Two hundred years ago, Swansea was one of the wealthiest cities in the country, if not the world. The source of those riches was neither the coal nor the steel recently associated with the area, but copper.

I think Ian and his digger are underrated members of the Time Team.

Yes but you can say that about other team members too. Ian Powlesland did have his moments in the spotlight, both as an archeologist (his real profession) and as a digger, but there was just so much talent on the team there wasn't room to feature them all.

damnit! about 10 years ago, on a flea market in Graz/Austria, there was an old man selling a couple of massive copper bracelets that cought my eyes, with linear and circular patterns engraved and weighing probably oover half a kilo each. he told me that he had worked in the Ruhrgebiet in Germany in the seveties at a furnace where they smelted scrap metal. at one time, they had gotten a delivery of copper scrap from central Africa, also containing hundreds of these bracelets, of which he picked a couple out of the scrap before it all went into the furnace. I could have bought all 6 of them for only 150 Euros but didn´t because I did not realize the historcal significance of these pieces! ...I might as well sit down and cry now...

peter koller I can’t believe someone didn’t at least try to find out if those bracelets had value. Typical! Too bad you didn’t pick them up when you could have. But it’s even worse that they were all scrapped before that. They probably had value above the scrap value.

@@keirfarnum6811 don´t know the copper scrap prices and the exact value of those bracelets 10 years ago, but today: copper scrap 4,50.- euros/kilogram (thats apx 2.50.- per bracelet), and the value of similar size/shape/patterns bracelets in the same state of preservation which I googled the other day: 150-280 euros per piece!

maybe you are thinking in terms of more usual conditions where the laying down of soil and dust is on a more geological time scale. More recent sites like this were buried intentionally. Maybe to redevelop, or just for green space, but mostly to get rid of what must have been quite an eyesore.

@Captain 'Winkle' You are imagining them in pristine condition, not run down and dilapidated as they would have been after sitting empty for a time. They would also be a visual symbol of unemployment, social malaise. I understand what you are saying. There are, even here in Ontario, old industrial buildings of the Victorian era that somehow survived and have been re-purposed. But they are exceptional. By and large though, I think it a constant around the world that once an industrial building goes vacant, people don't want to see them anymore, in the short term at least.

This episode felt very weird. The third day was like any classic Time Team episode. The first and second days seemed different, with the latter being a little closer to the third than the first. A lot of stuff was happening, but it wasn't really discussed in any detail. It felt like the news ticker version of Time Team. I don't know if it's a product of the period being investigated, a lack of time, or some form of executive interference.

Yet another late episode with Mary-Ann Ochota. She doesn't have any archaeological background and doesn't have great presenting skills either. Sadly, there was not much archaeology being done, but too much effort being put in to finding traces of the slave trade - and even then they were guessing. I switch off when something that should be educational becomes nothing more than satisfying a political agenda.

The Copper bracelets made there were use to purchase slaves on the African coast. From there the slave were sold in the Americas not in Britain. So there would be no evidence of slaves at all at this site.
@RobKoelman
@RobKoelman 3 года назад
Correct. The emphasis in this episode on the slave-trade is just to fulfill a 'demand' to be politically correct. In reality, the copper bracelets linked to the slave trade are just a by-product of the copper production on the site, less than 0,001 percent of the total copper production I would guess.

The really exaggerated emphasis in this episode on the slave-trade is just to fulfill a 'demand' to be politically correct. In reality, the copper bracelets linked to the slave trade are just a by-product of the copper production on the site, easily less than 0,001 percent of the total copper production I would guess. 41:56 Even a major product - copper nails and plating for sea going ships - is artificially 'linked' to the slave trade. As if all the sea going ships in the last 200 years had no other function than transporting slaves. Sure... I standardly give the episodes of Time Team a 'thumbs up', but this one gets a 'thumbs down'. Too little archaeology, too much political correctness...
