TIME made a Gravel Bike - ADHX 45

At last! We can stop pretending the ADHX is a gravel bike and put it firmly in the road bike category. THIS is a gravel bike! 45mm of tyre clearance, reinforced stays, stiff, strong, and very capable.
We are a TIME bikes dealer. These frames were supplied to us on loan. Time did not pay for the video nor have any say in its content. We sell TIME frames because we admire their quality and recommended them with concern.

I don't think they can improve on the standard ADHX, for me that is a perfect bike frame. If they are reading these comments, I just want to say thank you. I think you make the best carbon bikes out there.

Just finished building up my ADHX in Gloss Cobalt today. Haven’t yet taken it out for a spin as it was too late for that. 90-95% asphalt of which some in piss poor condition. Expect the ADHX to be the perfect bike for my use. Few days after ordering my frameset the ADHX45 was announced.. First reaction wasn’t a happy one. But I think I’d make the same choice again today. I like the paint scheme of the ADHX looks much better, think it will age much better. Timeless actually.. 38-40mm tire clearance is enough for me. I was looking at steel and titanium frames for a long time, the ADHX is the only frameset that had me lusting after a carbon frame… Hope it won’t disappoint, but I’m not counting on that..

So, took ik out for a few short test rides. What can I say, the bike feels great. It’s comfortable, steering is direct,precise. The bike feels like it’s glued to the road and is confidence inspiring. It’s also quiet, very quiet. Road bumps etc seem to be absorbed much better. Have to admit, my old road bike is a 2003 Eddy Merckx Team Sc. Totally different to this ADHX - so I’m comparing apples with pears. But I doubt my trusted EM will see much use anytime soon. This ADHX is built up with GRX 2x 11sp Di2, Rotor Aldhu, syntace carbon P6 hiflex seatpost, deda superbox stem and Coefficient RR handlebars. I laced some DT swiss GR531 32H on standard shimano XT and 105 hubs, XT hub works with the 11-34 cassette and has better bracing angles which should give me a little bit stronger wheel at no weight penalty over 105 rear hub. These wheels are very heavy but are meant to be my go-to and bombproof winter wheelset. I’ll be looking at a nice lightweight carbon wheelset later on, but for now this is what it is. I’m around 193cm/85-90kg - so the 27.2mm carbon seatpost gives me a fair amount of compliance. Also the coefficient RR handlebar appears to be a very comfortable handlebar and more comfortable than the Thomson KFC of my EM. 32mm tires vs 25mm tires. It all adds up, and how much of the gains in comfort and compliance are from those components rather than from the ADHX frameset I can only guess. But I can say that the bike feels very, very good. Still early days, but for the moment I think this frameset was the right choice - wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Looking forward to the updated Scylon. I previously owned a Time ZXRS and it was my all time favorite road bike. As for those criticizing the tire clearance on the ADHX 45 it is reasonable to argue a hard tail mountain bike is a better choice if you need 50mm or more of tire clearance. At some point with larger tires the bike becomes an old school drop bar MTB not a gravel bike.

The ADHX 45 definitely has my attention. It ticks many boxes for me, particularly its superb quality and non-proprietary cockpit. I’m pushing 70, and being able to customize the cockpit for more comfort for my arthritic wrists is important. I’ll be test riding one for certain next spring here in North Carolina. One thing I’m leery of, though, is that wishbone seat stay; those aren’t generally renowned for vertical compliance. I’d prefer the method of joining the seat stays lower on the seat tube, creating a lever for seat tube compliance. If the rear end rides rough, though, I can always add a suspension post. What great paint schemes!
@Mapdec

I have a 2016 Fluidity that I absolutely love, but there are two improvements I'd love to see... 1. Tire clearance: I can just barely fit a 28 mm up front and only 25mm at the back. 2. Lack of mounts. I'd love to see a Time bike with more mount options, on the fork and on top and bottom of top tube.

