I grew up in a spotlessly clean house. It seemed effortless for my mother. My friends thought we had a maid. For years I was able to maintain a clean and tidy home. As I have aged and acquired health issues, I seem to have lost my motivation, but you are helping me regain my momentum. Thank you.

I love you Cass! My house is ALWAYS organized, never cluttered and to the people on the outside, it looks clean. Is it deep cleaned? No. Is it spring cleaned? No. But it always looks neat, tidy and clean. I agree with you…it doesn’t take long to do what I call “quick clean” Quick clean is when I use a swiffer duster to dust. Quick clean is when I use a swiffer mop. Deep cleaning is when I use a microfiber cloth and I get it wet. Deep cleaning is when I get my spin mop out and my bucket and I put, Dawn dish soap and pine-sol or Murphy’s oil soap with hot water in the mopping bucket. I have two cats in my house and two other cats on my front porch. My animals do not prevent me from keeping my house clean. If I’m watching a show and I have chores I need to get done in my home, I use the commercials to jump up and get something done. Most commercials are about three minutes long sometimes four minutes, and you would not believe what I can get done and that 3 to 4 minutes of a commercial. You are correct Cass, I am always in shock how quickly I can get tasks done. Are they perfect? No. Are they white glove inspection clean? No. I do deep clean my house a couple of times a year, but I have found that my method of quick cleaning keeps my house, looking organized, clean, and fresh everyday. There is no such thing as perfect and perfectionism can destroy you start where you are and anything that you put a little bit of effort into is good enough. that’s the message I’ve learned to accept in my brain. Is that quick clean is good enough.

Putting away a few pieces of laundry at a time, tidying a few things in the room, wiping clean a few things in the room. It’ll make things easier for future self.

It's easier to keep up than to catch up. TRUTH ! 😮I've been cleaning like this for years. Combine it with putting your stuff away as you go and, you can clean super fast because your space is already tidy. Once a month I'll deep clean and do extras, it does take longer. The rest of the time I'll break it down into bite sized chores. I may not have the satisfaction of my home being clean all over at the same time but it beats cleaning for 4 hours every weekend!

I listened to your last podcast, after I decluttered the heck out of my house. Surfaces are now hot lava as you suggested, cleaned my main livening areas (2beds, 1bath, living room, art room, kitchen and hallway/stairs) done in 30 mins with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. I have an ADHD husband, so house looked like a tornado ran through it before I started. Honestly my best decluttering rule was does it have a home? If no and I don’t need it to stay alive it goes in the bin, done, over, my house is clean 😊 perfectionism can bite me coz I’m happy with my house.

I am so happy because I look out this window every morning as I meditate and it was really dirty. I didn't have to clean all my windows which is the mindset I used to have until I started following you. You are really helping me. Cas, you changed my life with lessons like this. I used to rarely clean (so gross) because I believed it had to be done a certain way (for hours). Since I couldn’t do that, I didn’t do it at all. Now that I’ve decluttered, with your help, I can keep my house clean and I gave myself permission to do an ok job, which you taught me. And doing an ok job has made my house guest-worthy all the time. I don’t want to spend my life clinging to impossible standards and giving up on myself. You inspired me, and continue to inspire me, to care for myself and my home and it’s brought so much joy to my life. Thank you. ❤

Cas, I find you so inspirational and I love the way you keep it real. I always listen to you while I'm cleaning. I'm a single mom to a 15 year old boy, I work 48 hours a week. Work starts at 4 am. and all the responsibilities of home fall on me. To say I'm exhausted is an understatement. I'm definitely guilty of comparing myself to others and beating myself up because other women work and keep a clean house, why can't I? Last month I rented a very large dumpster and cleaned out my garage and 2 sheds. Today, I did a little trash bag therapy and filled 2 trash bags. My house still is not perfect by any means but I'm making progress in baby steps and I owe it all to you! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

The thing that takes the most of your time is the preparation before the real cleaning (decluttering, putting things away in the place their supposed to be, dusting, vacuming) you also have to move some things before you can start cleaning surfaces. When you count these things in your cleaning process, it takes a long time. The procrastination is a strange thing. I so hate vacuming that I spend more time thinking about how much I hate it instead of doing it. I love your Psychology about it, timing a few minutes and once you are doing it you want to do more.

For me what changed the time I spend in one task is to be present in the moment, avoiding any other thought. For example if you are filling the dish washer make sure that you don’t have to walk back to the dinning table because you left a spoon on top.

