In the 18th century the Royal Navy was the most successful fighting force in the world. To maintain this status it desperately needed better ways of looking after its sick and wounded, so in 1746 it decided to build the best hospital the country had ever seen, near the Portsmouth dockyard at Haslar.
Costing £100,000, it was the biggest construction project in the country, and for over 250 years Haslar treated sailors from The Battle of Trafalgar to the Gulf War, until in 2009 the hospital closed its doors on the sick for the last time.
Between 1757 and 1826, thousands of seamen and marines of the Royal Navy are believed to have been buried in a Navy-designed cemetery in a field beside the hospital.
Exactly how and where they were buried is not known and, as part of the closure programme, the cemetery has to be excavated, to find out where the burials are and how many there might be.
Time Team followed the archaeologists as they uncovered multiple burials and carefully analysed the remains, providing extraordinary insight into what life was like in the Georgian Navy.
There were no headstones and no records, but painstaking research built a picture of how and why the men ended up anonymously buried at Nelson's hospital.

2023 Update: Haslar was sold in 2009 for 3mills pounds. Between 2018 & 2020 the hospital was converted into retirement flats. Per Gosport Heritage, "The development plans are to retain and enhance everything of heritage significance, heal the scars of the late 20th century and construct new buildings to complement the old ones." Sometimes are events are held to showcase the hospital & British Naval History.

Thanks for this post. Great program. Nelson, his men and ships should be remembered for all time. to paraphrase Anon Nymous below "The ships were made of wood, the men were made of iron".

until the shrapnel start flying and started throwin teir stuffing around, then more like scarecrows in a springtime storm, inside an ocean-lurking fire-burping lead-spitting linen-winged hemp-sinewed wood-dragon that couldnt invent dogberry or pine needle tea... not even the drugs of the shamans of the mostly stone-age level globe it dominated could trip up something like that :D

I've been to RHH many times and have lived to tell the tale. Parking was always a bit of a nightmare though.

The age of wooden ships, and iron men.

Except they weren't iron. Many weren't even men. This would have been a cruel, brutal, and short existence. Don't romanticize it.

Does anyone else see a similarity in that man talking to Phil and Prince Charles?

I'm afraid that thought doesn't reflect well for either of them.

That was my thought too! Glad to see someone else note the resemblance.

Is Tony sick? He seems to have a expanding abdominal girth. Maybe ascitis or cancer.

I think it was just beer. If you watch later programs such as the one he did of hiking across different trails, he had gotten back into better shape.

Did you even watch this special? There is no mention of VD, just horrific battle wound for the most part.
