“The function of prayer is not to influence God, but rather to change the nature of the one who prays.” - Soren Kierkegaard I have realized that in every dark season of life, through pain and suffering, that’s where I had the deepest encounters with God as a loving, comforting Father. Prayer has helped me realize the love, presence and ultimately will of God. I’ve come to realize that I can’t change the heart of God, but I can rest in the knowledge that God truly knows, cares and understands my pain in the present, and he also sees beyond the temporal and has all my future plans in his hands. It’s amazing how the things I was angry at God with in the present, made so much sense on my journey when I look back.

Very well said. When we suffer we don’t go through it alone. I remember one year I broke my arm. I had 4 surgeries on it. I lost my job during that time. I was at a very low point. It turned out to be a blessing. A got a much better job. I don’t want to go through that again but it brought me to a better place in life. God works ALL things for the good who love Christ Jesus.

@@pj2334 PJ1: Very well said. When we suffer we don’t go through it alone. GW1: Actually some people do go through it alone and others with little company or help. Why do you arrogantly universally generalize your own experience? Show some empathy for the people who are not as lucky as you have been. PJ1: I remember one year I broke my arm. I had 4 surgeries on it. I lost my job during that time. I was at a very low point. GW1: You experienced a severe harm which would never have occurred if God did exist. He would not have allowed it to occur. PJ1: It turned out to be a blessing. A[I] got a much better job. GW1: No, it did not turn out to be a blessing. There was nobody to bless you. God does not exist, and this has been proven. Your own experience supports the conclusion. PJ1: I don’t want to go through that again but it brought me to a better place in life. GW1: I believe that you are contradicting yourself. If the benefit had outweighed the harm, then you would want to go through it again. PJ1: God works ALL things for the good who love Christ Jesus. GW1: Nonsense. God does not exist, and we now know this. But if he did exist, he would not make his own love of you contingent on your love of Jesus. He would love you noncontingently. In addition, when you say “love of Jesus” what you mean is “believe silly nonrational propositions about Jesus” such as 1) he came back to life, and 2) he atoned for all the sins of humanity.

Tim Keller helped my understanding and walk with Jesus, greatly. Interestingly enough, my wife (an artist and mother of eight) was diagnose with pancreatic cancer a bit later than Pastor Keller; she passed on three months earlier. We are still "managing" grief. She left her art, the input into not only her own children but everyone she met, and there were so many. Tim leaves the verbal influence toward all those who listened to him, but we have a copious quantity of videos, talks like this, sermons and his books, so that - whether you are an atheist or a believer, it doesn't matter - "...he being dead yet speaketh..." (I guess it's in Hebrews 11:4.) Sending consolation and comfort to his loved ones. One of God's (humble) greats who will be missed. "I have fought the good fight; I have finished the course. Henseforth is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge shall give me at that day; and not to me only but to all them, also, that love His appearing." (II Timothy 4:7 - 8)

I can't find your most recent response, so I will address it here. PJ: that’s your opinion. GW: And my opinion is correct and yours is incorrect. PJ: You act like you know there if [is] no God... GW: False. I don’t “act like.” I know that God does not exist! I am not pretending. PJ: bc you don’t understand why ppl suffer. GW: False. I know why people suffer. That’s the way the universe works. However, if God did exist, then horrible harms to people would not occur. Why? Because God would not allow them! If you think he would allow them, then present your case for that. PJ: That is not proof that God doesn’t exists. GW: Of course it is! The definitions are sound, the premises are true, and the logic is impeccable per Modus Tolens, and therefore the conclusion must be true. You have identified no error in the argument, and so the conclusion stands - God does not exist. PJ: It just means you don’t understand. GW: False. You don’t understand the argument. If you did, then you would agree with the conclusion. But I am willing to help you understand. Just ask me any question about it. Or pose a challenge to it. PJ: You are being arrogant yourself. GW: My argument is correct, regardless of what you believe about my personality traits. Define “arrogant” and then present your evidence that I have been arrogant in this discussion. I don’t think you can or will do those things. You will either evade the argument or you will start to get mean.

