What I dislike about Tim Scott most--If I became successful, surely anyone else can. That ignores so much. I tend to think of schools. Wealthier neighborhoods have better schools.
@mrbusdriversir
@mrbusdriversir Месяц назад
Not to mention that poor minorities have higher numbers of broken families and kids growing up in homes without basic needs. Some have to deal with their parent’s mental health issues and drug addiction. I grew up in one of those homes and I had to struggle and work harder than others to get to the same place. With a 7th grade education and broken I had to compete with others that had a supportive family, a safe home to go to, a meal to eat before going to bed every night, and nothing to worry about but school and have fun with friends. So, no. Just because you could do it doesn’t mean anyone can.

Whew!! You should get a Pulitzer Prize for that statement. What you said is the truth. A lot of Black Americans who've 'made it' look their noses down on the less fortunate in our race. They adopt the false notion that since they made it other Blacks are capable of achieving the same level of success. That these token Blacks fail to realize is they had help. They want to get rid of affirmative action and D.E.I. They fail to realize that most Blacks have qualifications that exceed their white competition. But since the cards are stacked against us we don't have the same opportunities as our white counterparts.

John Coffey's kindness and servility in the face of a system that treats him as a monster for no reason is not a celebration of a character, it is an indictment of the status quo. It should also be seen as an indictment of the protagonist's character; your tears mean NOTHING, prison guards. If you aren't willing to sacrifice anything in return for a man who has given everything, what kind of person are you?

The video talks about the motivations behind these manipulative portrayals of the saviour blacks. White people's conditioned and deeply embedded racist ideology cannot move them along to see the REAL world for what it is. One where their whiteness is not the superior notion they have been wired to believe. So he uses the movies as a easy in and then extends it to the toxicity that plays out in the political realm. The bidders. Like Owens. Like Scott. Who see themselves solely in relation to 'white' and in such a setting their 'learnt' inferiority is kicks in. The only 'success' for them is 'whiteness'. That is tragic. Peychologically, what a lonely place to be.

No. White democrats believe they own black people. They did, after all, own slaves 160 years ago. Nothing has changed. They hate a free-thinking black person who refuses to be "owned". So, just as white democrats started the kkk to murder freed slaves they couldn't own, they attack those they can't own now. The worst part is they have convinced black democrats who they "own" to attack them. They do this to keep the ones they "own" from wanting to be free. Tim Scott and Candace Owens are free, living their free lives. Candace Owens is brilliant and one of my favorite people. If she ever decides to run for anything she has my vote on lock. You should let them be free. Republicans don't own people, they free them. We never have owned people. We have never wanted to. Take care.

Agree with The Green Mille allegory. Leave the matrix out of this. Morpheus believed that Neo was the key to what remains of humanity to survive and sacrificed himself for that belief, which turned out to be correct. Neo wasn’t racist, and had a respect for Morpheus before they even met. Listened to him blindly from day one. They had a mutual faith in each other. Neo literally dies saving Morpheus.

Fascinating-how you connected the magical negro trope to Tim Scott. I see it. Almost 15-years ago, I did a paper on the trope’s presence in the 2008 film - The Secret Life of Bees. I am a film fanatic, however, prior to that I had not realized how prominent the use of that theme was. From that point on, I could not stop talking about it. Well done. Keep doing what you do.

This trope has existed since Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin. Malcolm X spoke on the same trope many times. I'm white from rural Middle Tennessee, trust me Tim racism is quite alive here. The south is only 60 years removed from Jim Crow and Black Code, meaning there are both black and white people still alive that know it not as history but as a daily reality.

Jesse Dollemore sent me - I really like your channel. It's a real eye opener and I'm now a subscriber. Thank you. With the utmost respect, I have to say that while the film of The Green Mile maybe used the "magical negro" trope, it missed the entire point of the book. John Coffee was torn up by his gift. He was truly a tortured soul and he wanted to die - he wanted release from his "gift". It didn't matter what color John Coffee's skin was; the story was about how what so many people would have thought was a blessing was, in fact, a curse. Paul Edgecomb (the Tom Hanks character) was going to work to get Coffee released and Coffee wouldn't let him, begged him not to. I only watched the movie once because it really annoyed me (as so many movies from Stephen King's books do) so I don't recall if they followed this part of the story or not, but taking the disease of the warden's wife into his body ... that wasn't Coffee being magical or altruistic... Coffee was getting himself a murder weapon that he then took back to the green mile and used it to kill the guy who had really killed those little girls. Edgecomb wasn't the hero of the book, Coffee was. It's a common theme with Stephen King, to use frequently marginalized people as heros. Sorry for the long post. 😏

