Time Team Episode Commentary
S14E02: No Place Like Rome (Blacklands, Somerset)
Tim Taylor and Jim Mower look back at another Time Team Classic, using this episode as an example to tick off all the essential components needed to make the show - a great site, banter between the team, specialist experts, geophys, cameos and more. In this case, the team were also joined by rock royalty - Baz Warne of legendary punk band, The Stranglers!

Mick's ability to follow the evidence and peel off theories that the evidence disproved was impressive and a lesson for most of us. If you truly are in pursuit of knowledge the ego must be left behind. ✌

I'd like to see a follow up on the site, what they found since Time Team was there.

Can they publish the cameos in one series? The ones that aired and the ones that didn’t.

Any chance of revealing the all important synthesis process to viewers? The bringing together of all the bits and pieces, to develop the site interpretation? Seems another opportunity to build in interest?

What frustrates me is there is never any mention of what happens after the Time Team have left. Do they just leave big holes in the ground? Does anyone take over and continue the archaeology? Are the findings registered anywhere? It seems to be science done in an unscientific way due to time constraints. It would also be interesting to know what the various experts are normally doing when not making TV programmes.

If you watch all the episodes, they do make reference to trenches after the fact. For homeowners they assure them that the lawn will be put back as it was and they have a device that peels that top layer off. They then dig and cover and place the top layer back on. They do this for all sites. As for unscientific, that is FAR from the case. These digs were done in conjunction with Wessex Archeology (Phil Harding's place of employment), and you can pull up every single published Time Team dig from their archives. They also publish in local archeology journals so that the local archeologists can expand on the work. Finally as for the experts, you can look them up and find where they are at. They are all very highly regarded experts in their fields, and the younger crew has certainly come up on their own!

It was a great series, but sometimes this club of mutual admiration is a bit too much
