No one thinks twice when a carpenter has a bunch of different tools for cutting and they're just cutting wood, but for some reason as crafters we expect one tool to do everything with a bunch of different media.
Creatives need ALLLLLLLLLL of the tools, gadgets, goodies, and things. One is none and two is one so go get those backups and options! I recently unpacked a vintage box of scrapbooking goodies I have had two decades and the thrill of getting back into those techniques and supplies is so much fun. Unfortunately, I have a thousand hobbies and my basement is unimaginably cluttered. I’ve been doing a tracing paper sketch of different layouts for my downstairs basement dream craft room so hopefully I’ll be able to clean it out and make it functional soon.
I bought the rotary cutter, tried it, didn't like it because I got a ragged edge, put it on the bottom shelf. After watching this video I feel terrible--the poor rotary cutter didn't stand a chance to be successful because the operator (me) didn't watch a Tim Holtz video to see how to position my hand, now I'm excited to try it again. At the 22:29 mark you mentioned that folks were complaining because they couldn't see the cutting channel--I thought the same thing, but I think we thought that because we've never had the luxury of sliding the blade up and out of the way so we can see where it's going to cut because doing so actually cut the paper when you moved it--because no precision cutter has ever had a spring-loaded paper holder (at least none that I know of) that would allow such an action. Not only does it let us do that, it absolutely speeds the process of cutting because we won't have to lift the end up to slide the paper under. Wow. And the last thing I've learned is this: Whenever I want to know how to use a Tim Holtz product I will look for a Tim Holtz RU-vid demonstration of it to make sure I get thorough instructions on its use. Thank you so much!
Tim, no matter how much I've used your trimmers, I always learn something from your videos! Thank you so much for what your do! I Love all your trimmers, but the rotary is my favorite. From a crafter that has been doing this for 50 years, I LOVE all your tools.
The spring ruler guide is genius! (I find it annoying having to lift it up each time too). I’m more of a chopper but I can see this trimmer in my future 😂
I tried to explain to a friend why I needed this new trimmer, and I finally rather rudely said "because it fits what I need and want". Just wish I remembered your "you do you and I'll do me". Love that response with no need to justify why it answers what works for me!
Thank you Tim for the clarification of how to properly cut with the Rotary Trimmer. I was certainly having those issues you mentioned and didn't realize I was doing it wrong all the time.
This is very helpful, thank you! I bought the rotary trimmer last spring and like it a lot. But, as a card maker, I have always liked the swing arm on my old slide trimmer. So, I will be adding the Precision Trimmer to my Christmas list. I'm sooooo looking forward to your Christmas crafting Saturday's coming up. It's my very favorite time of year to make and your Saturday videos are so inspiring, thank you for continuing to do them each year. ❤🎄
I have waited, and waited for this rotary blade trimmer with a clamp to hold the paper in place while I cut (weak wrists and all)... I love you Tim. I can finally "re-home" my cutterpillar and say ALL my cutters are Tim Holtz. Just picked up your rotary trimmer and V-Blade Trimmer over the weekend. Can't wait to receive it. You're the best.
I wish I had known just 5 days sooner. I just opened a new slide trimmer, I was going to sell. I have held onto it for a year. I didn’t like any of my other ones. I do like the new one but I have a separate tool for scoring. Sigh. Your killin’ me Smalls. 😂❤ Thank you for being willing to go out on a limb and do things differently. The steampunk/grunge, crafting community is what it is, because of you. ❤ Luv to you both.
Oh Tim Holtz....I love you as a creator, however the more I get to know you as a person, I adore you!! Keep being you Tim, you can't please everyone and many are just looking to complain. ♥️♥️ This demo was so helpful, I have so many bad habits that I need to correct when using my tools.
I love that you included the swing out rulers on both top and bottom! It feels more secure to me, and covers both preferences of cutting the paper from the top or the bottom! I think this is a brilliant design!
You are just the greatest!!! I missed out on so much info, instruction, & joy all the years I ignored your videos & products, cause I am the opposite of ‘grunge’ crafting. My loss. Now I adjust to my own style & have found you are often my go-to & you never disappoint!
I love all three of my trimmers. Each one is used for a specific job and makes my card making marathons a lot easier. I make cards for Cards for Kindness and cards for Hospitalized Kids and usually do 200 at a time. It sure helps having the proper tools. Thank you.