This would be my ideal gravel bike. I'm currently building up a Cannondale SuperX frameset (got for pretty cheap on ebay), and if you took that bike, kept it's more traditional lines and mild geo, took away the weird rear wheel offset and gave it a smidge more tire clearance, you'd arrive at the ADHX 45. It's classy and all the Time carbon wizardry and production quality is very impressive and convincing..but, to my eyes the ADH starts to look a bit dated, compared to other new roadbikes, like new Look 795 blade, or the new Supersix Evo, or Giant Propel (new 795 being my fav of those, but out of my budget) They all follow this aero-front + lightweight/comfy/still-abitaero-back formula. ....maybe the hopefully upcoming new Scylon will get this modern twist. ...and: 30mm tyre clearance please, even for racy bikes. Cheers ✌️

Add me to the list of people who want some kind of external cable routing at the top of headset or entry into the bars. What I what to be able to do is run some extra hose in a loop (like traditional cables) so that I can drop out the fork when traveling and protect it by having it float loosely in the box, wrapped up, in a more compact package. Removing the fork and seatpost is the best way to avoid damage and make your bike easier to carry because a smaller container can be used. I'm not interested in lugging one of those huge bike boxes that fit a tri bike, with the bars installed. If there were an excellent cable operated brake, I'd maybe consider it as well, just for the ease of servicing in the field.

It was the opposite for me. I am building up an ADHX RTP frame. Got it because the ADH felt a bit too limiting with its 28mm tire clearance...esp since we even saw a 30mm in the TdF. So the ADHX felt like more of a modern road frame / good starting point for an all road bike. Before seeing the ADHX 45, I was a bit irked that Time was marketing the ADHX as a gravel bike instead of as a modern road / all frame that it actually was. Now they have changed the marketing and all is well in the world 😂. Felt quite validated with the new release and new marketing

Have the standard version and not kicking myself at all. For me, if I'm running over a 40 mm tire I don't want to be riding that on a gravel bike. But I like chill gravel over chunky. @jonpoon3896
@jonpoon3896 Год назад
@@Velodictorian it definitely depends. I know a handful that bought that original version, but also regularly races gravel here where 42mm is the sweet spot. If I rode a Time bike at Unbound this year, I would’ve ran 40mm tires in the 45 version for the extra room for mud clearance

“Adventure gravel”. Good category name. This has to happen for the North American market. Gravel here 60% apple sized chunks, 20% mud that redefine clearance as the true gap btw frame and tire with the max tire width that the rim ID can handle, and 20% euro “1/8th down” limestone path that turns to cement on the bike, literally, when it’s a wet day. Until Time et al take on Salsa Cutthroat, it’s out of the market.

I love the idea of a perfectly engineered frame inside and outside, with round holes and even finishes on the brake calipers. Let's hope that is real. However, the geometry of the bike seems a bit less thought-out. Looking at the stack/reach figures, it's clear that the stack is aggressive (which is fine!) but against that there is a very short reach...which is odd for a gravel frame. You'd have to run a relatively long stem which is against the gravel philosophy. Also, the clearance between the front wheel and the downtube is very small which is again very strange for a gravel bike. @Mapdec Is there any "science" behind this odd geometry or didn't they pay attention to it?

From Time's perspective, I don't really understand the point of having two virtually identical bikes in the lineup which are only differentiated by their tire clearance. Would they not have been better off to tweak the geometry on the ADHX45 to differentiate it a bit more from the regular ADHX?

Quick question about the weight. When you weighed it at 1,200g did that include frame + fork and all hardware? Not that it matters too much. I've built up a 2023 ADH disc (Chroma Red) and Time painted me a custom decal / finished ADHX more recently - and I totally didn't bother to weigh either frameset! The clearances on the ADH are just too tight for the horrible roads where I live. So it has to be the ADHX from the current range. Cable routing looks challenging for mechanical gears though.
