Time Team S16-E09 Mystery of the Ice Cream Villa: Colworth, Bedfordshire

The Team are invited to investigate a Bedfordshire field by a group of amateur archaeologists who also just happen to be experts in the science of ice cream! Countless pieces of Roman pottery, coins and building material, suggest this now empty field was once home to a grand Roman villa.

For the people bashing Tony, he is there to act as a go between from the archaeologists to the common viewer. I highly doubt that his attitude at times is genuine, it is to provide the archaeologists a chance to respond to the viewers who may be thinking something similar while watching making the show more accessible. Without Tony's attention to detail in that regard, many people who may otherwise think what archaeologists do is a bunch of guess work and making stuff up out of nothing have a chance to see reasoning behind it. Because archaeologists working in their field go on the assumption that the people they're working with understand all that, but Tony just reminds them to explain it to the people at home and rather than just saying "explain that to the viewers at home" he finds ways of making it entertaining with is attitude.

Good points. Tony is only there to act as a "Chorus" in a Greek play would have, to provide a narrative structure which, because "Time Team" developed into a formula and also had a sense of its own continuity, needed to be kept consistent and even updated, to make it "fresh". It is really rather interesting and even impressive when, in these later series, Tony seems to have the right answers without having a heck of a load of coaching to get him up to speed, because over a decade's worth of observations does make a difference, even if he never picked up a trowel.

On a 'behind the scenes' episode, you hear the director and Tony discussing how to 'wind them up as usual' with lines such as 'call yourself a professional.' Tony clearly enjoyed this part of his job, especially since he had a 20 year relationship with many of these archaeologists. He is quoted as having a great deal of respect for their abilities but he also loved making an entertaining program.

The format could be reintroduced today and it would work just as well as it did in the past. All you need is some new catch phrases, like "The top has to come off" and one goodlooking but not too smart young female archeologist.

What many commentators here don't seem to appreciate the plow damage that occurs to these sites. In America, the earliest structures were either pole buildings or buildings on piers. Once the buildings are gone, plowing removes most all traces of the building. I read a book back in the 1970's about a town built in 1618 and destroyed by 1623 in Virginia. It was found accidently when there was an archeological test of a site for the expansion of a parking lot. They had to scrape all of the topsoil under the tar that was below the plow depth to find the signs of the post molds. What amazes me is that the "Diggers" whomever they are never wear knee protection/pads. Im my plumbing business, we did a lot of digging. I provided knee pads to all of my employees and demanded that they wear them. Which they did. I watch these episodes and get sympathetic pains in my knees just watching them. For less than $15.00, you can buy really comfortable knee pads that don't cut off the circulation on your knees. Plus, they keep your knees warm and toasty in the winter time.
@scarletfluerr

Laurie, I completely agree, Tony binds the programme together and his fake grumpiness and criticism is part of the entertainment and keeps the pace. In addition, you know he is close to the other members of the team because of the constant ribbing and p*ss-taking. Maybe it's a British thing, we may often seem very rude to each other, but it is really a sign of familiarity, respect and good friendship. Let's not forget, this show wouldn't exist unless Tony had driven it from concept to 20 years of reality.

Which Ian? There's Ian Barclay, the older guy who is frequently shown napping in the cab of the digger, and the young, skinny guy who operates the smaller diggers is Ian Powlesland. If you're referring to the latter, he's described as a "field archeologist." He gets paid to do archeology, so he's not an amateur. If you're talking about Barclay, I still wouldn't call him an amateur, as he has participated in so many digs. He can skim off soil by the centimeter (or half-inch in old money).
@KYIRISH1
@KYIRISH1 9 лет назад
On a serious note, the Romans, and even the folks before them, paid attention to what's under their buildings. Those are fantastically solid foundations or what we call footers. I don't know about GB but most houses in the States have been thrown up on the cheap in recent years. Expensive ones too. A lot of bling above ground but the foundations can be very suspect. I recently had to pay several thousand dollars to have structural piers driven down to bedrock to support the lower side of my house. Pitiful, the footers only went down inches in some areas. Before I buy another house I'd like to have Time Team examine what's under it!
@ronaldderooij1774
@ronaldderooij1774 9 лет назад
KYIRISH1 In the Netherlands every building project needs to be approved by the local government. So, solid foundations is really something they will look at before a building permit will be issued. Remember that most of the Netherlands was originally wet thick peat marshes made dry by canals, windmills, dieselpumps and what have you. You need build everything on 10-20 meter long poles or on massive, massive foundations. If I dig a hole in my garden less than 1m deep, I hit marsh and can stick a 20m long pole in it with no effort at all before hitting the sand deposited in the last ice age. Good foundations guaranteed.....20 meters under the top soil.....

