As a Heidecker fan of many years, I can count on one hand how many authentic seeming interviews I’ve seen, so this was awesome. I sometimes struggle to explain why I think he is the funniest, most brilliant comedic mind of our time, but I thought he did a good job of explaining why his style of humor works so well. I wish everyone I met could watch the entirety of “On Cinema” especially the courtroom hearings and “Decker” as that would explain much of my personality immediately haha.

It's just such a natural & genuine type of humor. Like you can tell him & everyone involved enjoys this type of humor themselves. You can feel the fun they're having & thought put into it. I'm still amazed by the attention to detail & continuity in his Tim universe. Bringing back that Star Trek reference at the trial all the way from like s2 of On Cinema was genius.

Tim’s observation of the rise of “literalism” rings so true! I’ve known people who get worked up with anger at public art (especially poetry) because they don’t immediately understand it. But at the same time there’s a weird reversal of that among mean-spirited people - like when trump says ill-informed, cruel things and his supporters spin it as a deeply artistic allegory. Maybe these are all symptoms of rising tensions - especially among a certain kind of person who’s too online, in a bubble, and otherwise fixated on petty infringements of their selfish preferences?

9:00 that opera part is one of the best parts of that whole standup- it’s the perfect nod to the out of date “Tim Allen man’s man” stuff of the early 90’s. The opera was the go-to for “the stupid wife wants to go to (some stereotypical feminine thing)” goofy rightwing ‘man’s men’, and it’s so specific to that 90’s era cause aside from boomers and those cheesy, tired jokes they still have, no one really ever talks about the opera anymore and hasn’t since like, 1998.

I connected with Tim & Eric because I love how their stuff provokes you to ask yourself what you think is funny about it. Or if you do. This interview (and Heidecker's closely observed reactionary stand-up character and the Office Hours Bill Maher bit with Fred Armisen) puts the meta right out in the open. Comedy needs conventions and norms to push against. (What's George Carlin's most famous routine? Seven Words You Can't Say On Television. That was from 1972, decades before anyone came up with "political correctness" or "wokeism" or "cancel culture." Boundaries are the norm, not something new, and a performer who can't figure out how to adapt to changing audiences is going to get left behind. That's always been true.) If something makes you laugh and you have an appreciation of comedy, you might want to ask yourself what you think is funny about it. Any clown can slip on a banana peel and maybe you laugh or maybe you don't, but context and execution are everything. What's funny about it? A lot of stand-up is just a communal ritual, where the comedian's intonations and rhythms tell the audience when they're expected to laugh on cue and they respond like Pavlov's dogs. (They laugh or they clap when the little bell rings -- and maybe they even salivate.) Hacky comedy is not edgy. Chappelle's trans obsession mystifies me for the reasons Heidecker outlines here: What's it to you if people wanting to express who they feel they are? What's going to happen in those "all gender bathrooms" that couldn't happen anywhere else? It's not just pointlessly cruel, it's willfully stupid.

I've been a huge fan of Tim & Eric and Tim, himself, since they started with "Tom Goes to the Mayor" in 2004 - and Heidecker was in an incredibly open and articulate mood, here. Probably the best interview with him that I've seen. To me, he's just the greatest comic voice of the 21st century. I just think the culture is way too noisy and impervious to irony and satire right now (his point about the difference between "ranting" about certain things in the interview - and the *satirizing* in his work of those things - is the clearest delineation between what he does and what most comics do these days) to appreciate what he's doing to the degree that he should be appreciated. It was great to see him say things here that needed to be said about a lot of issues raised. Thanks for giving him the space to say them.

Many of the same people who complain about cancel culture are the same people boycotting Target over pride month, or Bud Light because they sent a trans person a can with her face on it, or Nike over the Kaepernick stuff, or even further than that when Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks criticized George Bush over the Iraq War and the Dixie Chicks music was taken off of country radio stations and people burned their albums, or like how certain books have been banned by Conservatives like Ron DeSantis in states like Florida, abortion being banned in Conservative led states, or banning people from being taught about things like CRT and so on and so forth.

Gosh, this is so refreshing. Somehow today, I've been seeing a lot of clips of white male comics just giving the most basic takes on trans people,and for Tim to be so nonchalantly open and understanding almost surprised me. ps. Speaking of Ricky Gervais, one of the clips I mentioned was Norm and Stephen Merchant really fumbling their way through a conversation about Caitlyn Jenner.
@Trenz0
@Trenz0 9 месяцев назад
The "white male" is entirely unnecessary here and honestly really cringe. This is a huge thing across all comics on RU-vid. Hate to break it to you but transphobia is prevalent across all races, ethnicities and genders. It's the hot topic and many people have only now had to confront what it means and as such do not understand it. When people don't understand things it's very much a flight or fight response. Mainstream conversation is just now confronting concepts and discussions that have been present in LGBT spaces for decades. It's a social growing pain. I'm not excusing people being shitty to trans people I'm just trying to clear the air and confront a pigeonholed argument
@plush1993
@plush1993 6 месяцев назад
"Why do you care" is always the most important question with regards to the trans issue. I always wonder why the left doesn't just start with that question. If you can't answer it in any meaningful way, you're unable to really talk about it. Why would your opinion have any weight if you can't provide a valuable reason to care?

