I have always appreciated Ian's control when operating the digger but when he put the bucket in the trench and pulkled out a piece of pottery.......just WOW! I think he could safely scratch your back with a JCB.

As a map maker I can tell you that those "Z" shaped lines on your building that was not to scale are a draftsman symbol for a length has been shortened and is not being drawn to scale on purpose. It's often used on very long straight lines where you are conserving room for something else. Therefore there was nothing wrong with your old map.

It looks like Helen could do the next 100 years of Time Team without aging. She needs to be investigated and see what the magic is in her Genes. Perhaps Mick could manage another 100 year too. He still looks like father Christmas. Love these videos.

It's funny isn't it how different people see things so opposite end of the scale - personally, I can't stand the woman. She irritates me beyond belief and ruins every episode for me that she appears in. But hey-ho each to their own and all that.

Victor, as I have said before, is an unsung hero of this series. Look at the two characters at 43:26 and think about who they depict. Are they Mick and Phil portrayed in earlier lives, with an early/younger (?) Tony standing to the left? Well done Victor, what a caricaturist you are.

@40:50... "Whoever he may be..." Prince Platov was a Don Cossack general. he led the irregular forces that hounded the French out of Russia in the winter of 1812/13. Following on he commanded their cavalry in all the major battles up to Bony's abdication in 1814.

One dislike? What's not to like? It's got proper archeology, proper history and tons of British humour. And I wish YT would wise up and stop complaining every time somebody uses British English spelling. Truth is that British English is the only true English. The whole world knows this apart from YT (Google).

I have a challenge for Time Team, should I ever build a TARDIS. Here goes: I have an ancestor who was buried at St. Alphage Churchyard Cripplegate, outside London. The church was closed by Act of Parliament at the end of the sixteenth century, and demolished, according to Wikipedia. The churchyard to the north of the London Wall was still open in 1677, but was subsequently built over. The last building on the site, using the London Wall as its southern boundary, was destroyed by bombing in the Second World War. Your mission: Find the church. :-)

The ring found on the site reminded me instantly of the Irish Claddagh’s (friendship) ring. The only thing missing are the hands holding the heart. But the face does show an attempt to make a design of some sort below the crown which may have been an attempt to engrave the hands on to it. The design and customs associated with it originated in the Irish fishing village of Claddagh, located just outside the old city walls of Galway, now part of Galway City. The ring, as currently known, was first produced in the 17th century. "The Claddagh's distinctive design features two hands clasping a heart, and usually surmounted by a crown. The elements of this symbol are often said to correspond to the qualities of love (the heart), friendship (the hands), and loyalty (the crown). The clasped hands on a ring is an ancient Roman tradition where it was called a fede ring. A fede ring is a design of ring in which two hands meet and are clasped in friendship, love or betrothal. The design is ancient going back to Roman times if not before. It became prominent in the medieval period from the 12th century onwards and in more modern times. The name fede is from the Italian phrase 'mani in fede' or hands clasped in faith. The way that a Claddagh ring is worn on the hand is usually intended to convey the wearer's romantic availability, or lack thereof. Traditionally, if the ring is: - 1. On the right hand with the point of the heart toward the fingertips: the wearer is single and may be looking for love. 2. On the right hand with the point of the heart toward the wrist: the wearer is in a relationship. 3. On the left hand with the point of the heart toward the fingertips: the wearer is engaged. 4. On the left hand with the point of the heart toward the wrist: the wearer is married. The ring found on the site might be crude and probably home made but the possibility is there that it might be a Claddagh ring. Who knows maybe it was worn by the wife of one of the Governor’s estate workers.
@lameesahmad9166
@lameesahmad9166 6 лет назад
Maybe I am wrong, but the ring looks to me like a mans signet ring. Maybe the lover took his own ring and tried to make it special for his lady. Or maybe he could not afford a proper wedding ring.

Does the word hospitality come from the old hospitals then, that was both providing for the sick as well as travellers and pilgrims ? They were receiving hospitality at the hospital ?

Thank you so much for uploading. I'm American and the first to tell you that our country is shit compaired to Great Britain. There so much history to be learned and seen all around you. Here it's like o, well it's old not in perfect condition even if Christ did sleep here lets tear it down. I will defend us on one point, were always blamed for not knowing what's happening in the world unless we're sending our army there. But you have to realize that our tv and news don't cover foreign affairs like they do in England. We're not told a lot of things until they send our army there. I guess you could say if it were the revaluation I would be a loyalist.
@tonyoliver6797
@tonyoliver6797 9 лет назад
I really do love Great Britain, England in particular. You should take a holiday in South West near Cornwall and Plymouth. There are plenty of areas of archaeological interest all over the country. If you happen to go detecting over here in the UK and get a permit for some good land there is a big chance you will find coins, and other artefacts dropped by people working the land over hundreds of years and in many cases although seen as a lucky occasion, you may find a hoard. Although laws do apply and these hoards and burials add information to our history books that otherwise wouldn't have been there if they weren't found :)

Having watched this series, I think it's fair to say that the British population is made up of Scandinavians, Germanic tribes and Gauls.
@cathjj840
@cathjj840 5 лет назад
Sort of. I believe it's mainly Britonics, celtic peoples of similar origins to the Gauls, then the Germanic tribes of Saxons, Angles and Frisians who conquered and mingled with them, although not so much in the west where many Britonics retreated. There is some Scandinavian input, but not very much. Scots are also of Celtic origin, and Pictish. There are traces of the original, old European hunter-gatherer people that the Celts largely replaced.
@bernardtimmer6723

Not really Chris, about 80 % of the genes of the population of the British Isles is Gaelic, 20 % the others you mention. This includes England.

@@bernardtimmer6723 Hi there, Bernard. I think you might be referring to some older study. The latest DNA study I have been able to find says, on average, the mean Brit is about 65% European, all parts of continental Europe included, and 35% Anglo-Saxon.

Am I the only one that thought it was odd that they could see two square pieces of flat pottery at the end and decide it was part of a large pitcher-type of pot?
@lisakilmer2667
@lisakilmer2667 7 лет назад
That happens pretty often. It's all the way through the 20 years of TT. I think there are so many examples of pottery available that the experts can in fact draw conclusions from very small bits.

Although its a wonderful series, its funny when Phil stands amidst some walls telling Tony where there are walls, where they breakthrough other walls and no one can follow his explanations because no one does see the walls while he is standing on or in front of them. Not very much archaeology for three days. And in the end two little pieces of pottery . Is that really al to prove that there has been a middleages hospital?

Like i said before, Henry VIII, not the great, did to health care then what the 20th century modernists and John XXIII with his Second Vatican II Moderist non-Council did to health care in that century. Thank you Henry, thank you modernist heretic John XXIII (interesting he took the name of a much earlier anti-pope, the first john xxiii.) But once again, I digress.
