Oakham Castle is the best preserved 12th-century building in Britain, but there's much more to it than meets the eye.
The walled area surrounding the castle is full of mysterious lumps and bumps crying out to be investigated.
The castle was once home to the Norman knight Walkelin de Ferrers, who fought alongside Richard the Lionheart in the Crusades. Before that, the same site was home to some of our most legendary Saxon kings and queens.
Time Team's task is to find out about the many buildings that would once have surrounded the castle, and they're particularly excited about the prospect of finding de Ferrers' long-lost private quarters.
Fascinating finds add to the big clues on the ground, but it takes the full three days of twists and turns to determine what Oakham looked like 900 years ago.
And to mark the visit, Tony casts a special giant Time Team horseshoe to add to the extraordinary collection of hundreds of shoes that have decorated the castle hall for 500 years.

The lovely part about being half-way through Season 20 is that I get to go back and start all over again. I think I've watched the entire series and all the specials at least four times. And each time I watch, I learn something new. I'll be finished this time by Christmas (2021). the new year is coming, and so is Season 1. Here we go again. I know I've said this in the past, but my deepest thanks to Reijer Zaaijer for his dedication to the original Time Team seasons.

Stewart was one of the most impressive members of the team. His skill set is unique: seeing in both 2D and 3D and the ability to put many small visual cues together into a coherent whole. Episode 3 of season 13 gives some of his background and explains his rather charming quirk of waving his hands so broadly (child of a weaver, and weavers communicated with large gestures due to factory noise).

@@tehboneheadwell at it's core yeah. But the level of detail you go into by the time you've reached a doctorate is dizzying. I got to audit one of Stewarts intro classes and even at the intro level it's a wild deep dive into how to soak up history clues from ones surroundings. I'll never look at a field the same again that's for sure

Stewart is absolutly awesome. Right from the start I've always been amazed at the stuff he can figure out from lumps and bumps. In my opinion he is one of the most intelligent people on the Time Team team. Why Channel 4 decided to cut him from the 2nd to last series astounds me for its stupidity.

Well, that just pissed every off including Mick who ultimately left the show and whats-her-face got so frustrated she left and then the axe came down... good times, but, it is here for use for eternity so enjoy! and yes, DigVentures is a very cool crowd-funded venture with TT favourite Raksha Dave at the helm. This episode had far better research into the de Ferrers family than the Groby Hall episode (which barely even mentioned them, focusing instead on the Greys, who didn't even live there during the time period of the unearthed archaeology). Oakham Manor looks very similar to the buildable manor houses in the Skyrim video game.

Don't understand why all the horseshoes go against all things I have learned all my life about proper way to display them. You are supposed to display them with the open end pointing upward to hold the good luck. Turning them as these are displayed allows the good luck to drain out. In an area where the shamrock is believed to bring good luck, it surprises me that they do not follow the good luck of the horseshoe. Could explain Sir Tony... lol. Love Time Team! Am glad they have returned and brought in Gus instead of Tony. Stewart is exemplary when it comes to finding the hidden things by just taking in the entire sites they are examining. The medicinal spoon is interesting. Yesterday it was used to meter out medicine, but today it is more for snorting cocaine. Wonder if they used in King Richards time any of the drugs we find in use today to snort?

The Scot's know the truth. The devil thew a shoe. (2 pieces like an oxen shoe) He woke a Smith to fix it. The Smith recognized him and nailed the shoe into the quick of his hoof to force a promise. In pain , the devil swore to never enter a dwelling marked by the Sign of the Smith (horseshoe). That's why it doesn't matter if the shoe up or down. The Irish added the part about up so the luck won't spill out.

What I find rather interesting is that the ridge of the roofs of both the church in the outer enclosure and the hall inside the inner enclosure are in perfect alignment. Hardly a coincidence obviously but that shows the Normans meant to build both building in line with each other for a reason. The church was build in the 13th century which is about the same time the castle hall was build...

In the States (some states) we have what's called "Miss Utility." Under law you have to call them and let them know what, where, and when you plan to dig, and they coordinate all the relevant utilities who come out and mark all the lines. It's free - paid for by owner-member utility companies. I'm surprised the UK doesn't seem to have something similar.
@coyoteroadkill

We have something similar in Washington State called "Call 811 Before You Dig." We don't have a clever name like "Miss Utility."(I like that.) Having some guy come out for a half-hour is cheaper than sending a crew out for several days doing repair work.
@josskiteley
@josskiteley 9 лет назад
Not got the money or coordination for such things. As there are so many different utility companies it would be tricky to organise them and who on Earth would pay for it all? Utilities tend to be mapped for future work if they're modern. Some are very old though so can be a problem.

Some traditions hold that the horse-shoe must be 'up' so the luck doesn't run out, others maintain that it should be 'down' so that the luck pours onto you, but the oldest belief is that the position is immaterial - it is the iron crafted by a smith which gives protection against those beings to which iron is anathema.

The cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiores in Florence is not really a true gothic cathedral. It was begun in the late gothic period, but continued into the early renaissance where it was significantly modified and completed with an octagonal dome by Brunelleschi. There are no traditional flying buttresses as in other gothic cathedrals, nor were the decorations gothic. There is, however, an elaborate 19th century Italian gothic revival façade by Emilio de Fabris.

Granskare, you are wrong. If you check the history of horseshoes and the symbolism you will be surprised to find that many people think the horseshoe should be hung upside down so that any luck it released would be spread to those around it.

Horseshoe is always hung right side up to preserve the good luck.

Marnie Sweet My grandfather taught me how to ride and he trained many types of horses, including Hackney horses and thoroughbreds. In future, please do some research, before replying. The horseshoes he had, some from very famous horses, were usually hung either upside down or sometimes on an angle. If you check photographs of horses that won major races such as the Derby, The Oaks, Kentucky Derby, you will note that a horseshoe shaped garland is hung around the neck of the winner and it is upside down. There are many stories and tales attached to the hanging of horseshoes. Here are two of them. The first quotation is from Wikipedia. When kept as a talisman, a horseshoe is said to bring good luck. Some believe that to hang it with the ends pointing upwards is good luck as it acts as a storage container of sorts for any good luck that happens to be floating by, whereas to hang it with the ends pointing down, is bad luck as all the good luck will fall out. Others believe that the horseshoe should be hung the other way (with the ends pointing down), as it will then release its luck to the people around it. Nailing a horseshoe to the threshold of one's home helps to bring good fortune to the family. The horseshoe, tacked in place with three nails and the open end down, wards off evil. nuf sed. no need for more.

They really butchered this show. This last season (and a few before it) is full of added drama, made up conflicts, people behaving like teenagers. It used to be about professionals from different disciplines working together with mutual respect to solve an archeological riddle. Showing that teamwork and different people becomes something greater than the sum of it's parts. And it ended up like some crappy History Channel show. RIP Mick.

Aside from the music, it seems ok to me. The humour is the same. I think they were under pressure to tweak things. The one thing I noticed is Tony is mentioning peoples names which he only started doing it again in this series. I think it was their attempt to gain a fresh audience.
@omikronweapon

Time Team's ratings were on a (ever so) slow decline almost since the first season. At sóme point some exec is going to demand change or cancelation. Trying for the teen audience just by pasting in some nicer graphics here and there, seems quite desperate. Most teens just aren't going to be interested in this style of archeology, so unless you're digging up a dinosaur or completely intact castle, you might as well accept that.
