I think I'm turning into a god." Laude!!! Laude!!! Applause!!! Applause!!! (cachinnant/giggle) Jokes aside. I like Phil and I know a lot of other people do as well. He seems such an ordinary unpretentious fellow and yet he is an exceptionally intelligent and well educated individual. I love his colloquialisms and his fun team spirit. What I really like about him is that (normally) no matter how poor his trench is he puts in the extra mile just to make sure that he has not missed anything potentially good. (even if occasionally he 'loses his rag' with Stewart, Tony or Mike) You have to admit the whole team 'Hits the Mark'. Without Vincent, Mike, Tony, Phil, Ian, John, Guy, Matt and the ladies the show will collapse. I believe that is exactly what happened at the demise of Mike. R.I.P.

Barnaby ap Robert, that is not exactly true. I have seen him use all of the male characters (especially Phil) in the Time Team at one time or another.

@@lameesahmad9166 He especially loves to depict Mick Aston as a monk. Given that Aston was a vocal agnostic whose archaeological specialty was medieval religious sites, especially pilgrimage destinations, such as sacred wells and springs, as well as places that boasted relics.

@@daneclark3161 I wonder if some sites get filled in with what the next settlement has to displace, or farmers evening out fields, and such. And in other cases people just took what they could of stones from abandoned places, and again the farmers threw some dirt over it to expand their fields. But I'm just guessing.

As I said, that was not the impression I got when watching so many Time Team "Roman Digs" with Mick Aston enthusiastically participating and obviously loving every moment. He could have fooled me if he really did "hate everything Roman", but there you are. I would have loved to have been able to talk to him about that remark, but that was not to be.

@@SNP-1999 His favorite was medieval churches and monastaries (spelling?). I think he got in the mood of the dig when there were good findings to be seen when they were digging for something else.

kha sab Let us respectfully disagree. I did not live in that time, I only repeat what I was taught and read about the subject. That is all. In any history you will have disagreements about the interpretation. I for one will stick to the idea that the Romans made life easier and safer as long as you paid your taxes and obeyed. You do not know the preference of the tiger just as I do not know the preference of the ordinary celts. Your analogy of the tiger is an analogy supporting a conjecture (animals are happier in the wild). I also do not think that for the ordinary people one civil war is much different from other civil wars, even with 2000 years separating them. It is unsafe misery. One of the first needs for people is safety and security. So I still maintain that the situations in Syria and Lybia are comparable to pre Roman Britain with tribal wars all over the place, not to mention the intra tribal wars. This was called"pacification" AKA winning the hearts and minds of the surviving natives-if any. Very few, if any, nice peaceful empires have been recorded in history. Rome, like all the others was certainly not one of them.

Robinson, as an actor, saw his role on Time Team as a peripatetic, inquisitive but rather clueless "amateur" who would try to "humanize" the academic "experts" with his supposedly stupid or annoying questions. The pros would then calmly explain, in plain language, what on earth they were doing. In other words, he was playing "us".TIME TEAM insiders reported that until the scripts called for him to go into "action" he would spend his time comfortably in his car, van or nearby shelter. There was always a good bit of "show biz" on TIME TEAM trying to make it interesting and entertaining to the general public. It was , after all, a TV program, not a video course in archeology.

Anon Nymous I would imagine it's for comfort while digging. It's sometimes hard and painful to squat or bend over in jean shorts without pinching or pulling on some pretty delicate bits. Also, when the legs of the shorts extend too close to the knee the fabric tends to get caught on the thighs in the front.