I love my deckle and mini trimmers. I am needing a new paper trimmer and after seeing this video I have decided on the precision trimmer. Love the new look and that u can slip the paper underneath. Thanks, Tim😀
I love all your designs. I never hesitate once i decide to get your tools because i know the quality and designs are going to be excellent, i know they won’t disappoint. I also enjoy all your videos, i actually listened to this earlier in the day while sewing, even though i couldn’t see what you were talking about. Lol. But i still enjoyed the video because your enthusiasm is infectious, and you make me feel happy. And i also enjoy Mario’s comments and cheerful attitude as he helps you. Now that i see the trimmer, i want one! I like that you can slide the paper under the clear flap, without having to lift the flap. The two springs are a great idea! For quick jobs it won’t take up half the table. I have the trimmer that leaves a deckled edge. Love it! I also love your super long videos. So relaxing, uplifting and full of creative ideas. Thank you for being you. Always a good day when i see a new video is available. And i also appreciate prices that are reasonable. I tend to buy more if i think it is a fair price. Good work you guys.
My daughter calls you the 'talky-guy' yet it is exactly that which I alway really appreciate in your video's. By the end of it we have a clear understanding of what is out there (in this case in the Tim Holtz-Tonic world of cutting tools) and we can each pick the one we love by 'doing-you' or be inspired to try something else. My essential tool is the by far the 6" guillotine, but I could never find precision trimmer that I was happy with. Out came the rotary trimmer and I am still in paper crafting heaven. Having made a vignette card file box out of chip board confirmed the brilliancy of this trimmer to the millimeter. Thank you so much Tim, Mario, Tonic and everyone else who made this line possible. You do you and I am so definitely doing me ! ♥
I LOVE mine! My favorite part is, yes, that I don't have to open the door. I hated that part too, and not to mention, it cuts like butter! LOVE IT! great product😊❤
Bravo! Honesty and integrity are YOUR brand, Tim holtz!… regardless of affiliation. I respect your opinions because you’re not a salesman. You’re a maker.
I really appreciate your lives . Helpful tips on the tools or mediums. Love the creative ideas from all the creators. when part of the presentation as well. Very appreciated!
My trimmer broke and I ordered the Precision one. It will be perfect for me, Thank you for providing perfect things for us! I always feel "at home" listening to you two!
I received the Precision Trimmer for Christmas. It's the perfect addition for me. I need (and love) my Rotary Trimmer for cutting my watercolor paper, cutting card fronts and any other heavier cardstock. I keep it on the other side of my table so I'm forced to get up to use it. (otherwise I could sit for hours 😳) The Precision Trimmer is perfect to my smaller cuts, for cutting out windows and for light weight papers. I love it. I don't think there is one trimmer that will do every job, unless you're specifically doing just one type of craft. Anyhow, I'm getting long winded here to simply say that I love both. Thank you so much for creating them. (I've had many other slide trimmers ... none have worked at great as this one!)❤
Thank you Tim..it was driving me crazy when my card stock was slightly out after using my trimmer. I will now only cut from the middle to the top or bottom. ❤
I love all the thought you put into this. I have all of your trimmers in every size… every single one has a place in my making. I am so thankful you have come out with a trimmer like this one. I always find myself grabbing my Tim Holtz trimmers regardless of their purpose, size, or footprint. All the others end up in my hand me down box. So excited to get this new addition. Every Tim Holtz tool I have is a go-to product in my craft room.
I so agree with you on the frustation of having to lift the ruler everytime. Especially when it locks. I love that you said it doesn’t lock!!!! You Rock thank you!
Your products are the best!! I agree with you completely about flipping that clear piece!! You have solved this problem beautifully!! Woooohoooo! I think the “gentleness” of your scoring feature will help those who accidentally cut through thinner papers on other scoring tools! You have a fabulous way of creating exactly what is missing & much needed in the craft world! I have a strong feeling that with each step of your product creations, when you tweak & make improvements, those end up being the best features of that new product! ❤
This video was so helpful. I went ahead and purchased the 8.5 chopper. I’ve seen so many TY makers use it but now I understand a lot more how to use it.
Really glad I watched this. Thanks for the explanation on the new precision trimmer and a review of the other trimmers. My precision trimmer arrived today so this was great info! Also, a good analogy is a golfer having a bag filled with different clubs. The same club is not used on every hole. It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Thanks for providing us with the tools to choose from!
