A playthrough of Vic Tokai's 1993 action-platformer for the Super Nintendo, Time Slip.
Time Slip is one of the seemingly lesser known SNES action titles, but that's not to say it's not a game worth considering. In its heart, Time Slip desperately wants to be Contra III: The Alien Wars, and while the game might not be anything original, it pulls off its cloning act well enough to make it worth a look.
The story is typical of any of these types of games: in the immortal words of the SCAT intro on the NES, "You must destroy them! The earth is counting on you. Good luck!" It's interesting, though, that someone apparently had some sort of want to insert high-brow symbolism here given the super hokey names. You play as "Dr. Gilgamesh" who fights invaders from the planet Tiamat. I'm sure a freshman English major could have a field day writing out ten-page paper on the shameless and hamfisted attempts at pretension - somehow even more so once the Spanish Inquisition is tossed into the mix. There's a space probe named the Torquemada - I actually rolled my eyes at that one when I read it.
Ridiculous name dropping aside, Time Slip puts up a pretty good effort. The action is mostly running left-to-right while holding an action button, and is occasionally split up with a horizontally-scrolling shooter stage. Your main gun is upgradable, though it loses power when you're killed, and you get a few selectable bomb and missile items for those particularly annoying enemies. And there is a timer for which I still don't understand the reason, but oh well. Because tropes, I guess.
The graphics are all nice and bright, the time-period themes are a neat way to give each area a distinct look, and the music is generally pretty catchy. The presentation isn't anything extraordinary, but it's well suited to the game.
I liked Time Slip a lot. It's not as good as Contra 3, nor is it anywhere near as difficult, but if you've played that one to death and still want more, this is a pretty enjoyable title. The two share the same sort of relationship I've always felt existed between Ninja Gaiden and Vice: Project Doom, or Coke and Patriot's Choice Cola. They're both cola, and even though one tastes better than the other, they both come in a can and they both make you piss. Same end result, same purpose served.
