Transporting goods by sea is not merely a formality but an opportunity to share beliefs and spread ideas.
Our mission is to provide wind powered cargo shipping, linking sustainable producers with their markets.
We promote social and ecological sustainability in the shipping industry by being a flagship for change.
Produced by dasFrame and Lewis Muirhead.

This is amazing! One drop on a hot stoned does not make a difference much, but rain starts with that drop ;)

What, only one comment? Can't believe it! Just watched NDR 'Nordstory' and I'm very glad and happy for you to finally see her sail after all those efforts. Congrats and lots of Cargo, fair winds and following seas!

No details about how much profit such a venture could make, no info about available markets. You need to provide a narrative. Who is hauling what, from where to where and are they making money? It's an intriguing idea but is it workable?

Some commentators say more or less: "Giving up their land where they would grow food for their families"? And criticize the production of tropical stuff for people in so-called "rich countries", obviously because the poor people suffer from hunger now, because the Northeners want their drugs "coffee" and "cocoa". Have you ever been there, where they do the coffee and cocoa? Our farmers produce their food (beans, corn, vegetables, fruit, plátanos) AND coffee, cocoa, cinnamon, coco nuts, black pepper, chili, vanilla, cúrcuma, maniok, pejibaye, malanga, quequisque, papaya, some timber, borojó, arazá and more. On one hand they too drink coffee and use nearly all of this stuff themselves, but you won´t believe it: Poor people in so-called poor countries do not just EAT, they need MONEY to buy clothing, to pay the school fees for their kids, to pay the doctor and the medicine, to pay transportation to town, to keep the mules and the horses and the boats, to pay all that stuff you need in a HOUSE and kitchen, to even pay their church and pastor, to buy newspaper (actually non-existent in Nicaragua), to celebrate a wedding and more. It´s MONEY, what they need for all this. Where does this come from? From commerce, from selling parts of the production at the weekly farmers market, to super markets and restaurants in the cities and to people in other countries, who want to buy their produce and pay good prices (organic & fair) voluntarily because of their own health, the farming families´health, the environment of the "poor country". Moreover progressive organic farmers add value, do a lot of processing, fermenting, drying and so non, to get a bigger part out of trading. Look up the page of El Ceibo, Sapecho, Bolivia, to see such an example. Also in "the North" farmers give up their land, where they would grow food for their families, only to feed the useless people in the cities? I cannot touch all the background(s) connected to the activity in a capitalist world, but if one really wants to be better informed, one will find thousands of texts in the internet. Commendable goal, but I think you need to start with designing a ship to be easy to load and unload. You're probably using more labor-hours just to fill the hold than is used to load a dozen shipping containers onto a fossil-fuel powered cargo ship. If the point of the ship is to haul cargo, it must be designed appropriately in order to stand a chance of competing with fossil fuel cargo ships.

FAO (formerly the bad ones) say today: YES, organic agriculture can feed the world. Renunciar de nuevas ideas y proyectos ecológicos porque parecen más caro o - al inicio - un poco complicado, es miope. ¿Quieres destruir el planeta porque es más rentable hacerlo?

Why dont you just call it what it is ? You want a huge sailboat for fun but someone else to pay for it. How much coffee can you carry on a 2 mast schooner? 30 tonnes ? 60 tonnes ? Tell me the price that you pay per tonne to captive peasants to supply green beans and what you sell it for in western markets. If there was money in this dont you think everyone would be doing it? Name one other commodity that you can save the world with on your 50 ton schooner. This is a scam.

@@SeaPilgrim68 What about the third world peasant workers who have to give up their best food growing ground to grow an extremely expensive , after roasting, product to indulge westerners. Ask what the purchase price of the raw beans is and what the retail price is per kilogram in Europe. Stop daydreaming.

Roman Dybala ok. So I ask.....However please also tell me your experience and how your point is relevant? Maybe I’m ignorant or maybe you have an axe to grind. That’s ok. Is promoting international commerce via an albeit symbolic effort towards eco shipping a negative activity for the planet? Are communities in third world countries impacted any more than they would be? Or have the Tres Hombres through building relationships and sustainability as a business acumen, changed the outcome. Maybe that is the question? Regards

@@SeaPilgrim68 I only see hypocrisy and self interest. I have no axe to grind. Just see it as self indulgent of the few owners of these vessels pretending they are making some sort of noble effort to help third world subsistence farmers If they were to transport expensive western products or medecines to these subsistence farmers at no or very low cost I would see that as beneficial. The farmers growing coffee for the west are giving up their land where they could be growing food for themselves and their families.I mentioned a few points in my comments. Please tell me how wrong my statements are.My main question would be to ask how the producers benefit. Regards

Roman Dybala ok thanks for your reply. I think maybe our wires are getting crossed. Or my perception of the Cargo by Sail ‘movement’ is inaccurate. Your view seems to be based on the exploitation of peasant workers in third world countries..which is definitely an important world issue. So much so that quite a few first world based collaboratives have created opportunities such as ‘fair trade’ commodities to help the plight of historically abused labour intensive countries etc. However, from the clips I have watched, most if not all, regarding Tres Hombres, none of them have led me to think that their business is based on taking advantage of the unfortunate. Either I have read or seen claim or mention of ‘saving’ the plight of the third world. So I don’t get the hypocrisy that you seem so clear of. For me, the trade aspect is based on creating opportunities for sustainable eco responsive producers towards expanding their trade networks. Companies who may not have the production volume to afford established routes to new markets. This ideology talks to my soul as I have ancestral connections to the ancient Phoenicians who pioneered this type of trade over 2500 years ago. Further, my interests are in line with slow food, reducing carbon footprint, buying locally where possible, eliminating plastics from our oceans, connecting with nature...I could go on. Lastly, even if the motivation of the tres hombres is self satisfying(tell me what you do of any significance that isn’t?, or anyone for that matter..even Mother Teresa had her own selfish motivations) even if the whole venture doesn’t make a dollar, which seems likely on trade alone. They serve an example of the possibility that the sixth biggest polluter on the planet, the shipping industry as a country, can make some simple changes to reduce the burning of the crudest of fossil fuels, by the millions of tonnes per year. And still be profitable and viable. Finally, if you never have, I encourage you to experience a sailing voyage. Taking the helm of a sailing boat alone through the night, crew and cargo under your care, stars to the horizon, moon shining like your best friend, wildlife in abundance. Everything in my life is different, since then. Fair winds 🙏