@whittfamily1
@whittfamily1 Год назад
@@aidabarreto9299 AB1: may I ask you Gary, what would it take in your own personal life to maybe even consider that God does exist? GW1: Aida, thanks for your polite question. I have investigated and considered God’s existence for at least 68 years! From age 5 to 19 I believed that God did exist, then from 20 to 68 I believed that God did not exist, and finally during the last 5 years I have come to KNOW that God does not exist. This conclusion has been proven by me and several other persons. GW1: I think that perhaps what you really want to know is what would CONVINCE me that God does in fact exist. The first necessary event would be that somebody would find an error in my best arguments which prove that God does not exist. The second necessary event would be something like the following: “A man or woman claims to be God. This claimant is invited and comes to a high school gymnasium which has been prepared by magicians (ok, include Penn and Teller) and engineers to be “trick proof” to the greatest extent possible. The claimant is asked to and then stands at the center of a circle of observers and four audio-video cameras recording from different angles. I heard tapping and it was my mother with my daughter… That was a miracle that was 54 years ago and it still feels like yesterday.🙏 and I think God every day I was a foster parent for many years, taking care of her children, and I will continue to always do what I can🙏

My personal experience on prayer is to offer sacrifices of praise, which is the highest expression of a life. Regarding may heal us, and He may not. The key thing in prayer is that God has an intention to do something according to His will, and then He reveals His will to us thru the Spirit for us to know His will We then return and echo His will back to Him thru prayer.lastly God will accomplishes His work according to His will. The problem is that people initiate prayer and not God and want God to agree with them! There are verses in the Bible to support this view .Only prayers initiated by Him are of spiritual value, and we need to learn that it is not abt us but about Him.God is faithful to His purpose and He desires that man should be in God's hand. And not the opposite

Swimming against the culture means to rely on grace but also to “Come out from among them..” God has tried to convince Christians that we should not be “unequally yoked with unbelievers”. Even politically. That does not mean that we should not use our American political “rights” to influence and effect those who do not believe. Those who thoroughly believe have been used by Paul to gain “freedom” for example. “Forgiveness” is the point of Jesus’s birth death and resurrection…Christians are to carry that on, by His grace, through the gift of faith, in Christ alone, FOR God’s Glory ALONE. Jesus often said, “it is not my time.” God will “keep you” until His timing is right. You belong to Him, for His Glory. Ask them, if they ever think about where they might go, after death? A true heart change brings you closer to Him through prayer. a good relationship is about heart change, whether the “other person” understands or not.

If I believe by the power of Reason I will disbelieve by the power reason, because reason is the power of my faith, if reason is the power of my faith then I believe in what I see, yet, it is written, blessed are those who believe who have not seen, if I believe because I am born of light for it is the gift of God then I shall never disbelieve, not even by the power of Reason, we forgive others there sins so God will forgive us our sins, and if you do not forgive others there sins then Our Father in heaven will not forgive us our sins, People say if god is good why then is there so much evil in this world, are they talking about the evil that others do or are they talking of the evil they do themselves Also answer me this, is a victim without sin. And furthermore, the Christ did not say I forgive you when he was on the cross, he petitioned to his father and said, father forgive them for they know not what they do, and Steven did not say I forgive you he said, Lord hold not this sin against them, if the wrath of God is upon the son on the cross, why then does the Christ ask his father to forgive them for they know not what they do, unless the wrath of God is upon the world. The Christ says this to appease gods wrath which is upon them otherwise you would have no need to do so, Faith is not praying to God and calling on the name of the Christ, as the Christ said, why did you fear you of no faith, the name of Christ is given to the world which means anyone can call on the name of the Christ, it is not a crime or a sin to do so, if Tim heard the news from the doctor and the doctor said, you are going to die, why then did Tim believe him, would not Tim have said, all things are possible with God I am not going to die because you tell me so, we pray to God because we do not have and we seek to have, this is why so many Christians have no faith, yet why would Tim be concerned of living in the flesh, the flesh counts for nothing, is it not a far greater thing to be with the Christ, so why does he fear death. If job repented then what was his sin.

6For at just the right time, while we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:6-8 Christ didn't wait for us to repent to die for us. Christ asked forgiveness for His killers, before they repented. It's an incorrect statement that Christian God requires repentance before forgiveness. Like Pastor Keller said, we need the repentance to restore the relationship.

