I'll show you 3 ways to make different applique templates that can all be printed in an inkjet printer: using peel and stick laminate, regular freezer paper, and/or heavyduty freezer paper.
Laminate: pieceocake.com...
Regular freezer paper sheets: pieceocake.com...
Cutright Heavyduty freezer paper: pieceocake.com...
Paper scissors: pieceocake.com...

I also recently starting using the Cut-Rite freezer paper and love it for when I'm using starch to prepare my pieces for machine applique. No-Melt template plastic threatened to bankrupt me and ironing 2-3 pieces of freezer paper together to get a thick enough edge that wouldn't distort was also proving a little pricier and fussier than I wanted. So when I found the Cut-Rite freezer paper and found that just one sheet was needed and that the pieces cut out could be used multiple times without distortion, I was head over heels. I use my Silhouette Portrait to cut out the applique shapes as I am not very accurate with a pair of scissors and can never seem to "split the line" with any degree of real skill. My machine, however, can do it with ease and can easily reverse the patterns as well, leaving me with all the fun bits to do. I really appreciate your videos, Becky. Thank you so much!

Using your machine to perforate the freezer paper is a good idea! I would not have thought of that myself but it makes sense. Well done!

Becky, I enjoyed this very much! I mostly do raw edge machine appliqué on my art quilts. Sometimes I use templates that I create from my own patterns and I always look to you for guidance on template making and use. While watching this it occurred to me that the heavier freezer paper would work well to make a stencil for screen-printing! I can't wait to try it!

Hi, Becky - I have hand appliqued, embroidered, and sewn garments a lot in years past, and now I'm entering the quilting world. Thank you so much for your detailed and thorough instruction! I was just about to buy plastic sheeting, and now I won't, at least not for the purpose of applique! Can you address the issue of finger pressing and then sewing around points, for example the point of this Christmas tree, or the point of a star? I can see that becoming a tricky thing to figure out on my own. Thanks very much.

I have done many, many videos on hand applique techniques. Please do click around on my RU-vid channel and you will find them. I also offer online courses that are full of even more detailed instructions. These classes are not free, but they are very good. Click here to find them: creativespark.ctpub.com/pages/Becky_Goldsmith I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes and happy stitching!

I found this video really informative. Thank you! What's the glue stick that you use?

I'm using the fabric glue stick from Sewline in this video. It is the same glue that you'll find in the Bohin and Fons and Porter glue sticks. The refills for all of them are exactly the same.