I don’t move super fast because I break things that way…but I usually break it in half if I’m in a time crunch, so I will empty the bottom and stick the dirty stuff in the bottom to clear my sink and counters. Thank you for your kick butt motivational podcasts. I absolutely love how you push us!

Cass, you are such an inspiration! I sat down to listen to your video, and as soon as you said to get up and do something, I did! I took my iPad to the kitchen and continued to listen (and to watch occasionally) as I loaded the dishwasher and then handwashed the items that don’t go in it. I had everything done before you finished your video! I’m 77 and sometimes think I don’t have the energy to do something; but by reframing the task into manageable portions, I realize that I can accomplish anything I want to do. It doesn’t matter how fast I get it done, just that I get it started. The rest will take care of itself. As you quoted the basic physics principle, an object in motion tends to stay in motion. Thanks again and goodbye for now. I have work to do!

I needed to listen to this today. I've spent the last three years completing my bachelor's degree while working full time and finishing raising my three adult sons (who still live at home). My house as been neglected, but that is changing. I have also stepped up from assistant teacher to lead teacher in the same classroom, so I am working on getting a classroom/office ready as well! The class/office stuff is easier since I am not attached to most of that. Just today I spent 2 hours cleaning, purging, and organizing one cupboard of things (my former boss was not organized and is somewhat of a hoarder). Thankfully I had already organized quite a bit during the pandemic, but there is still soooo much to do. One day at a time. My goal is to take that momentum from the classroom/office into my home and just purge items. I am a crafty person, but there are things that I just don't do anymore and my priorities have changed. Time for that stuff to go. I needed the tough love to just get moving. One habit at a time. I used to use the all or nothing approach and I am changing my tune and doing what I can when I have a few moments. THANK YOU!!!

I learned that timers are the best way to get me to do stuff. I say you’ve got 10 minutes to clean. And when it's done I have to move on. Now I’m consistent (so it’s cleaner than if I had to force myself to do the whole thing) and it no longer has to feel like it needs to be perfect. Win/win.

Laundry: Each person in my home does their own laundry. No separation required. Towels- each person has their own color. I do wash towels together, don't use bleach (to some, gross). Super simplified, super awesome. No one shares towels or uses other people's towels. Bleach is harsh anyway. I use all free and clear. People keep their laundry in their bedroom until they bring it down to wash. I do help them fold it and put it away sometimes.

My mother was a professional housekeeper. What you have described is what she called a "1 2 3" meaning what you do in a bind to make your home appear presentable, when there is not enough time to do an actual cleaning. However, if that approach is all that is ever done, in time, the house will begin to look dull. It is all in priorities. Thanks for sharing your method. Have a good day.

I have a visual board I log into each day. One note on it says "Perfect is the enemy of good." I do the dishes and laundry every day, and tidy about 5 mins (this is perfect for before bed as screen free time). Then throughout the week I clean for about two-20 min sessions. The house is just going to get dirty again, so perfection is incredibly unnecessary. Functional and hygienic is necessary.

I can truly attest to the 1 to 1/2 hour to clean my house. We lived in a small house (1300 sq ft) for 20+ years and it took me FOREVER to clean it. We moved to a larger home 3 years ago. Granted, our new house has better storage, but the main difference is simple. I got rid of so much stuff after joining the TYHB group. Our small house simply could not hold all the stuff we had. Plus, I finally realized we simply didn’t use 3/4’s of it, EVER! Thx for helping me take my house AND time back!!! It has made a HUGE difference in our lives!

In one of your videos some time ago, you said to take short cuts, that it’s ok to cut corners for the sake of the bigger picture of succeeding, that if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing even a crappy job than not doing it at all. …I’ve struggled with perfectionism, and even though by that time I had renounced perfectionism and tried not to live by it, I didn’t know how much that affected my heart and the failure mentality I had related to cleaning and housework. You and Dana taught me that 5 minutes of progress IS a success, rather than only success as a perfectly completed job. Later I wrote on my board “done is better than perfect”. This has made a huge difference in my home, but more importantly, it’s made a huge difference in my heart and in my attitude. I’m not a failure. Thank you!

