Hands up who remembers the cast if the original Alien movie? I believed they were a normal crew… a mixture of ordinary people doing their normal job… I could relate to them. Why are the cast of Romulus all so young? I didn’t believe any of them had done a days work in the short lives. The decision to make the ‘exposition android’ look the same as Ash from the first movie was a stupid one… the cgi was dreadful and it was being used to solve a problem that wasn’t necessary in the first place… if you can’t make it look like Ash… then don’t make it an Ash lookalike?! I don’t recall any reference to the ‘Artificial Persons’ all looking the same because they were a particular model? Why would that be the case? Wouldn’t it be tricky recognising your android when others were about? 🤦🏻‍♂️ As for the half human half Xenomorph thing at the end ! F**k me!! I had to try not to laugh! Exactly how was Wayland hoping to use these things to work in places where humans couldn’t?… when all they want to do is kill for some reason. I had high hopes for this movie but unfortunately it fell flat for me.

I would’ve liked it a lot more if there were more than 4 characters that could be killed, it left me wanting the movie to have been about the original Romulus crew

I also think the franchise needs to get away from certain things like the 3rd act countdown to major explosion and the final hidden alien on the ship when they think everything’s fine now. It would just be nice to see something else done

Omg you are so on point! I love the setup with alien romulus! There's good acting, expertly crafted props and CGI, virtually everything were created with a purpose/reason in mind and there's resolution to each of the setup. Though I would say there might have been some pacing/logic issues with it, for example, when the aliens close in, Rain and Andy even have time to talk about their old jokes... Which is a bit weird. Also, Rain told Kay to go back to the ship by herself.. That was a bit forced, I mean she was so badly injured and everything, at least send her back to the ship first.... But overall, it's still a great movie of the year that you can't miss!

interesting to hear you so enthusiastic about the movie - i feel like this was a remake of the 1st alien targeting a younger audience who may not have seen the original...and when i saw it there were a bunch of 20 somethings in the theater - LAUGHING. all i could think was FAIL for that target audience. lol but im glad to hear you enjoyed it for what it was!

Alien:Romulus is probably the first major Hollywood film I've given a 10/10 since The Dark Knight. I do have a few minor issues with it (such as Ian Holm's vfx), but this film is so damn entertaining. I'd say that 95% of the fan service elements are kickass. This is the movie that The Force Awakens could have been.

Best horror so far has to be cuckoo. Back to Romulus was good but i thought there was a lot of fan service. To me i thought it was 1 2 & 4 all mixed together. The original parts were very good though. Taking Ripleys words from the Aliens was cringe but i would give it a 3 out of 5

The fan service is Deadpool and Wolverine is based on acknowledgment of one of the best casting decisions in movie history and a character arc of decades. Alien fan service is based on “We’re desperate and have no new ideas”

One of my siblings likes this series. Not that much of a fan myself, although I liked Prometheus, and the ideas explored in that series. Body horror really isn't my cup of tea. In any case, the visuals, especially the outer space stuff, those planet rings specifically, were...stellar. After thinking about the movie for a few days (it left an impression for sure), I realized that the movie was a testament to human ingenuity, as the others in series. And it was difficult to ignore the class dynamics of the movie. These characters, essentially everyday working people, got a glimpse behind the curtain, so to speak, and saw the machinations of a conspiracy. Nice review. Like hearing your thoughts. Hopefully, the channel covers the Salem's Lot show on cable?

If you loved Poltergeist you should watch The Changeling from 1980. Spielberg actually screened that film for the cast and crew of Poltergeist during its production, saying that this was the vibe he wanted. Those two movies are IMO the best supernatural-horror films of all time.

Agree with most of your review. It was a great film, but for me the downside isn't fan service, but it was how the plot felt like a mashup of the previous Alien/Prometheus stories. Would have been nice to see it branch out a bit more. (Which is more an issue with the industry right now than just this movie) Still thoroughly enjoyed it and looking forward to another watch

The newest Alien movie is so far removed by the first movie, and that is okay, we are not the same audience we were when the Alien movie came out, we have seen many movies, many developed effects etc. that is also why I cant hate too much on Halloween either, this is now that was then and boy do I remember the first Alien, comic books, rubber aliens at the toy store and the reviewers drumming it up to be the biggest scare in history, and it WAS but we are all harder to scare these days, anyways hope you know what I mean here.