I have to comment since I am a timhead, and also trans You can joke about trans topics (I'm trans), and plenty of comedians do! But if you do it the way Chapelle/Gervais do it, by just openly mocking trans people and making them the butt of the joke in a way that is just mean, that's just not cool and I'm not going to give them my money. Words can hurt, and some of these jokes are just nasty and show the performer's negative view of us. Tim is right, trans minorities are being targeted by politicians, and anti-trans propaganda is actually financially backed by Christian conservative think tanks, and the Kreml, to name a few of the main sources of financing. In the US, if a trans woman goes to the women's restroom, she could face up to 1 year in prison. This is happening right now. Over 100,000 trans people have had to move from their home state in the US, just because of the relentless persecution of trans people. also, some of my all time favorite comedians are George Carlin and Steven Wright!!! btw, Gervais blocked me on twitter for just saying "gervais might be offended by trans people, but that doesn't make him right". absolute snowflake. oh, and please don't call it "transgenderism" 😕

Tim is off by saying that cancel culture isn't a thing. It's definitely a thing lots of people have been canceled over opinions. Canceled meaning they can no longer make a living doing what they've worked their whole lives to do. Not just performers but also people pushed out of their communities and ultimately pushed into the accepting arms of the right. Often over opinions that would have been seen as left leaning 15 years ago. No one sets the moral standard for everyone else.

giving it a name is the dumb part, because actually all throughout history people have been "cancelling people"-- or rather holding people accountable for things they say, and people are totally in their rights to not like someone based off of an off-white opinion they have. In fact, famously, republicans have been the ones to "cancel" people famously throughout history. Nobody who has been "cancelled" in the modern age has lost their career, and I'd love to hear you think has. You know, maybe R Kelly but he's also literally a rapist and trafficker. If you disagree with someone's cancellation, a good portion of the time these people still have a large following, and people often just forget about whatever it is they did after a certain amount of times. Kanye is wildly successful still even despite him being anti-semetic.... for a lot of these already famous people it's almost impossible to lose a career. Hell, even chris brown is still doing things. We're all evolving as a culture, and that's just how it is, and it's not a bad thing. If someone wants to say something so bad, they can say it, and especially if theyre famous they'll probably still be okay no matter what it is. Hey what about when republicans tried to "cancel" rock bands in the 60s because they were believed to be witchcraft practicers and satanists??? Or are you gonna double standard it like you people usually always do?

I think you can make trans jokes but they should be smart especially if you’re considered the best comedian. Dave Chapelle made a joke that I distinctly remember making in 2005 when I was 15 years old. If you’re considered the goat I don’t know if your specials should have high school jokes from 2005. I like his show, I think killing them softly is one of the best specials ever. But all his new specials are so boring.

Fun interview, minus the serious stuff which I don't fully agree about. But basically what I most love about Tim as a comedian is that watching his crap for basically any length of time is what it would be like to live with baby brothers who never really grow up, in fact badly regress.

I think USA is more resilient to cancel culture but in the UK, a prime example is Graham Linehan (creator of Father Ted), whose career has suffered immeasurably due to his stance on gender ideology.

Note to the host: "transgenderism" is a really weird term, coined by folks meaning to frame this as a political/social agenda as opposed to this being a simple issue of human rights. It's not a good term to use.
@NyimaWongchuk
@NyimaWongchuk 5 месяцев назад
And maybe the best reason to avoid the term is that it can identify you as a right-winger and make you appear to be an unsafe person to trans folks and folks who are looking out for their trans brothers and sisters.

@@NyimaWongchuk Hey! Thanks so much for this. This was actually brought to my attention by someone else and I've taken it on board. @@ryanwantstoknow, thank for sharing the interview! And thank you for understanding that my comment wasn't meant as an attack. This terminology is pushed intensely and well-meaning people like yourself use it with the intention of it being plain, non-political language. I've had many good conversations with folks where I asked them, with curiosity, what that term meant to them and what they think is implied by it. In almost every instance the person thinks for a moment and then says something to the effect of "yeah - it's actually a weird term, isn't is?" Thanks again and keep up the good work!

@@NyimaWongchuk Yeah that all makes total sense to me. And just the idea of it being an "ism" is kinda weird, and wouldn't be applied to other similar topics. I like you challenging this and think the semantics are important around this issue, especially right now!

He's (understandably) not a fan of "didactic, truth-telling comedy". But then he only ever singles out the 'right-wing' comedians who do it. Meanwhile, 'left-wing' comedians are even more notorious for that style of comedy nowadays (see John Oliver, Lilly Singh, feminist comedians, etc etc). 'Left-wing' comedy routines focus entirely on shaming and (self-righteously) 'educating' audiences about 'racism' and 'sexism', which is why people don't find them funny either. It's weird how seemingly one-sided/blind and ideologically driven Tim's perspective is.
@nerdude360
@nerdude360 6 месяцев назад
right wing comedy is the comedy that has always existed, that's why people think its boring and tired (literally conservatism is about conserving the past, so there's pretty much no way to deny this). All of it is the same. Most progressive comedians dont talk about being leftist all the time actually, and if you really think that then I really doubt your generalizations are based in anything more than a fantasy lol. Most comedians-- artists in general are left leaning and it's because art is a progressive thing, it's rooted deeply in progressive ideologies. Most musicians are leftist, and most peoples songs are not political at all (probably your favorite bands are fronted by progressive people), there are several trans musicians who dont talk about being trans at all in their music (ethel cain, jane remover, underscores, etc etc). Just because they are progressive doesn't mean they talk about politically charged things all the time, and most of the time this isn't the case.

I think that describes Tim's comedy more accurately than the examples given. There's no ulterior motive with them. The purpose of their comedy is obvious. They bludgeon the audience with it. On the other hand, there is clearly ulterior motive behind 'An Evening With...' for example. I'd say people have noticed, and they aren't fans of this particular style either, judging by the audience Tim is drawing these days,

IMO the Shapiro grift is getting his audience to think clever debate tactics and rhetorical framing are the same thing as actual substantial discourse that aims to get to a real truth or understanding. (Put another way, getting people to think winning debates and being “right” are the same thing)