When I’m cleaning my house and I’m in the zone I’ll get so fixated that I won’t drink, eat, answer my phone or even pee. I think that because of this I can clean a lot quicker than most. Maybe you’re the same, your focus tidying and not stopping for a chat etc. Also I like to think of my to do list as a I GOT IT DONE list, it’s where I go to get the satisfaction of being able to tick. I have a long list of jobs, I’ll do them all tick them off as I go, when I’m feeling rubbish about myself I’ll look at my list and remind myself of how well I’ve done. Once the entire list is done I untick them and repeat the jobs and tick again. Happy cycle

If a task is automatic and takes time "waiting", I would combine those tasks together. - Make ice tea by "sun brew tea" method. Sun dry some mushrooms. Rinse my microgreens. Set out bamboo/charcoal air purifiers in the sun for 1 hour. - Dust/wipe the room down, then shower, toss dirty cleaning rags into the laundry. - While waiting on the laundry, pull out frozen meat and let it defrost in cold water. While meat is defrosting, pre-chop veggies. - After a meal, do the dishes. If you're into gardening, pull weeds, trim back vegetative growth, water plants. Double check on what seeds you can sow at this time of year. Walk around the garden and get that much needed sunshine/vitamin-D/fresh-air. Get that body moving to help with digestion. Also, my sister mentioned that there's a donation pickup happening close by her place this coming Friday. This gave me motivation/time-schedule to declutter things I know I won't use. I'll just hand off a basket of stuff when she comes by to pick up her kids.

Also, I think people forget that if you clean throughout your day every day, doing a big clean of the house is FAST bc you're just filling in the gaps of your daily cleaning. For example, I wipe down my bathroom counter, sink, and toilet almost daily. And I keep a dish brush with dawn in it in the shower, which I use to scrub 1 surface of my shower every time I take a shower. And I dry my bathtub after using it with a clean microfiber mop (so I don't have to get on my hands and knees). The result? "Deep cleaning" my bathroom involves a 2 minute wipe down with a disinfectant, cleaning the inside of my toilet bowl which takes 1 minute, spot cleaning any soap buildup in the bathtub and shower which takes about 5 minutes, and mopping which takes roughly 2 minutes. That's 10 minutes total. For a DEEP CLEAN. Once a week. Easy. Peasy.

I think the biggest thing to remember is that we are all in different seasons, circumstances, etc. We also all have different roles we perform and have different needs and amounts of time we can spend on cleaning our homes. Adapt your cleaning system to work for you and don't worry about what anyone else thinks. From what you say your most important role is as mum to raise your child... If someone complains tell them they can do it for you or to shut up about it. Most parents or people who have looked after a newborm/small child know what you are going through and will give you grace and encouragement. I don't have kids but when I was younger I looked after my God kids while their parents worked and then I worked in childcare looking after 10 or so kids at a time. Please give yourself grace and take a little time to look after yourself. You will be teaching them by modelling it. I'm combining "flylady", "clutterbug" and the adaptive cleaning system from "Sarah McGlory home" into my system to manage my home better. I'm basically house bound from a list of chronic health challenges so I need a custom made system that I can adapt every day to how much time and energy I have. I really like that Sarah McGlory talks about how our capacity to work changes and our system needs to adapt with the changes. I hope your baby sleeps well and gives you time for a nap and time for yourself....sleep when you can, the mess or cleaning will still be there when you wake up. Blessings from South Eastern Australia, Dot

Yes, we all need to get rid of more clutter, but 1 1/2 hours? No way. Maybe I am too particular. Maybe your house was clean in the first place, because of your daily routines. I think you should ask Melissa Maker or Diane in Denmark what they think. Just a thought. I am excited to continue watching this as I haven't been able to stop thinking about it.

I totally agree about the little vacuuming robots. I got mine a month ago. A cheap one (130€) that just randomly moves around. No scanning the room or anything. It really is a game changer. Since then: - my floors are always tidy - it finds dust every day - it motivates me to clean/tidy/declutter alongside quite often - it helps getting rid of my perfectionist mindset when it runs past some speck of dirt multiple times. It will get to it at some point, though. - it might not get into every corner, but my flat looks h**l of a lot better 😃

And vacuum the entire floor. And clean glass/windows and mirrors. That will be good to actually see how much you do when you clean. I will look forward to that podcast. I like watching these. It keeps me motivated.

It will be interesting to see this. I am still decluttering, but I'm not new to thr idea of timing myself, making a list beforehand and making sure Im being efficient when I was working in a kitchen. So maybe I'm just feeling like I should be doing deeper cleaning or something. Either way I would expect a professional to be thorough.