I watched your interviews with black conservatives. Very well done. I am not a black conservative, but one person I think you might want to have a conversation with is Michael Steele. I think he could give up interesting perspective of what his views on and his disappointment in his current party. He is a strong support of the Lincoln project. I think you can get a great perspective from him.

I think the thing with Magical Negro characters is that they aren't trying to be offensive, they're usually actually trying to be the opposite. Generally written by a white author as a simplistic example of how black people are good and racism is bad, very similar to the Noble Savage trope. And like that trope, it ends up being offensive because it flattens the characters into simple-minded caricatures and celebrates their merits on the basis their ability and willingness to provide help to the white protagonist who they usually have no real relationship to.

Since when did one's personal success refute the reality of systemic, racial discrimination in America? So, is Tim Scott basically saying: "I don't suffer from cancer, therefore there's no cancer in the world?" Embarrassing!

Why is he suppose to be a Democrat and "toe the line"? As the presenter said he is entitled to his thoughts. His choice does not make him immune from critique, and just because he chose a "line" doesn't make it automatically great.

When I hear politicians talk about corporate tax breaks, I think sellout. When I heard black republican politicians talk corporate tax breaks, I REALLY think sellout. Because you know damn well that money never has and never will get back to the poor community

Although I don't blame these black actors for taking these financially lucrative roles... l absolutely hate movies where we sacrifice our lives to save white people lives as if that is the noble thing to do. I was not very happy about how Roland Kelly's choose to die in the movie "Freddy vs Jason". And I was extremely disappointed in the way that Morgan Freeman's character volunteerly gave his life in the movie "Red 2", so that Bruce Willis and the rest of his white friends could escape and continue to live. And I have absolutely no respect at all for Tim Scott and others like him.

Many years ago I was in the company of a very unpleasant East European fellow who was going on a tirade about gays, blacks, immigrants, Jews …and at that point he stopped and said “but not you.” At that point I had to decide if I was gonna let bygones be bygones. Tim Scott has to make those calls every day.

From David A. Wood: Hello again, fellow RU-vidrs! David from Kettering, Ohio is back here. I just want to thank Mr. Garrison Hayes for his alternately entertaining/informative show about "The Magical Negro" trope.Thank you very much, Mr. Hayes, and I am very sorry that I did not mention your name in my previous text. Thanks again and I am sorry for my unintended omission! Goodbye for now and have yourselves a nice Thursday evening (April 11, 2024). Peace Out from Kettering, Ohio for sure this time! ☮️🇺🇸😃👍

Nicely done. Analysis rather than simple accusation. Thank you for examining an actual policy (the tried and true "opportunity zone" hustle) to show real time harm caused by conservative slight of hand. The transition from examining the archetype to applying it to Scott was smooth but incomplete. What harm is he absorbing on behalf of his white benefactors? How does the trope manifest in Scott's career? How is he being used on behalf of white interests? The answers are implied and frankly well understood by most black people but a little more could be done to make the connect between type and anti-type tight. Great presentation, thought provoking. Thank you.

Great notes! Like I said, this is really a starting point. I certainly agree that muchhh more can be said. Especially by way of demonstrating Scott’s role of “ingesting” the poison/disease on behalf of the GOP; which, in my view, is an apathy toward poor people. I mostly felt the need to finally get this video out sooner than later. More to come! Thanks for the constructive crit

Thank you for this video. I'm white, middle aged, southern, living in Texas. "The magical negro" concept is spot on. I have maintained blindness of this, never actually considering the concept/character. I believe a similar concept can be applied to tribal people throughout the Americas. You may have read Sherman Alexie. It came to my mind that this magical character might have roots in minstrel shows. My mind is now a whirlwind of thoughts of what I have blindly accepted that actually was this sort of character. I really appreciate your knowledge & humane logic.
