It’s important to know one’s strengths and weaknesses… And when it’s time to bring in an interior design, pro. When it comes to important issues, like buying furniture, committing to the placement of your TV, or making structural changes it’s better to have a pro opinion on your side. Expensive mistakes are not something I want to make! Join me and my friend John Turman as we walk around the new bungalow we’re moving into.

John is right - the bookcase on the opposite wall from the fireplace is a much better fit… I have done interiors for 30 years and it would really balance the room

Yes across the room from the fireplace your beautiful library could make it's own statement and anchor that side of the room. On the wall adjacent to the fireplace, it fights with the lines & scale of the built ins.

Linda, I was a kitchen designer for a lot of years. Regarding the kitchen shelf, I would just cut it. Have a piece cut out where the range is, the edges aligning with the range hood, and have two little shelves, one on each side of the range. Hope I make sense. I think this way you get to keep the shelf, and, most importantly, no fire hazard, and you don’t have the obstacle over the back burners. Think cooking a big pot of pasta or soup.

Pay very close attention to John's ideas and suggestions. One only has to look at his home to know that he knows what he's doing. I would love to hear ONLY John's ideas on decorating the entire house and see where it would go. I feel he wasn't allowed to have too much input. I agree with everyone else just looking at John's house assures me he would have some fabulous ideas. Personally, I would prefer a formal dining room instead of a living room you will probably never use. The living room will end up being a big foyer. John's ideas on the great room are definitely the best solution. The fireplace and the heavy dark bookcases are too much in one corner now. Also, to think that I slept in one room and my clothes were in two other closets as you suggest hubby would do would drive me nuts. As far as the shelf over the stove. I agree with covering the shelf with stainless steel but limit it only to the width of the stove and trim each end with a brass banding to match cabinet pulls. Love the new house and looking forward to what your plans are for the yard.

Definitely a great idea. To have a house as big as this, but only able to seat seven people, maybe, when your goal is to entertain... and the small table is situated in the corner of the room, seemed counter productive. Give yourself a large table, and if you can't figure a way to put it in the kitchen, make that front room into a dining room. The work area is big and will dwarf the eating area you now have planned, so proportionately I wondered why John never mentioned this. I think he was trying to support your idea of the built in seating, but that could easily become a corner with open shelving for display of pottery and books and plants, giving lots of character to the kitchen, as well as holding Hubs chair. Go for a bigger table. And, unless you are sold on bar stools, you might want to rethink that as well. Do you like sitting on a stool to eat? That space could also become open shelving, or closed. Your goal is to entertain, and a seven person table is a poor investment for you, and the proportion is off. And, you have a whole other room that you can incorporate into your dining area. Think outside the box and you your space for what you need it to do. And scatter seating around the perimeter of the rooms, because when you entertain, everyone ends up in the kitchen!
@carole-f8x
@carole-f8x Год назад
@@brendafalk5162 I got the idea I think from the first video that she was planning to use the table in the great room for entertaining more people but I agree with you about using the front room as a dining room or I was thinking to not put stools at the island and instead put a long table there but I don’t know if there is enough room. I am not a banquette person. We use our dining room to eat all our meals so I don’t think of it in a formal way.

I am in total agreement regarding having a dining room in the front room, instead of a sitting area It seems like Linda has loved decorating her dining room table with tapered candles and gorgeous flower arrangements. As you said, how inviting a dining room would be with that fireplace.
@lindylou3519
@lindylou3519 Год назад
How weird, though, to walk thru the front door into a dining room & kitchen. If the main entrance into the house could’ve been thru the great room, this would not be so awkward. There are some issues with the way this house was renovated for the entertaining she has in mind. Plus the historical details inside the house was lost, but maybe that’s not important to Linda. The great room, replacing the picture window with French doors that open outward onto a large patio for dining would be great for entertaining in the warmer months.

I am an interior designer in NJ and i have an idea for over your stove. I wonder if you would consider using a quartz shelf with a mitered vertical apron making the quartz appear to be a thicker floating slab (without the weight or expense)? No fire hazzard, maintains that clean visual line, easily cleaned and highly durable. You could do this in a cost effective manner using remnant stone from a stone yard. Explore new TV technology and associated artwork displays to help educate yourself on the possibilities. Maybe the harvest table could move below the TV to include a bar setup, etc. Missed not hearing John's thoughts on use of the front room. I love your new house! Gorgeous! Regarding the banquette: we are in a 1934 house that the previous owners remodeled beautifully. HOWEVER, they put in a banquette in the dining room. It was so pretty with all their fluffy pillows and lovely round table, BUT in reality, it is very uncomfortable to sit on, even with pillows and a cushioned seat. The cushion slips off the edge of the bench, and there is a huge difference between how many pillows *look* pretty and how many you actually want on there when you’re sitting there. With company, we end up with four giant pillows moved into another room! We have a rectangular table as opposed to their round one, but the logistics are a mess. If you have the table far enough away from the banquette that a person can fit around it to sit, then it is uncomfortably far away when you want to actually eat. Hands down, not a single person, family or guest, has thought “this banquette was super comfy and a terrific idea!” Not. One. If I could go back, I’d tear it out before I ever moved in. And using it like a couch to watch tv from? We’d be more comfortable on the floor than trying to get comfy on our banquette. And it’s big, wide, the back is built with an angle so you’re not seated bolt upright, and has very nice cushions/pillows. And yet. So, before you drop a bunch of money retrofitting that cute table, etc, watch a few movies sitting on that banquette first. My fingers are crossed that yours is more conducive to comfort than mine!

