I'm not all smart with tractors. Am only 15 but I like learning new things about anything with wheels. I'm even working on my first truck at the moment. Great video. I like your attitude. Not a lot of people have a nice attitude.

Josh, I have the 5075e which I believe is the same process for the 55,65, and 75 models. You wisely mention to keep a maintenance log. If you look on page 140-1 through 140-6 of your operator's manual, they have maintenance logs all charted out for you to fill in. You can then write notes on the bottoms of the pages for tools and such.

Nice quick video. 2 comments. 1 keep a couple flattened cardboard boxes by your work station. Toss under tractor/truck/car/utv/even mower. Easy clean up, catches spills/dirt/misc, and more comfortable to lie on. 2 - Fram tends to be erratic, and they go into bypass too often/early, and filter media substandard. Use K&N, Wix, Napa Gold for best quality. K&N have a nice weldnut you can use socket on. I use K&N even on my Briggs/Kawasaki/Honda twins/ohc/etc. Jimho ymmv. Max

Hi josh, Thank you for taking the time to post your video and doing so without being a *ic* . I have to say that your “shade tree’ mechanic video are my favorite. In this age of instant gratification and loss of common man (woman) knowledge it is refreshing to see a person doing a basic tune up on their equipment. Two week ago we had my wife’s car in the shop for a decal and as always they found plenty other thing to do on the car which I promptly declined, not without get a full on quote. My son was dubious on why I did not got the work done there. I then proceeded to the nearest auto part store and gathered the needed part. ( a few item needed to be fixed to be fair with that shop). My 3rd trader then spent an hour or two with me wrenching around, swapping air filters , oil changing, wind shield wipers wrestling, before declaring victory ... Once done and said I got him to compare the price of the goods we bought to the shops quote, gave him my hourly wage and got him to figure out how much we saved, and many hour I would have had to work to pay to get it done ... hopefully some first hand math will give him a lifelong lessons .... once all of that was done and said we took the car for a test drive that just happened to pass by the local ice cream shop ... after all we had quite a bit of saved money to spend .... Keep up the great work josh

Tip: Get two permanent markers in your toolbox. One white or silver, another black. Those two contrasting colors, most probably will fit the entire spectrum of needs! It will allow you to mark each and every component for which you need to remember some information. Like when it was changed, etc. A simple date scribed on your filters will save you a lot of head scratching and wondering about when to do maintenance and such! The information is readily available exactly where its needed. ;-) I just recently took advantage of that method. While getting back on track a tractor that had been "abandoned" for the past 2 years... All necessary parts where properly marked with date and any additional information I needed! ;-)

My 5065E is 10 years old now and just hit 500hrs a while back. I did the same thing you just did but also I changed out the front differential oil. The only problem I have had is my starter finally just went out and was easy and cheap to replace. The guy at the starter repair shop said the starters on these tractors are a tad undersized and will wear out faster over time. If you notice it cranking slow even with a hot battery that’s your problem . I also installed several led flood light cubes around the tractor and it lights up the night! I also replaced my factory headlight bulbs with performance led bulbs.

Consider slipping flexible rubber tube or surgical hose over the oil wrench jaws to offer padding for fuel filter collar removal. It grips but won't mar the collar. I use scrap fuel line for my wrench. Being new to tractor ownership, I find all your videos beneficial in the use and upkeep of my JD 3038E. Thanks and keep the videos coming.

Fantastic video mate. I've watched a lot and most people while having a good go just miss the mark if you know what I mean. One thing I noticed with discribing the air filter system the inner is actually a "safety: filter where as if it has dust on it the outer is holed. Other than that great job, especially like the detailed recording of your servicing routines can't be too through there, I wish my clients were as detailed. Keep up the great work.

Even on start up cold. I'm also user of Fram filters there universal for everything I buy them by the case of six with and without grip ....extra guard etc. I would definitely change your outer air filter if you know how much dirt was really in there you would change it. Hey Josh, a quick youtube search for fram vs. wix will get you tons of videos of the problems with fram filters. There is one guy that cuts em open while working at the back of his huge flatbed service truck(thats the only description I can think of for you to find the video).. Other than the cheap components in a fram filter the main complaint most have is how few pleats are in the filter material. This guy went a step futher and unrolled and stretched out the paper filter material,,,Don't recall the measurements but the fram filter has way less material. To answer your question about synthetic oil, yes every single engine I own that called for regular oil and a while later I switched to synthetic, they now have oil leaks (I have no idea why). I have two generators that have never leaked a drop one of them(10 hp) had 200 hours on it and the 16 hp had less than 20. Both started leaking from the main seals after 10-20 hours of running with synthetic. weird. Now, anything that calls for synthetic from OEM (3 polaris wheelers and one ranger) have never leaked a drop. From what I've learned after some extensive research online regarding synthetic, if you service your equipment at the recommended service intervals, you do not need to run synthetic and really you're just wasting money. The main advantage to synthetic is if you want to extend your service intervals...most guys that take care of their equipment just can't bring themselves to do that. lol I switched to synthetic on my old 6.5 turbo diesel and the first thing I noticed was how fast the turbo spooled up but man did she start using oil! I noticed when checking the oil while the engine was warm, the full synthetic dripped off the dipstick like water...that concerned me, but it explained the faster spooling. One thing I do that you might find helpful is every vehicle, tractor or any other equipment I own, under the hood I took a paint pen and wrote socket size/# of quarts for the oil changes - I'm getting too old to crawl under vehicles multiple times lol. I also use an engraver to write on the end of the oil filters (for my tractors). I write hrs. and date. Tried the sharpie route but my filters all face out and after 6 months of working them I couldn't read the sharpie writing. Your's may work fine because the end of your filter is kinda protected. Nice video.

Napa filters are made by wix, Donaldson is another good choice. Can't go wrong with oe filters either, probably better pricing if you buy by the case. Copper washers should also get replaced periodically. Fuel filter is easier to prime if you partially fill beforehand. Napa sells a nice large red funnel, kind of looks like a fireman hat, works really well if using 5 gallon pails of oil, as it has a notch to hold the pail. Regular grease and oil keeps them running forever. By chance does that engine use a coolant filter? If so, good to replace every year or two.

Napa, wix, Carquest. I think Donaldson makes filters for Deere. The synthetic oil causing leaks is not an old wives tale, but it tends to apply to higher mileage or houred engines.

As far as synthetic oil causing leaks it will usually only cause leaks in very old worn-out engines that have only ever used Dino oil due to the fact that Dino oil will plug up any cracked seals with sludge and full synthetic is very good at cleaning that sludge away which in turn causes leaks very early on in the synthetic game when they first came out with synthetic oil many of the companies were having problems with the additive packages in the oil which was actually destroying and eating seals which I think is where the whole don't go to synthetic comes from.

Just a tip my friend. The service intervals are as follows, as per my experience. When using Deere Plus 50 II and a John Deere filter, you can change the oil every 500 hours. When using a different oil than Plus 50 II or a non-Deere filter the interval is 250 hours. Make sure the oil meets the performance specs and viscosities as per the manual. Check your book, this may be invalid. Always go by the book. You can use that air filter up to five times of removal, whether for cleaning or inspection. After being 5 times removed it’s time to go. You did fine, and I think you knew that anyway. Great vid.
