This episode is a behind-the-scenes look at the "Log Cabin on a Budget" (LCB) series. We temporarily stepped away from the build site to fell some poplars. We will return in the spring to gather up the logs and process them into floorboards for the cabin, using our portable sawmill.

Oh,yeah! A hard days work and watching the campfire? Truly relaxing. Maybe a little dinner of trout?Pancake mix works well.Hot dogs if you can't fish. The snow makes the forest serene,blocking the noise of the highway. I found a few flashlights that I depend on and it's on my belt ALL of the time. Even when I vacation is Las Vegas.It goes through the TSA,easily. No more Mag lights.I bought 6 different ones and narrowed it down to ONE.I wear the switches out.

I think winter is the best time for felling trees. I'm in north western Montana and prefer to fell trees in the bitter sub zero temps. Keeps me warm, but mostly it's just easier to process logs.

Here's a suggestion, when you're able to you should incorporate a "Rocket Mass Heater" to the log cabin. If you look it up you can find it is a very cost effective source of heat, you only have to burn very small amount of wood. You can either buy one or make one, either way there are pleasing results. Anyways it is just a suggestion, thank you if you have came across this comment and taken time to read it.

I think Rocket mass heaters are pretty neat devices. I haven't researched them in detail yet, but I certainly plan to before I install a heat source in my cabin. Thanks for commenting!

the poplar should be de barked , will speed up it winter drying processes for summer milling and use,,, they have a high moisture content, and can even grow new branches in spring on cut logs, due to their wax resin in their bark that holds in moisture, will also help the cut boards from warping,cupping, checking ,ect,,, most old barns roof planking, lofts planking, and horse stalls were made with seasoned poplar,(or pealed poplar logs) ,,,, cutting in to cants would do the same effect, but would be hard to get the mill in there,,, unless you bring them out on the snow to the mill , ,,,, ps great wood for cabinets, tables, counters, shelves ect ,,,, white with a tint of olive green when aged, and takes paint well when fully dries , , another great video

@TheOutsiderCabin 7 лет назад
Great advice Chris! If I can get the poplars to the sawmill over the snow, I will likely try to debark them. In the spring and summer, I like to drag the logs to the sawmill with the bark still on. That way the bark gets muddy instead, of the actual timber.

You've probably been told this before by someone, and at this time it's a little late in the game to say it but it's still something to have in mind regardless. When felling trees, especially ones in thicket areas or in highly snag prone locations, do all you can to not stand in line with the tree if it hangs up in branches and still is on the stump from which it was cut. While it may be hung good, there is a chance the branches holding it could suddenly break and the tree slip back. It may come shooting off that stump back towards you like it was on a ramp and easily reach ten to twenty feet depending on the length of he tree and how it is hung up. Such a snag is also called a widowmaker, much like limbs that get broken off in high branches but don't fall right away. Some of those branches can stay hanging for days, weeks, months even years and then suddenly, a little shake from the wind and it drops like a falling spear.

How do you like working in the snow? I guess it's better than bug season.
@TheOutsiderCabin
@TheOutsiderCabin 7 лет назад
I've grown to love working in the snow. The undergrowth is covered by a thick blanket of snow, so it's much easier to move through the bush. However if the snow is deep and fluffy, it's almost impossible to move anywhere without a proper pair of snowshoes. You're right about not having to worry about bugs. That's another huge plus. It's also much easier to see through all of the trees, since the leaves are gone. Everything is clean and crisp. The only downside is the cold. It's easier to sit down and relax in the summer, but we can't sit too long in the cold before our fingers and toes start to go numb. Always gotta be moving.

Snow also dampens some of the noise, which can be nice. On a sidenote, bring a leafblower, if you have to clean out a bunch of snow from machinery. The air gets into the nooks and crannies real nice.

Timber.......that's a lot of trees you guys are harvesting. Looks really fun and a lot of hard work. Free wood, you gotta love it. Def better than going and buying wood in a hardware. Dinner turned out pretty good, looked delicious. Why do you cut the trees at an angle first? Take care guys, and keep warm.
@TheOutsiderCabin
@TheOutsiderCabin 7 лет назад
Thanks Andrew! I cut the trees at an angle first to make the "face notch". After I make the back cut, the face notch allows the tree to fall forward in a controlled manner. That's the short answer. lol

Andrew ML If you're not familiar with felling techniques and safety procedures, it's important to seek proper training first. Things can go wrong very quickly, with real potential for serious injury or death. When I first started felling I made some rookie mistakes that could have easily gotten me killed. I'm thankful that a good friend of mine, a logger by trade, took the time to teach me the ropes. I'm so glad that he did.

Just a suggestion when cutting for Lumber you should cut as low on the tree as you can safely so not to waste. fire wood trees not a problem.

Some guys have all the fun! I think Im noticing the wedges make a slightly different sound when the tree is about to fall. Is this correct? I live in northern tropical Australia. I have often wondered how the snow mobile works, what makes it move along? Could you do a video to show those of us who don't live in snow areas plz?

I'd value your opinion/review of the Woodland Mill. Is it all you hoped it would be and would you buy the same mill if you had it to do all over again? I'm still reviewing options but plan to purchase a small mill this summer. Your review would really help.

I know that you are on a budget, however I am curious as to why you opted out of buying an Alaskan Saw Mill instead? I know that you would have saved a boat load of money with it since it is a fraction of the cost in comparison to the one that you bought. Also it is much more mobile since you would be able to use it anywhere. Sorry if I come across as a sales person (which I am not) but I am truly curious since I am a very frugal (and sometimes wise) spender. Thanks for what you do and inspiring people to enjoy what God has created.

I get you're on a tight budget, but there's no way you're on such a tight budget you can't spend 30-50$ for a decent helmet with muffers and a visor, i cringed through the whole video, imagine if a branch happened to fall down, or the one guarantee you have when you run a saw without the helmet: hearing damage.
@zombiefighterof1987
@zombiefighterof1987 7 лет назад
Blue Blood It's not you might get hearing damage, it's you WILL get hearing damage. A blister is nothing especially when compared to a big ass branch hitting you on the head. And when people get in a wreck, they usually have PPE- a safety belt. You're giving poor excuses to be a moron so you don't have to spend the $40 for a helmet. A branch hitting you, going deaf or going blind getting sawdust in your eye can be easily prevented, there's no reason not to.
@zombiefighterof1987
@zombiefighterof1987 7 лет назад
Quit being pathetic, i don't care that you disagree with me. I'm not telling him he needs to get a helmet, i'm giving him friendly advice that could save his hearing, eyesight and even life, i understand you get offended by people disagreeing with you being weak mentally. If you're so soft you can't handle differing opinions then don't post your comments.