Hi Linda, I’m sure you’re getting overwhelmed with suggestions and comments. I was soooo happy to see Jon assisting you and offering his design expertise. My thoughts: use the front room as your dinning/entertaining room. Currently that room doesn’t seem to have a defined purpose. I would suggest a round dining table with leaves to expand when you entertain a larger group. You can store the leaves in the front closet. I believe someone has suggested using that closet as your entertaining closet. In the kitchen I would take out the banquet. They really aren’t very practical for seating. Now you can put your mom and pop chairs there. Hubs can keep you company while you cook and tv watching. I’m sure Jon would have suggestions for making the front room function as dining space and entry.

I don’t think yal realize how hyped I am for this journey. This is going to inspire me to start

Have you considered replacing the clear glass of your front door with stained glass ? Because it’s more privacy.

Agree, if you can get HP to approve. Notice the stop sign on the corner is in sight line through window. Your new plantings may address that.

My husband has snored and woken me up almost every night for the past 10 years. My friend suggested l follow her lead and get separate bedrooms ! Best thing we have done . Our main bedroom is on the first floor and his is upstairs.. ( TMI .. l can still hear him snoring unless l close the door 🚪)

Hi Linda! With the ledge over the stove, I would really consider replacing it with something half the depth, or even make it a little ledge where you can lean things. That way it still has that beautiful line, but is more practical for cooking.

That's what I was thinking, or narrow it to a few inches over the stove and wider on both ends. Would the long sight line may be preserved that way?

So glad to see John and that you were seeking his input. I was a bit disappointed at the lack of outlets in the master bath. In love to have a low wattage lamp on in the bathroom in the evenings and night time. Also a wall towel warmer would have been nice on the far wall (without outlets, sadly). What are the stainless steel cleaners you think work well? Agree with John on keeping the weight distributed. The bookcases really need to be opposite the fireplace!

I agree with John in putting the TV on "book shelf" wall, and a swivel chair! I also agree that a good size round table between couch and window wall to be used as dropping off point with a nice lamp. Other options for book shelves, put one against that entry wall and put one in your office. Maybe a bar cart near the "one" shelf unit with a large piece of art over it. Also, I know this has to do with purchasing furniture but don't overlook Murphy beds! They free up space, have built in shelves, and are very functional. Costco has some very nice ones and there are plenty of people experienced at installing them. Also, you can find inexpensive round tables and cover with fabric and glass and if need be use/move the table to be near your banquet when extra table space is needed for holiday meals. Love, love this house.

I LOVE, LOVE anytime interior designer, John Turman, is on the channel. He has such wonderful and sound advice. I couldn't agree more on reconsidering the placement of the tv in the great room. As much as I love the bookcases in the great room - I think the placement of them on the wall John is suggesting makes total sense and balances out the room. You can still have a drop-off point. Linda, when you suggested having a large piece of artwork over the tv - and moving it when you use the tv - ..... something to think about. However, realistically thinking, how often do you think the art work would be put back when done watching tv. It might sound good on paper but not work in reality. Also, what a great eye John had when seeing your closet near the front door - such great ideas. One more thing - would you consider putting up criss-cross windows in your office like in the living room? Have fun with it all ❤

I love the idea John gave you for the tv. I think his ideas were right on the mark. I don't know if you have given thought to perhaps printing out the beautiful piece that your son Johnny wrote and having it framed. It would be a definite conversation piece, and I'm sure it would mean a lot to both you, hubs and your son. I am so excited for the process to get started. ,

This was such a fun video. I love the design process in a new space. John and you together make a great team. He is so professional and soft spoken. If I may I would like to share my 2 cents. When he repeats an idea several times it means that he is strongly advising you to shift your vision . You are extremely good with design in small rooms. Your old home was gorgeous. That back fireplace room is tough because it is so large. I know you and John will come up with a beautiful arrangement. Also I am so glad that you are going to use some of your furniture. You have so much beautiful light that your darker wood furniture will warm the house and it will still be light and airy. Have fun with the process Linda. I am excited to see how the house evolves. Much love to you.

Love the new house! Another idea for the TV is to separate the bookcases/library cabinets, which will create a space in between to hang a TV (one bookcase would be on each side of the TV). Maybe a sofa table placed below the TV or even a slim desk with chair. If you add curtains to the window side, those can be closed to prevent any glare on the TV. This idea would (1) not block the view of the beautiful fireplace (2) not block the view out to the backyard and (3) be somewhat hidden when you enter the room.

I really like John’s ideas for your grate room. His suggestion to hold on to everything as you could use it in other spaces was smart - also he loved the art work over your fireplace I would make sure your master bathroom is private all the time as John pointed out you still have those little windows at the top. You don’t want to pull shades every time you enter the room or worse people looking in. I’m so in to decorating excuse me if I get a little carried away! Enjoyed your video! 🥰

I don’t think an oval shape will work for a table in a banquette. The person on the end will be eating at the curve. You’ll need rectangular.
