A little shootout of six fuzz and distortion circuits using the quintessential Fuzz solo of all time - Time by Pink Floyd - as an example. The original is recorded with a Fuzz Face of course, but here some other variants are checked.
The comparison is made in a way that all pedals see the exact same signal in order to make it more comparable. The video was simultaneously recorded into Garageband and a ditto looper. Subsequently, I just swapped pedals and played the ditto looper into Garageband.
I am playing my Warmoth Black Strat into a HI-TONE 50DG (... actually,. it's Kemper profile for convenience of recording - I can't hear a difference to the mic'ed amp).
Hope you enjoy and don't mind the mistakes too much.

Tube Driver makes my heart beats really fast. It's amazing how this this little expensive box can sound

I actually really liked the 69

Thanks for checking in! The 69 is a very difficult to control pedal. I don't think I brought out the best in it here but for those who want to go down the Germanium Fuzz rabbit hole, it is a very good choice.

Good job man. I followed you over here from Gearpage. I would can the sunset and the mooer.

Jason Fillion thanks man! The Mooer was‘t dialed in right. It is on the board that I use with the band and it sounds great in the mix. I just did not take enough time to set it right here. My fault! The Sunset on the other hand is one of my favorites of the bunch, also here. Great pedal IMHO - but we all hear and feel differently and it is nice ti have do many options these days with great sounding pedals.

the Fulltone is the closest. curious why you didn’t try an actual Fuzz Face?

Fair enough - I just did not have one at the time. I since bought a Dunlop Fuzz Face mini Silicon (the blue one) and together with a Powerbooster, it leaves nothing to desire with respect to the original tone (provided there is a Binson type delay too). The recording is also compromised by buffer issues with the Fulltone coming from the Ditto. I have learned a lot about Impedance from this excersize. All in all, these Fuzz Faces can sound great but they are so finicky that I’d rather look elsewhere for a nice tone. The Dunlop FF mini seems to be less picky though. My playing here is not good and I have learned it better since the recording. Never mind, I hope the tone comparison is still somewhat valid.

For me : fulltone 69. It's real sound. Strymon digital sound. Tube driver...modern David Gilmour sound?

Thank you! Some people have pointed out that the Fulltone 69 sound in that clip was compromised by the buffer in the ditto that was before it in the chain. It is quite finicky with these vintage style fuzz face pedals. The closest to the vintage correct sound is probably by running the Fulltone 69 directly after the guitar into a Colorsound power booster (or clone thereof) set quite dirty and bright into a UniVibe (or clone thereof) into a Binson Echorec (or clone thereof) into a really loud Fender Twin reverb - at least it sounds like a Twin Reverb to me. Modern Gilmour used either a Big Muff or a Tube Driver in various life settings. The Tube Driver in my clip was set too bright (I think). I personally quite like the Strymon but others don't ... fair enough, it is just personal taste after all - it certainly does not sound vintage correct.

The 69 isn’t behaving with the ditto’s buffer in front of it

Michael Lewis I am afraid that that‘s right. We discussed it at length at the Gearpage after I loaded it up there. I made a few tests afterwards and it is indeed correct - the buffer in the ditto is ‚playing‘ with the 69. I eventually concluded that it is a great pedal but is too moody and sensitive to be really usable. Replaced it with a Skreddy Lunar and I am happy with that. Having said that - I did not hate the sound of the 69 in the video ... it is just not exactly how it should sound.