One of the things I think parents forget to teach is breaking down tasks. Starting this when you start working on the kids with chores. What's the first thing you do when making the bed? Where's the vacuum? What toys should we start with putting away first? I don't write a list. I add it to Tasks on Google and if it turns out I don't have time that day, I reschedule it. Almost everything goes at 8 am the next day and I sort it from there. It feels so good to mark it complete!

Time blindness for me = "That should only take me 5 minutes." When I actually start on the project and it takes me 5 minutes to just get going, I loose heart, feel like a failure, and abandon the project for something that will literally only take me 5 minutes. ( Which in my brain should only take about 30 seconds! 🤦 ) A lot of times, just thinking something through to its completion makes me FEEL like I've actually done it, when in reality I know full well I have not yet done it. I think this is the place where the beginning of madness sets in. 😂

I apply Dana K White's container concept to time, and apply it to both "frogs & ice cream". So every day I do these 2 frogs: 15 minutes of daily morning chores and 15 minutes of daily evening chores. I enjoy sewing and knitting, they are my ice cream. Knitting involves counting, so that daily minimum dish of ice cream is off the clock and X number of rows (about a morning news program worth). Sewing is a mininimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of 90 minutes a day. With that I always know where I am in the current flow of creating my me-made wardrobe. We invite company over (ice cream) to give us a deadline for our big monthly chores (frogs). Cas, you have inspired a lot of this---remember your old "dirty thirty?" That would be a great idea to review in a podcast! Thanks! ❤

Thank you - I have learned so much from you! I do the dishes pretty much every night now, and the put them away when the coffee is brewing in the morning. I used to be such a perfectionist, but now I get a kick out of allowing myself to do things “the wrong way” - the point is that they are getting done!

Yes! 5 and 10 minute increments are huge! I found I get alot done like that. Works great for me. Deep cleaning each room happens 1-2 times a year. Just done that, 1 room a day to deep clean. 6 days. So 6 days 2 times a year to deep clean. Keeping everything put in its place is huge too. That’s right, it’s harder to catch up. Keep up🎉 That’s key! Yes, simplify! I love my cozy home. Keeping up❤

I had to laugh because I use the timer on my phone, and I DO KNOW how long it takes me to shower, get dressed, put on make up and get out the door, but it's because I squeeze every minute to enjoy my morning before the rush out the door! lol One day, I'm going to take a long shower! 🤪

I literally just sit down checking things off my list - when I had my coffee I wrote my list: kitchen : trash out 5 min dishes 10 dry and put away 10 min etc - total 1 1/2 hrs - took me longer - as I get sidetracked ( like a Dory : oh what’s that shiny thing lol) had to squeeze laundry in between and so on - still listening to you while heading to bedroom ( which looks like a tornado hit sigh) I had taken out a lot of boxes to sort etc - pillows I get rid off - but for some reason still hang around- sigh My point is to say you points are right on - cause in general I noticed I over estimate- I do this ritual ever weekend- ( with fibromyalgia I have to take rests and some weekends it’s just not in the books 🤷‍♀️)when I have a season where everything is neat and looks tidy - it’s easy to just maintain- until I get to search for something or declutter - I’m a work in progress for sure 😅

Dear Cass, I’m a new subscriber and I have enjoyed watching your videos. I have taken so much value from your tutorials and podcasts. Although I haven’t been formally diagnosed, it has been suggested by my therapist that I have ADHD. In fact I have been Named Have A Chat Jenny, by my friends. I not mention that I relate to being overwhelmed with tasks and as for time it just seems to vanish before me. Your suggestions are brilliant. Movement of any kind doesn’t gather momentum. So from a young 62 year old, thank you ever so much. ❤

My home is mostly ok. So I allow myself to just hang out with you on the couch with a blanket☺. I'm still in my pyjama and it's 9:15 pm😂😂😂😂. I did some paper stuff today which bothered me for weeks. And I'm gonna time washing my dishes and the table (ok it took 11minutes to clean the dishes, 4 to dry and put them away and 1 to clean and dry the surface-> total 16min😉😅and I'm listening to "Happy ever after" by Abby Jimenez, just in case someone needs some romance doing chores) and now I'm taking a bath. Tomorrow is laundry day (I have access to the washing machine once a week) and the laundry is already sorted and ready (there are at least 5 loads🙄😅).

