Just finished watching your VID and reminded me of this nice Transfer dual transfer case Tacoma ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kYWyJoV2o6U.html
You should see mine 88' 4runner I got over 30k into ARB F/R, twin compressor ARB, has original 88' motor with 102k miles was 22re now 22r/Lp, blue, zero rust, zero dents, was automatic, all 1981 Hilux running gear 5 speed, 81' housing f/r, on board air, viking Lp tanks, Maxxis 35x12.50x 15" Trepador bias, Coyote bead locks, dual tcase from TG, Marlin everything else, triple sticks, TG HD 5" springs f/r, Blisteins 15" hand built mounts, 5.29 axles gears, e brake driveline brake, Marlin seals, gears, etc.. list goes and goes.. I'm in Washington state..
The steering box is mounted forward to allow the front axle to be moved forward without the tierod and drag link hitting eachother. Looks like the axle was moved about 2 inches forward, and definitely has AMAZING approach angle!
It's what inspired me too. I liked them too when I was younger. The 84 model came out when I was 1 year out of high school. I already owned a 68 Ford Bronco at the time. When I was looking for a more dependable vehicle, I got a Honda Accord but wish I would have paid more to get myself a 4runner. When I was looking to buy a 4runner around 7 years ago, I first looked at 1st Gens. I ended up getting a 3rd Gen instead due to wanting more power from the 3.4 liter V6. The 22RE lacks power but it's perfectly fine for a rig you plan on just playing with in the mountains.
Congrats on the new addition, Tim! Looks like it will be a lot of fun! Also, congratulations to the 1st Gen 4Runner community. Tim is a wealth of knowledge and he and Sean make some amazing DIY videos. We’ve been spoiled having him in the 3rd Gen community.
You know, jobs for 1at Gens are pretty well documented. I'm going to service the front axle pretty soon, but since there's several videos already out that I've found very well done, I'm not going to bother filming it because I don't think I can improve upon what's already out there. I have a feeling I won't be doing too many videos regarding this rig other than showing it in action on some wheeling trips.
I have an 86 4 runner being built at this time and ur video made reminded me exactly why I'm building it .!!! Nice rig.!!! Can't wait to get mine done 🛻
Have fun with it Jared. I've wheeled mine a couple times so far but nothing too crazy yet. I found out the guy I bought it from didn't build the rear bumper right and I need to get it fixed. The support poles for the swing-outs weren't welded right and my 37 inch rear tire could have ripped off if I hadn't noticed that my bumper was starting to crack. If that tire would have come off on the road, it could have killed someone. The guy who owned the rig before me was sort of an idiot. I keep finding things he messed up.
Great purchase Tim! That truck would be a total unicorn up here in the Pacific Northwest. So clean man. Those dents add character. Add a few more so that other guys dents aren't the only stories to be told. You and Sean should add a few wheeling videos to the channel. I know all us viewers would be drooling over that footage. Thanks for the quality content Timmy!
Very nice!!! Look forward to your videos on maintenance and upgrades. I always learn a lot from them. I've been watching your 3rd gen 4runner videos as I have one also but guess what... picking up my '85 1st gen 4runner tomorrow. 😁
Great Scott!! Marty Mcfly aint got nothing on that brodozer, great score man! Anyone who loves 4runners would be a liar to say they aren't a little jealous. Awesome..
I always wanted one so I finally decided to get one. I thought about finding a clean stock rig and then building it up myself but decided I would dump way more money into a rig building it myself. So, with a little work, I'll be able to have some fun wheeling this rig right away.
I''m a subscriber for the 4x4 info alone... but I didn't become an actual superfan until I heard his musings on Idiocracy, I couldn't agree more about the direction we're headed. I drink a BRAWNDO! in your honour, sir.
Thanks for being a subscriber and appreciating things like the idiocracy references we throw into our videos. Happy Wrenching Brother! Not Sure for President!
@@threestarsandasling You're welcome. I reckon you're a fellow bicycle riding enthusiast. My life outside of work was mainly bicycle riding and racing for many many years. I've been a big time cyclist since 1985 but I started riding when I was a kid and used them for transportation and to deliver papers up to 1981. So, I guess you can say I've been cycling most of my life. It's weird for me to blow of bike rides to wrench on trucks but changing it up now and then is a good thing.
@@TimmyTheToolman Yes I am! I love bicycles and would race XC and Enduro (thats why I moved to the PNW) but then a snow storm got me into wrenching & loving my 4runner because i vowed to never get stuck in the parking lot and sleep at work with my mazda 3 again. lol. Thanks for replying on IG for my query about the refrigerant!👍
Timmy The Toolman it’s a blast! I bought a 1991 extended cab 22re pickup, locked front and rear, with 5.29s and 35s for $4,500 8 months, I also have a 1998 4runner on 33s with rear elocker, and the pickup is a BLAST! I’m currently daily driving it instead of my 4runner because it’s so fun!