I loved the movie. It was awesome that they used mostly practical effects instead of cgi with the aliens! I loved andy he was awesome. I would like to see what happened on the research ship that we only got to see the aftermath of. I cant wait for the dvd to come out and see a directors cut and deleted scenes

Pretty sure they did actually build an animatronic for Rook, you see it in some shots but it’s the close up shots that just had the cgi put on top of the face. But yeah even if they kept him in the shadows it maybe wouldn’t have looked so ugly😂

It's my favorite movie of the year. I'm going to watch it tomorrow for a third time. It captures everything I love about space horror. I agree that they used the Xenomorph's blood to the fullest effect. The facehuggers in that one scene even reminded me of the Tremors from Tremors 2. I loved it!!

I loved it too. My only minor complaint was that they could've cut out 15 mins of the first hour. Too much time world building for a bunch of characters we knew would be mostly dead in an hour. I hope you do the Alien franchise ranking as a Live - I think those are your most fun to watch and participate in!

“And I, will mute you, I won’t let you have access to communicate with me” . SAY IT LOUDER QUEEN !!!! Honestly, it never crossed my mind that this film was doing fan service, if it’s a direct sequel, of course there has to be a connection to the og, are people ok ?? It’s not like the film is only about the characters from the og, if anything, Romulus works as a stand alone movie. Scream 5&6 have A LOT of fan service all around yet I didn’t see complaints about it 🙄

Great review. I agreed with you. It was a fun installment in the alien franchise. Like a haunted house experience, that also managed to tie the various lore together and pay homage to the previous films. I loved seeing Ash. I didn't think the vfx work was that bad, in fact some shots were great? Like you said, he is a robot and supposed to have a uncanny valley effect. Way too many haters online these days. I think cinéphiles like yourself and me got it. It's trying to give us a good time. That said, please watch Prometheus and Covenant. They are really fun and prometheus asks some big Sci fi questions that lean into religion, mythology and evolution.(watch high for best effect) I thought it was really cool. The way the story was for Romulus, I felt you could have got Fassbender back to finish his David arc. I wont spoil the end of those movies but with the premise for this movie it could have tied up all the loose ends. Fans of Covenant will know what I mean. Thank you for the time and energy in your video. Subscribed and you look absolutely beautiful too. Have a good day ❤

The absolute greatest marketing 4 a movie in my opinion was 4 the original Cloverfield.J.J Abrams only showed 1 quick trailer at the beginning of the 1st Ironman where a bunch of friends are partying on a rooftop & its all being done in 1st person point of view when theres suddenly an explosion in the distance. In a panic they all run downstairs 2 only 2 see the head of the statue of liberty come flying down the street with a bunch of claw marks on it. No title no nothing & 4 the next 10 months you heard absolutely nothing, no more trailers, no spoilers no nothing.Everything was kept perfectly under wraps until it finally came out.The point of my rambling is its just insane how much they give away in the trailers is just mind blowing! I hate going into a movie havin already seen most of the best parts in one of the 5 different trailers!!

Fan service films hit or miss with me depending on one deciding factor: 1) Was it done out of love for the franchise and to just have a fun film? 2) Or was it done for fear of stepping out of the comfort zone and hoping to tug on sentimental strings for brownie points? Basically, if they just say nah we just wanted a fun movie to reminisce about, I can respect that.

To me this movie is epicly Amazing and beautiful. But, I do had a few issue with it, and my biggest issue is the character. The only character that I found good is Andy the Synthetic, as a character with fabricate emotion, he feel really complex and I get emotional for him so much than the other characters. The other Characters the human character is pretty much one dimensional, just your typical the kind maternal, the strong head, the douche, and the boyfriend. The station for me also feel underutilized and didn't get explore enough, and there's quite a halt between every moment. Also there's that weapon explanation dump by one of the character that feel force, because the way he explained it is like it was a presentation. Putting all that aside I really love it, it's amazing, beautiful and thrilling. I love the finale, but I do think a number of Alien fan will get turned off by it. I agree with you, the Fan Service wasn't necessarily bad. The movie utilize it well enough into the story and didn't feel as jarring as how fan service in a movie used to be. The call back line, I do had a problem with that, but it's not that annoying. Also the movie add and show enough new things, and it make the fan service and all the call back well fitted. I'm happy that the movie was going well in the theater and became the number 1 box office of this month.

Love the review! I have been obsessed with this movie <3 Just one thing, as far as I am aware... Rook WAS an animatronic. They had just used DeepFake CGI to try and correct different aspects of the animatronic that had looked 'off'. Super surprised that so many people found the effect to look poor. I personally thought it looked really good.

Also it was the best movie I've seen this year. It's absolutely oozing with everything that makes a good alien film and MORE. 11/10. As a blue collar worker my whole life I found the characters relatable lm a deep spiritual level. I felt them. Big time. It's great to be represented in cinema. Every person in the cast was top notch and I can not wait to see where they go with their respective careers.