How wonderful that you are reading and enjoying the Bible. It is the most profound collection of books. As humans, we naturally tend to try and make God into our image as opposed to worshipping God for who He really is. So this can mean ignoring things we don't relate to, like the very corporate reality of Christian life. The Bible is mostly concerned with how we relate to God and how we relate to others. As you read it more and actively humble yourself to be ready to accept the bits that are hard for you, you will see over and over again how we are called to live lives that show others what God is like and draw them to Him. And if we truly believe that our only hope for eternal life with God is accepting Jesus as our saviour, we become filled with longing for others to be saved too.
@jsharp3165
@jsharp3165 Год назад
Christianity is definitely a historical, tangible, objective belief in addition to being a timeless, spiritual, and subjective faith. The central belief in Christianity is in an historical event - the literal death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus taught that we must obey two overarching commandments: Love God with every aspect of our existence, and love everyone around us as much as we love ourselves. And Jesus said that obedience is proven in visible results: Clothing, feeding, healing, visiting, and in teaching everyone his commands. How we interact with the world and how we make Jesus known to the world through both actions and words (and at what scale), is basically the practical problem of the past two millennia for all thoughtful Christians. Making converts to Jesus by being his literal hands and feet to love them, was the last earthly command he left us with. It's not optional.

If God did exist, then Tim Keller would not have gotten pancreatic cancer. In fact, not only committed Christians like Tim, but nobody would get it. Tim should be grateful to the doctors and scientists who have been able to treat him for his cancer, not to God who does not exist. If Tim is experiencing a much better life after cancer than before it, would he recommend that his friends and family get cancer so that they might experience the same life improvement? How about anybody at all? Tim was told by his doctor that he would die because of his pancreatic cancer, but Tim said that he did not believe he was going to die. Die at all or die of pancreatic cancer? Tim was not clear on this point. He is still being treated for the cancer, and he could still die because of it. Tim is correct about at least one thing - when you realize that your time is limited, then you pay more attention to how you can enjoy your life or make it more meaningful. But there are several ways that can bring you to this realization, not just your own serious illness. Yes, some people say that forgiveness is not a good idea, but this conclusion depends on the kind of forgiveness being considered and when forgiveness is pursued. There are two basic types of forgiveness: 1) Forgiveness is the withholding of or reduction in a just penalty in response to a harmful, immoral, unethical, and/or unlawful behavior by another. In this sense forgiveness is always contradictory to justice. 2) Forgiveness is the setting aside of resentment towards another who has behaved in a harmful, immoral, unethical, and/or unlawful manner. In this latter sense forgiveness may be compatible with justice and helpful if it is invoked AFTER justice has been applied. Tim is correct that people need to forgive AND seek justice, but I think they ought not forgive UNTIL justice is secured. Revenge can be achieved through justice, but it can unfortunately be achieved by a too punitive response. Tim asserts that Christianity is growing, but is it? In some places it is growing, for example in Africa and Asia, but it seems to be declining in Europe, Japan, and even the US. Where birth rates are still too high, Christianity may be growing, but where there are 2 children or below per family, they seem to be declining. Justin implies that Christianity is “a lot better than secular humanism” and he is mistaken. What is so odd is that Christians with cancer want to pray to a hypothetical being, i.e. God, who if he existed, would have prevented the cancer from which they suffer. How does that make any sense? Tim believes in a “cumulative case” for the existence of God, and this sounds impressive until you realize that each piece in his case is inconclusive and worthy of doubt. And so, 0 + 0 + 0...etc. still adds up to 0. If God did exist, each time he revealed himself would in itself be conclusive. Why? Because he would reveal himself in a current, frequent or regular, clear, unequivocal, universal, and objective manner. This has never happened. And thus, God does not exist! Tim says that we are both a body and a soul. There is no good evidence that souls even exist! Tim says that God knows how we feel. This is nonsense. If God did exist and he knew how we feel when we suffer great harms, he would prevent those harms from occurring. Tim thinks God wasn’t very critical of Job at the end of the book of Job, but this is just mistaken. God was condescending towards Job, essentially saying”Who are you? How dare you question me, the creator of the world!” If he did exist, God would never have said anything like this. In fact, God would not have given Job over to the power of Satan. The story is a bust. If God did exist, praying for healing from cancer would never be needed because God would have prevented cancer in the first place. That’s what an all-powerful and perfectly moral person would do. There is no good evidence that praying for healing from cancer by God works. Dan Barker has said “Nothing fails like prayer” and he is right. I agree with Tim when he says for a reconciled relationship the offender must repent to you.