Thanks so much for sharing the adjustment to the scoring blade for the precision trimmer. I was ready to send mine back because it didn't score deep enough. Now I am definitely keeping it and sending one to my daughter as well.
I’m only 15 minutes into this video and I 100% agree about the carriage and having to pick it up each time… I hate that! This one is already gonna be a must have!!! I love love love the popped up feature!!!! Yay Tim!!!
The rotary trimmer demo was extremely helpful. Thank you, Tim! Your air vent comment had me laughing out loud. You can throw your hands up or use humor. Well played, Tim!😂
This was an excellent tutorial. Thanks so much! I recently bought the Rotary/media trimmer and didn't like it, but now that I know how to use it, by holding the blade correctly, I love it so much more. I have to admit, though, that traditionally I am a slide trimmer user, so the precision trimmer is now on my wish list. I also own the small guillotine and love it for small things. Thanks again to you and Tonic for designing and producing such quality products.
Happy Nov 1st. It’s my 70th birthday, and a Tim Holtz surprise video just made my day!!! I put this on my Christmas list, but I might buy it as a bday gift to myself! Thank you for making my day!
OOPS... missed the live, but watching the replay. I've like everything you've come out with... not all are something I want/need but I like the options, which enables me to get what I want/need. What I like most about it all is that I know if it has "Tim Holtz" on it, it always going to mean great quality, and I can trust it to do whatever it is supposed to do. So, keep doing what you do Tim. Bring it all on... LOVE it all.
Really enjoyed the show, quite honestly, I found that I could have a use for all of them. The downside to this is affordability. I just love the knowledge that you have and are so willing to share with us.
Love this. I like that the blade holder pushes down so you don't have to hold the paper and push down on the clear plastic with your left hand. Other features are great as well. Thanks Tim.
Thank you Tim for this video. It was very valuable not only for the information on each trimmer but the tips you gave on what not to do with each one. Keep bringing us fantastic products.
I'm SO excited to see this trimmer design! I love my Guillotine trimmer for so many things but I do miss the ability to see where I'm cutting for certain projects. And I hate the flip-flop arm too! Love this so much! ❤
Tim, thank you so much for this video!!! Your explanations of each trimmer really clarified things so well for me. N Now I know that, since I definitely am in the need for a new trimmer, I want both your new slide Precision trimmer AND the Guillotine! Yay!!!
Thank you for your honesty. I’m so glad that you covered all of the trimmers. I have the largest guillotine trimmer, but felt like I needed something for smaller cuts. This will help me narrow it down. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for this video. I am in the market for a new trimmer and scorer. I think the Precision will fit my needs. You are a wonderful "Explainer and Chief".
Wow loved this !! And yes I think I need it . Was good to see about mini guillotine trimmer I loved my first so that it finally wore out . I’m now the proud owner of a new one which btw I love the grey black over the red ! I love the tip on cutting tiny st bottom. I have always tended to cut at the top so this was like a wow moment for me on this mini slice and dicer ! I do many times need precise so will be adding this new one to my collection as well. Thanks Tim for all you do for this hobby so many of us love and would be lost without 💕
Genius! That has always bothered me that you have to flip up the blade. This looks amazing. I really appreciate the comparison of the trimmers too. I learned a lot. Looking forward to Saturday too!❤
Never disappoints- Truly appreciate the time you took to explain each trimmer- very informative!! Have a few of them already and looking forward to get the new one!
I totally agree that there isn’t one perfect cutter for everyone and it changes as our projects change. I’ve always been a slide person, but I fell for your small (mid size) chopper and I don’t use any other cutters unless the paper is too big. I get crazy comments on my cutter videos because I demo so many, but it’s because I was searching for the one. 😂🤣 now there might be one more! 😂 I love the little springs that hold up the floppy thing!! 💙💙💙
Not a truer word said "there is not the perfect trimmer" I totally agree with you there Tim. There are definitely times when you need different tools for the job.
Thank you! Thank you! Now I know why my cuts weren't clean on the rotary trimmer. I am looking forward to ordering the precision trimmer. I'm that kind of cutter!
Tim, I ordered this trimmer right away! I've always wanted this type of paper trimmer so thank you so much for creating it. Can't wait to play with it!!!
I have the original TH Tonic Guillotine Trimmer, where the full 12 inch paper fits on a flat top. I love it as my number 1 Guillotine Trimmer with the mini as my number 2.
This was so useful. I am looking to replace my trimmer but still undecided on which one and your detailed discussion of all the pros and cons was really helpful. Thank you.