It is very much a communal activity digging for history in the UK. This is a tv show designed to follow programming practices used in the industry; the producers avoid hyperbole and only submit the clips required to produce a 1h program out of >24h of film. They are basically cherry-picking the best and most promising sites from those local groups and individuals who are already working their home areas.

But what Tony and his team are showing us is how archaeology really works - or sometimes just doesn't. If the team had weeks on end to excavate the whole field, they would inevitably make some incredible finds, but in just three days the experts have to estimate quickly where to put trenches based on the Geophysics etc., and hope for the best. 😋

Burning but not enough for a kiln means a brewery to me. Malting floors often burned down. That would explain all the money year on year in a place where one does not expect a villa. It is industry, production of beer and wine where there may have been a Roman building not exactly a villa. More like a pub.

Where all those findings go? Is museum built locally to bring in tourists or they archived never to be seen again? I wonder how the people that lived locally were able to obliterate the presence of the romans so completely after the legions left.

They always seem to forget that up until the mid 19th century agriculture was big business. Britain exported shiploads of grain every year to Rome which meant a large cash income to the big landowners who grew it. I don't suppose they would be shocked to see a grand home or estate from the 17th or 18th century in some out of the way part of the country. Why would they be surprised at the Roman equivalent?

kha sab Some just don't understand that Tony is an actor following a script written to ask "dumb" questions that an average viewer with no training and limited interest in archeology would ask. Now that I'm into the 16th year of episodes, I totally understand the "roles" played by every member of the team. Tony's role is as the "everyman" and he sets the pace of the show. Without Tony, it would be a series of people digging in the dirt. Yes, Tony is obnoxious, but that is the role he was hired to play.

Hm - quite a change in the direction of this episode. Lots of banter, lots of closeup camera work, and as someone below said, lots of thinly-veiled insults. It seems to me this is the first episode where we've seen that kind of artificial antagonism between the team members that;s been set up for dramatic tension. And whoever was right - you do rather want to smack Tony a good one and say "shut yer gob, mate!" (Actually I wouldn't say exactly that, because I'm an American, but I bet they wanted to.)

The clay found in the first trench may explain the whole site. You have tons of tile debris, which brick makers may have been using to make pottery and tiles, mortar cement, and so far you do not have enough Roman pottery to establish that a proper Roman villa ever existed there. You have signs of huge burning where they may have baked the tiles and bricks. Huge dumps of random roof and hypercorst tiles adds up to a production site that relies partly on recycling of demolition rubble from other places. The dark discoloration could mark where the kiln was and it would have been larger than others to produce a lot of tile and pottery at once. I think it is a production site, where coins would be dropped while customers are ordering new batches of tile or bricks. If there was only a timber building, when the Romans left the area, there may have been some violence against the few Romans who hung out there for management alone. The one coin you found was from the end of the Roman empire in Britain. Two days in and no one has mentioned the possibility that it could be a recycling center and production center for making tile and bricks. I think you should be looking for what looks like a huge garden supply center today, lots of different kinds of tiles stored outdoors or under a kind of lean-to roof, but it is wrong to look for an upscale building. Cobbled surface says tile sale center to me with possible trade connections back to Rome.
@Invictus13666
@Invictus13666 2 года назад
Good thing you weren’t there. Fascinating to read so much absolute dreck. There were many coins found. Clay was the foundation material. The area of burning wasn’t large or intense enough for a kiln. Good god the ignorance hurts my heart.