You have to make it to one of our next parties. We have them 2-3 times a year. California is getting more looney toons everyday. Now us tax payers fund heath care for illegal immigrants. ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS! The absurdity of this is mind boggling. I love California for the weather and the outdoor adventures it offers but I don't like the political majority's lack of common sense and idiocy us conservative folks have to endure.
12k. The condition of the body wasn't a big concern because I know there's a very good chance I could damage the body as well during my wheeling exploits. I could get an 85 4runner with a perfect body and interior for probably 8-10k in California. After doing all the fabrication work, installing dual cases, re-gearing and installing lockers, installing roll bar, winch, rear bumper, on-board air, wheels, tires, etc, etc, I'd probably be into the rig for 20+k. For 12k, I get a rig that's ready for some serious rock crawling and I didn't have to do any of the work.
Thanks Grey. By the time you find a decent 1st Gen and do all the modifications that have been done to my rig, you could easily be into it for over 20k. This rig isn't perfect but I think it was a fair price and I finally have a built 1st Gen 4runner that I've wanted for quite some time. Life is short and you can't take any money with you so you may as well spend it and enjoy it. Yeah, you are right. New trucks are ridiculously expensive and some classics are even more ridiculous. Have you recently checked the prices for the old FJ40 Lan Cruisers, or worse yet, what people are asking for the old Ford Broncos. RIDICULOUS!!!!
Thanks for the offer Tom but having the motor exposed doesn't bother me. What does bother me is I got a switch for the rear wiper to see if the wiper would turn and I ended up overloading the circuit and all of a sudden none of my power windows worked anymore. It popped the breaker under the dash and luckily I found some information online how to reset it. The switch got super hot and I thought I possibly fried some wires. Obviously something is grounding out but I'm not inclined to put any time into figuring it out. The rear wiper is useless anyway because I can't see anything out the back due to the spare tire and jerry can holders. I was stoked to find out my windows still worked, especially the rear one because you can't open the rear tail gate without opening the window which sucks.
Great video and purchase. How dare someone sell a 4Runner to Timmy The Toolman with inferior radiator hose clamps, unless a different radiator couldn't use the Toy clamps. Have fun. Out of curiosity what type/weight oil are you using to keep it full? Any idea what was in it at time of purchase?
Congrats on the new rig Tim:) Lots of cool mods. My 1st new Toyota was a 1984 pick up. I miss the straight axle front end. I installed lockrite lockers and put over 200k on them and never had a problem. I ran 33x15.50-15 Interco super swampers (bias ply) Rancho 3.5" lift, double shocks and steering stabilizeers. Converted the auto front hubs to Asian Warn manuals. The stock 22re was a good motor. No EFI on mine. A question for you, I noticed the rotors were painted red, were your front disk brakes upgraded? Tundra? I remember not having great braking power with 33's I can't imagine 37"? Thanks and enjoy.
I still don't know for sure what brake calipers and rotors it has on it. The guy who built it thinks he remembers it's the stock calipers and rotors from an 86 4runner. I do know the braking isn't the greatest so I do think it's probably the stock set-up.
That is one clean 1st Gen. Never seen one that clean on Craigslist at least in my area (SoCal). Been following you for some time now. Never knew you were involved with Wildland Fire. I’m sort of in the same field. We should chat sometime. You got a email I can hit you up at?
@@love2hvac That's not too far. I'm not a casino type of person. The times I've been near Las Vegas have been for mountain biking. You're close to that bottom corner of Utah that is awesome for mountain biking. The area around Zion is epic. Maybe we could do some high desert wheeling one day. I'm guessing you have a 3rd Gen. Do you also have a 1st Gen too?
@@TimmyTheToolman I have no intrest in casinos myself. But the hiking and wheeling out here is great. I love Utah, amazing place. So much public land to explore in part of the world. I use an app called us public lands and find BLM places to camp every trip. I have a first gen Tacoma. 1999 TRD limited that your videos have and continue to help me with. Thanks for all you do. Next wheelng trip let me know if I'm available I can meet you. 2 rigs better than 1. I dontbhavebthat awesome front axle set up but I usually keep up.
@@love2hvac Cool, I'll contact you the next time I'm in your area. Here's my email address: mtbitm@sbcglobal.net. Email me and let's exchange cell numbers. If you're willing to travel, I can contact you also for other wheeling trips we do.