Omg I think I'm going to need another trimmer! I love the fact that you can slide the paper under the arm. And I totally love my two guillotine trimmers from you. You are a genius.
Thank you for going over all the trimmers! I’ve been crafting since He tor was a pup and never quantified all of those aspects of different trimmers! I’m looking forward to Holiday Hoopla!
Missed your live but am so glad I caught the replay!! Great information. I am looking to get a new trimmer and will definitely be getting the new precision trimmer along with the deckle trimmer. Thank You!!
I am so happy to see you. You made my day. I do have a trimmer & guillotine with your name on it. I bought several sizes of scissors for my daughter who is left handed. TYSM! Tools rule. See you Saturday!
Absolutely love the new trimmer. I finally got a trimmer to cut my sediments. I have your other trimmers but try to cut 1/4 strip with a Gilletin. It's really hard. One of your crafters was cutting a 1/4 strip with the new trimmer and I was sold. Thank you so much for what you do.
I always appreciate your new product demos, Tim, BECAUSE you take the time to say, "If you want to do 'x,' this is not the product for you," at the same time as explaining your purpose in developing it and demoing how to use it. I generally don't like slide trimmers because the blades are a consumable, and instead gravitate to "choppers" (LOL!). I especially appreciate Tonic's guillotine trimmers, because the blades are self sharpening, and therefore the higher cost is worth it IMO. That said, I'm tempted to invest in this new trimmer in addition to my guillotine trimmer due to the cost, ability to also score paper, and the easy method of blade changing (my old slide trimmer from decades ago was frustrating to change)! Maybe I'll also become a convert, like you? ** As to your scoring blade hack, I'd suggest to others who want blade depth options, to buy a replacement blade to "hack" for the deeper score and mark it (or the un-hacked blade) with an enamel dot, permanent marker, etc. since it's so easy to switch between the blades. Voila! Win-win for the user and Tonic! 😉 ** Finally, maybe it's because I only watch long time, trusted RU-vid reviews, but whenever they say "honest review," they do clarify that to mean it's UNPAID/UNSPONSORED. I suppose even a sponsored review might be somewhat critical, but it's well known in the industry that some companies are vehemently opposed to any criticism of their products, so a sponsored video from their content creators is perceived as inherently biased. Therefore, while the "honest" in the title of those I turn to for reviews is either meant to be eye-catching or for algorithmic reasons, they're also signifying that they're not being paid for the review or they purchased the item themselves, which I appreciate. As you say, beyond a paid review, it's all personal opinion. In fact, this "honest review" terminology is specifically used by authors/publishers when they send out ARCs (advanced reader copies). They hope for a positive review, but the only "stipulation" for receiving the ARC is to post A REVIEW--either positive or negative--online. I suppose this might also be true for some craft companies' agreements with content creators, and why they emphasize this particular wording. 🤷♀
Another craft tool for my wish list (aka: must haves…)Your products come from a crafter’s creativity. And that makes them special! You know what works for you. And I think most of us appreciate that. I use my smaller guillotine paper trimmer the most. But have several. The precision trimmer will have a place in my craft room. (I make cards mostly.) And I’m looking forward to it!
I have all your trimmers and I so appreciate the explanation of each. Appreciate your time to do this. Like you said I use different ones for what I want.
Super helpful video!!! Thank you for all the info about the options for the many trimmers available from Tonic and the thought you put into making them all really useful for specific reasons. I am so looking forward to Holiday Hoopla and all the Christmas makes and projects to be shared for the next couple of months!
I just got the precision trimmer. I like it but had to watch the video to find out how to remove the blades. Ha. The score blade is not enough for me as a card maker so I did what you suggested and popped it out of the housing and then just lightly put it back in. Works fine for scoring 120lb cardstock now. Thanks Tim.
My fave go to is still the big Guillotine from TH & Tonic. Actually just ordered a new blade for it too! I’ve had it about 15 years. Thank you for products that last!
Thank you for another excellent video. So much great information. Had no idea the glass mat edge would rough up the edges. I have the media scraper, too. I didn't think I needed the deckle trimmer or the mini-trimmer but I'm re-thinking it. I'm always impressed with the thought and quality you put into all your products. Kudos need to go out to all the companies you design for; Tonic, Ranger, Sizzix, Stampers Anonymous, etc. P.S. The vintage photo trimmer is absolutely awesome.