Does anybody know why John never _starts_ with resistance? Does it take longer to process? Because it always seems more reliable...
@balist0
@balist0 8 лет назад
+schradeya I believe resistance is the most susceptible to weather and the like; it relies heavily on the moisture content of the ground and can produce absolutely useless results in some places some of the time. Perhaps they often leave it till later in order to reduce the risk of wasting time in case it produces nothing, as quite often everyone generally seems to sit around waiting for the first geophys results to give them an idea of where to begin the excavation.
@schradeya
@schradeya 8 лет назад
balist0 Hey thanks! That makes a LOT of sense! It looks to me like they start with the magnetic first, at least most of the time, right? And that would probably be because it has the most consistently reliable results since there is little that can get in the way, whether they're the most accurate or detailed or not... yeah? That makes a lot of sense, that the resistance it not quite as reliable and therefore potentially a waste of time, at least moreso than, say, magnetics or radar. Yeah, I think I understand. Thanks guys!
@areyouavinalaff
@areyouavinalaff 7 лет назад
with magnetics they can scan the ground while walking at a constant pace... not the case with resistance since he has to take a step, pause, trigger the machine, take another step, pause etc...
@schradeya
@schradeya 7 лет назад
Ah ok! So it seems, then, that it's just easier and takes less time to get a readable result with the magnetics, then they can do a more in-depth and time consuming resistance scan if the easier and quicker one tells them its worth it? That really makes sense. Thank you. Thanks everyone who answered my question!
@areyouavinalaff
@areyouavinalaff 7 лет назад
John doesn't do it all by himself anyway... so depending on the site they could easily be doing magnetics, resistance and gpr at the same time. depends on size of site and what information they already have about the site and what they're looking for... magnetics, for instance, is very good at showing kiln pits, but gpr gives good depth and 3d view of walls.

Have to disagree with them, I don't think there were stone walls. Probably timber structures mostly with stone foundations. Doubt there's enough building stone nearby to waste on walls. People need to understand that Tony worked from scripts. If you watch the specials, especially the "behind the scenes" ones, you can see him with a teleprompter, and I recall once he was speaking in the rain and laughed at his wet script. In about season 14 they started scripting more silliness and by season 16 Tony's been turned into a veritable gadfly.For those who find Neil Holbrook disappointing, I suggest you try turning on the closed-captioning (even though it's not very good) and Read rather than Listen to him. It's his style which distracts. I remember once Stewart said his mother spoke with great flapping gestures - as does Stewart himself - because she worked in a mill and it was too loud to be heard --- possibly that is Neil's background as well. Does anyone know where his dialect is from - sounds East Ender to me but what do I know? We tend to expect archaeologists to sound much more posh, more like Helen, and I had to work to understand Neil's speech.

@SNP-1999 5 лет назад
Those names, "Watling Street", " Fosse Way", " Ermine Street" were given to the Roman roads sometime in the past, usually not known when or why, but the actual Roman names of their roads - in Britain at least - are unknown. It is very different in Italy and elsewhere in Europe, for example the original Roman names of their main highways in Italy are nearly all known - for example the "via Appia" from Rome to the south of Italy, the "via Flaminia" from Rome north- eastwards, are still used today and have kept their original names. Regrettably, in Britain the names were lost long ago and replaced by those we know today. One can research on the internet how these roads came to be called as they are. 😋

+Upsydasy Me `Tony's scripters seem to have tried to artificially add drama where there is none. Completely not needed nor welcomed. Half the time when Tony is ragging I turn the sound off. Also irritating is Niell's speech impediment--seems like he is not getting any air through his nose, kind of distressing. The others should just stand up to Tony and tell him to be reasonable. Archaeology is not cut and dried like a vending machine. All the upfront complaining does not make it go better at all. Nothing like a complainer to make me complain!
