I have listened to this a whole bunch of times and it still blows me away. An incredible performance. R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio and MASSIVE respect to Tim Owens for this.
Damn it .... very haunting version . I can't watch this without getting chills . Had the pleasure of meeting RJD years ago. We talked for a couple hours one on one and I can tell you he was just a great human being . \m/
I was there when he did this version. I think it was his first time doing it this way. I told him since Dio's widow is his manager, he should see if she'd let him record this AWESOME, ethereal rendition of one of Dio's best songs.
Owens performed at soulful rendition of this song indeed ... Those who disagree are most likely just diehard fans of Dio ! I love Dio as well but this was an inspiring tribute!
I'm sick of people ripping on the ripper. He's the current heavyweight champ of metal singers. No argument will convince me otherwise. He's his own man--regardless of all the people he covers. All these "singers" get on here and criticize his voice, as if they have a chance in hell to hold a candle to him. He has his own style, big ass ballsy voice, and is a cool guy to boot. No more haterz.
Best cover ever! the Ripper should do a studio acoustic version with Dio Disciples Is there a complete version of the video anywhere? Rest in Peace Great Dio
interesting covermore accoustic i ' d say. The "Ripper" does a descent job, though nobody can come close to the Metal-Master,the one,the only,Ronnie James Dio \m/ R.I.P. Keep on rockin' RIPPER!!!
These shows Ripper did at his resteraunt make me so jealous! The set list was just insane! Also, why has he never performed what is arguably his opus "Cathedral Spires" live?
Well, he's going to perform "Cathedral Spires" on his European tour this summer/early autumn. I believe he has done it before, but there's no video to prove it.
I think most of the criticism about him are about his look... Doesn't matter to me. He did an awesome cover of King Diamond's Abigail (with Roadrunner United, but this cover was a great moment.). He does have a great voice.
but I saw a video of Ripper doing it justice in his new band Dio Disciples where the band is playing it like it's supposed to be played, it doesn't hurt to have Craig Goldie on guitar either, lol
DIO filled Ozzy shoes to a perfect fit. I find myself listening to both versions of BS equally. Tim Ripper nails it every time he is behind the mic! By the way WTF with the jibber jabber in the background !?
Love Halford...but Im pretty sick of people rippin on tim. Halford quit. Period. Tim was asked to step in. Could they have done the best of judas priest concerts , yes, did they? No...they wrote material, they put out albums, they toured promoting them. Still to this day love Cathedral Spires. Is he my favorite singer? No, but he did priest and their fans proud...this song? Not his greatest, the falsetto at the end was killer though. But jesus he aint RJD, nobody is...
stuckie Well-Said...I wasn't ripping on Tim at all...That's an impossible position to be put into...I have endless respect for him actually having the balls to get up there with Priest sans Rob Halford...he did amazing, I'm a musician myself, I've played guitar since I was 2 years-old, following in the footsteps of my dad...but in 1995 when I was 10 years-old, my dad hurt his back lifting something & his playing hand went numb... & early-on, the band he was working with at the time was looking at me to fill his shoes & my dad was like "Lets be realistic here, he's 10 years-old, the only way he's allowed in 95% of the places we've EVER played during the show, is if he's sitting with his mom..." He's still alive, & still playing guitar, I'm 29 years-old as I sit here typing this...& I do step in with him & play with his band these days...but it's a similar situation...people who go there to see my dad, if they show up while I'm playing a lead, their first response is "WHO THE HELL IS THIS ASSHOLE?!? ...Where's Mark?!?" & lucky for me, my dad & I have the same first & last name (different middle name so there's no "Jr." or "the 3rd" or any of that stuff...LOL)
@azimuth361 DIO is not able to use Vibrato correctly. He hides that using head voice with a tiny amount of falsetto. The longest vocal DIO has been able to use Vibrato was about 2 seconds until the head voice replaced the entire vocal..
I'm sorry that's just.. omgs.. I think I lasted thirty seconds before my ears slammed shut. I'm off to go listen to how this song is SUPPOSE to be done. By the MAN HIMSELF! \m/DIO FOREVER!!!\m/
@stovnergutt ?!?!?!? I'm listening to Catch the Rainbow as I type this. Sorry, I can't agree with you. Have you listened to Lonely is the Word? The Last In Line? Rainbow Eyes? Dio's vibrato is more subtle. He also doesn't use it on EVERY sustain in the manner of Ripper.
Tim "Ripper" Owens...This is the guy that inspired Mark Wahlberg's Character Chris "Izzy" Cole in the 2001 movie Rock Star... They found Tim Ripper Owens in a Cover band for Judas Priest when Rob Halford left or was kicked outta... The Ironic thing about Tim "Ripper" Owens covering Dio.... Ronnie James Dio was brought into Black Sabbath when Ozzy Departed under similar circumstances... & Dio went in for OZZY!!! There's no harder Singer to Replace
I just wish he had used more instruments along with that acoustic guitar......like some ambient feel with keys and mild percussion would have made this a classic in its own regards!!!
Rob cant sing? Saw them on their last date of the epitah and everyone their said he has never been more on fire. One dude said he sounded better then rather than back in 87
Ripper does the best Covers of all of the great metal songs but he can't do his own stuff to save his neck. Having said that, I think he could make a name for himself doing covers of the great metal songs in a cover cd. He does Rob Halford great as well as Dio. I bethe could do some great Led Zep as well.
Sorry, I really don't like this version. Guitar playing and singing doesn't figure and I also don't like this singing here. Sure not bad, anyway I don't like. But Dio's version is a killer!
