" got me into Tim Burton when I was a very young kid. Then I watched his other dark fantasy/comedy/sci-fi/horror movies such as "Sleepy Hollow", "Sweeney Todd", "Beetlejuice", "Frankenweenie", "Mars Attacks" and 2010's "Alice in Wonderland". And both "Ed Wood" and "Big Eyes" are the best biopics that Burton directed.💯

My brothers played a prank while a pool was dug out but hadn't been lined in concrete. One of them took a wooden stake and said a vampire was buried in it. They scared the tar out of the youngest at the time (not me back then) by hammering the stake into the ground and screaming as if the vampire was dying. weird cg it’s like a 50s ed wood vibe for sure. yeah planet of the apes just scaaaaarrrreeed me as a kid. the faces just freaked me out. loved beetlejuice as a kid but yeah, if i saw it for the first time now outside of the aesthetic there’s a lot that would probably fall flat. but i like a lot of the concepts! though I’m surprised miss ava green’s house is higher than beetlejuice. batman movies are totally weird cooky craziness, but love the PD, was so immersive as a kid. didn’t realize sleepy hollow was relatively gory! might have to revisit that one too. age gap is icky though. dumbo is higher! aight eva and Colin are great I’ll give ya that. and danny devito. surprised you like more of burtons stuff than carpenter or craven! vecna and snape lol great casting. lmaooo your stoned joanna gotta get around to frankenweenie! shoutouts to treasure planet lol lol yeah charlie/willy wonka and the chocolate factory and alice in wonderland are great trip pacing vibes. allegedly lol. lots of different environments and playing with scale and stuff. but again, i ride or die for my boy gene wilder. and the chocolate shots for the opening title sequence are amazing, the director was a documentarian so it has a realistic style that contrasts the surreal factory stuff. love the 60s version! t’was my childhood jam. big eyes i haven’t seen either but seems solid. great cast. love edward scissorhands. but haven’t seen it in a while, i might feel you on the lots of points vibe but not necessarily my favorite on a rewatch. but it is so nostalgic i am admittedly partial. nightmare before christmas too, loved it as a kid so it’s special for me. like a warm blanket. lol big feels on ewan/ethan/drad, great actors. rosa salazar is one of my favorite actors recently, she has some really great picks. and brian tyree henry of course. love the love for big fish. definitely better handling of daddy issues than charlie haha. wow dark shadows is kinda surprisingly highly ranked! but I do love the campy vibes, cast, and alice cooper appearance. ed wood is one of my favorites. love the bela teaching him to hypnotize scene, the orson welles scene, and how the lgbtq+ aspect is handled. and of course the celebration of filmmaking, otherness and the creative spirit! ok ok, i get your connection with alice- but better than ed wood?! ok, you’ve made a solid argument- and the praise for the score lmaooo ok it’s great, you’ve convinced me! aw dang now I gotta see frankenweenie. sweetly put. love the furry fam. corpse bride is really great. almost like a more masterful approach to ideas in nightmare before christmas and beetlejuice. ok, i feel you on burton and addams being a great match. love the show. but i have too much nostalgia to rank it as high as you. aw vincent is #1! still gotta see that, love vincent price. it’s funny how sometimes artists can nail their style so early on. wow wow wow. i deserve a treat?! kylie you better be treatin the fuck outta yourself today, you really knocked it out of the park with this one!! nailed it. killed it. crushed it. all the metaphors! you managed to maintain your casual fun vibe while pushing it further with with more interview footage, edits, and clips- and it totally works! it feels super thoroughly researched and yet still casual and fun and of course funny!