I realized something that truly amazed me and it's basically wht you say - I was recently diagnosed with ADHD and being 67 I have health problems that can prevent me from doing a lot at a time - have been decluttering slowly for the past year and 1/2 - there are days I go thru bouts that I don't do much of anything (always said I was a huge procrastinator - now I realized it was from ADHD) but I live by myself also - well someone was coming over to take me shopping and I knew she would be coming into my house and it needed to be picked up - since I have been decluttering I didn't have to worry about that but I was able to clean kitchen/dining room/living room and vacuum in 1-1/2 hrs (which would have been probably 3 hrs before) and then it hit me what you have been saying - I also have time blindness and didn't think I could do it - but it was amazing!! and I listen to a lot of channels about decluttering/hoarding/etc.... but you are my favorite of all of them and have learned so much - also when I watch you and maybe 1 other channel I get in the mood to do my own house - thank you for all that you do to help others and also inspire me to get off my duff and do my own work!

Absolutely agree with 100% about the breaking it down I reset my bathroom in my kitchen every night and minutes but when you go into someone’s house and they’re Client and they’re paying you to clean their entire house that to me is a deep clean and probably over clean, but I have to move everything wipe everything down wipe all the surfaces clean all the floors clean all the tile in the it just depends on the house. I guess what I’m saying is Deep cleaning the house in an hour and a half but breaking down tasks in minutes wiping down the bathroom is not deep cleaning the bathroom in my opinion but anyway I just wanted to say that I love you. You’re great you’re my fave and I hope commenting on the last podcast didn’t upset u❤❤

Sorting laundry, treating a stain, starting a load: 10 minutes, putting laundry away: 5 minutes, spot-vacuuming whole house: 5 minutes. Grocery shopping, prepping and cooking take the longest time in my house. At least one hour a day.

My ugh WAS vacuuming the stairs for me- I kept telling myself UGH, the cord is going to get caught, the vacuum will fall down the stairs, the sky will fall and then it’s game over- Sista it took me 7 minutes! 😂 I’ve been such a whiner about a 7 minute task!

12:52pm eastern. Hi Cass, New here. I’ll try to be brief. Ummmm…. I’m fine with the declutter/organizing. I have a hard time decluttering body clutter. From today’s video I plan to embrace the time management aspect by …. Starting again with some basic concepts: Plan , show up , and execute. Keeping things simple and remembering to keep in line of sight what is important to succeed . I did see the video about choosing between succeeding and making excuses. Big thumbs up….👍 when I dwell in the details , become overwhelmed and start picking on myself out of personal disappointment it becomes tediously evident I have now forgotten the craft of the nurturing nature. I always appreciate a good giggle. Thanks

My house always looks clean and clutter free bc I've decluttered and minimized so much only keep what we actually will use. Everything has a place with labels, put things back right away and clean as I go, and there's not a lot of things on the counter or table that make it's easy to clean is key. At night, I run my roomba and clean the dish, kitchen and also do a quick feet mop with a rag on the floor 😂. I have all the cleaning supplies easily accessible so I clean the shower when I use deep conditioners. I clean the toilet often thru out the week as needed. When brushing my teeth, I wipe down the mirror and counter, I put things away in my room and vanity before laying on my bed. In the morning, I made my bed and put dishes away before going to work. On Saturday, I'll put a load of laundry, go to the gym then run to the grocery store, put another load of laundry in when I come home, prep and cook for the week. Most of our clothes either hang or row in bins or drawers. Makes it really fast and easy to put away while I'm watching a show, so I got the whole weekend to relax and spend time with my family. Honestly, it doesn't take long to clean the house if you keep up with it daily and not have a lot of stuff lying around and I'll do major decluttering and deep cleaning every few months not every week.

I bought a clothes rack on wheels to use when “folding” clothes. My family has all of their shirts on hangers, so instead of me folding them and giving them to my kids to put on hangers and put in their closets, I put them on the hangers and fold the rest. They come grab the shirts, hang them in their closets then come back and get the rest of their clothes and put them in their bins. Much quicker and I don’t get mad that things aren’t hung up and they are more likely to put them away without grumbling!
@GoingGreenMom
@GoingGreenMom 4 дня назад
My kids helped streamline my laundry too! We hang dry everything, and then I used to fold everything, and eventually my son was like, can I hang my shirts? It took a hot minute to figure out the hanger situation, but I wound up switching us all to hanging shirts. And I hang them on the hangers to dry so they can just go from the drying rod to closets. For awhile I even put a fan in my closet and hung mostly dry clothes in there spread out to finish. 😂 Mind you I have a walk in closet and only use about 18" for my dry clothes, but it has been nice. Lol.
