Imagine if Climo got to play disc golf every day like McBeth. The fact he worked CONSTRUCTION 40 hours a week and still has so many stats over mcbeth should alone be enough to say "yeah Climo is so obviously the GOAT" If the disc golfers of the 90s in their prime had the opportunities for sponsorships and salaries as disc golfers do today, copy and pasted into the modern era we would see Barry Schultz, Ron Russell, and Scott Stokely playing at the level of McBeth, Wysocki, and Lizotte, and Climo would still be a lone pillar on a tier higher than them just as he was in our real history. I have always disagreed with the "more skilled players" arguments based on all those factors including the ones I didn't mention but were mentioned in the video.

Comparing pdga ratings of different eras is a meaningless measurement. The strength of field is part of the rating calculations and not as many competitors are boosting that in Climo’s era. Many would say that’s all the more reason he’s not the best. This is a separate point and a fair thing to discuss.
@brandonstevens1832

I mean.. if anything, players are much better as there's a massive pool of players comparative to the 90s. Player rating is determined by how well other players play, so the "he had these discs" argument is awful. So this further illustrates how much better Paul is than Climo. This isn't even a debate. No offense to Ken, but his biggest competitor was Scott. And Scott was never the caliber of anyone in the top 50 today. Courses are much harder, take much more power, and requires extreme exertion on the body to throw max distance shots with drivers. You need a 500ft hyzer to birdie a lot of par 3s on tour today. Ken is and was amazing.. and he's probably more comparable to Wysocki (outstanding peaks) than PMB who is easily the most clutch player of all time.

Why are we comparing Paul and Kenny? Why not Ricky, or someone else? I will tell you why - Paul has 6 world championships. He is one of the most winning players right now. You can't end the debate between these 2 players because numbers don't prove anything. Strength of competition also means nothing. It's all speculation. Player ratings weren't even around till 2002. Paul is being filmed all the time, Kenny was filmed every now and then. You think Paul is the GOAT because he has better numbers right now, and you see how good he is on your screen, so what? Unless you can make Kenny 20 years younger, or take Paul back in your time machine then this "debate" is useless. I started playing in 1981, I watched Kenny live & in person. I say Kenny is better than Paul. Because the number of world championships is why Paul is in this conversation, Kenny is still the GOAT.

Climo would probably have been a better ambassador if he was getting paid like the current pros are.

Don’t know and don’t really care, but you may have just defeated you’re own argument. KC working a full time job and playing at that level is unbelievable. Think of how much harder they all had to work on their game. How good would other pros in sports be if they had to work full time jobs on top of playing their sport? Honestly Paul probably is better, but not by much considering he has no other worries financially. The last argument I’ll make is being able to play well under pressure. Something that can’t really be measured. KC is probably on par with PM in that category. Not really fair to compare a guy who played disc golf as a secondary job to a guy who only plays dg for a living.

I've watched both and Ken never had to struggle for much. His competition would struggle to place in the top 50 in today's game. This debate again…is not really a debate because you can’t compare the eras, as has already been said. It was a different game in Climo’s era: shorter courses, single chain baskets, mostly backhand play, and fewer, slower discs with so-so less consistent plastic. In Climo’s era, they played a finesse game meaning you would have to throw your disc with a certain speed and angle to get the line you wanted, given the wind and weather conditions. They also had few discs to choose from. That meant that one disc would do the job of many by today’s standards. And the stable disc they had in their bag could quickly become understable after a few tree hits because of the poor plastic. The pros were always searching for those good runs of hard to find overstable discs because discs in general were so inconsistent, much more than today. When they found one, it was like finding gold, and nobody was giving away good discs as they were so hard to find. Because the discs were often understable, the player were experts at the anhyzer and turnover shots, especially in the woods. And they could improvise with the “wrong” disc when they had to. Sidearm or big distance was not considered necessary. When Stokley played on the tour last year, players said he still had big distance and one of the best sidearms in the game. He had these same advantages when he played in the 1990s , but he could never beat Climo. The single chain baskets would spit out several dead center putts every round. And this is with the general use of the softer loftier spush putt because a spin putt would spit out more. A big putt would have a hard time staying in the basket. That’s why it was often normal to lay up when putting outside C1. So, could McBeth or the players of today beat Climo in the 1990s? Not happening. Just as Climo couldn’t beat McBeth or many of the players of today. The game is too different in each era. To compare, conditions and skills have to be relatively the same and in the Climo / McBeth eras they are not.

Ultimately this debate doesn't really matter. Russell vs Jordan isn't really a good comparison. Basketball is a team sport. It's more similar to Woods vs Nicklaus. Comparing the eras is like apples to hammers. Paul benefits from plastic and disc changes and more money on tour leading to having the leverage to make it a career. Ken seems to get penalized for fewer great competitors in his era which I don't get. How is that His fault. So since Wilt Chamberlain played against less talented defenses and players, is his individual dominance less impressive too? Had there been more and greater competitors for Ken, the game would've become bigger sooner. If the game was more popular when Ken dominated, he would have made more $$ and been able to make it a career too. Paul has been a almost impenetrable wall his fellow tour players have had to reckon with for a long time. And yes, Paul changed the game. Flipped the plastic script to new heights for sure. Let's not forget though, there may have never been the emergence of a player like Paul if it weren't for Ken. Ken paved the way for Paul and so many others. Without Ken doing that to Begin with, this debate would never have happened. For that reason, Ken The Champ, is the greatest in my opinion.

So what you're saying is, if Ken Climo at his absolute best had a time machine and traveled into the future to 2022, that he would get destroyed by McBeth? But also if he trained 24/7 like today pros and had access to today's discs, he would then likely be on the same level as McBeth?
@joeblow2426
@joeblow2426 Год назад
Right. This is a definite “what if.” What if Climo went back to the future as a child and developed a consistent side arm, a spin putt, used better and more types of discs, threw at multi-row chained baskets, played longer more challenging courses, and developed a modern, more reliable throwing technique? Or, what if McBeth went back to the past as a young man, never having played before, taught himself to play backhand only, learned to play a finesse game throwing a few stable and understable discs with mostly poor inconsistent plastic, spush putted at single chain baskets, and played on short courses? Then you could actually make a fair comparison between the two. (Good luck with that.) Statistics are much more meaningful when conditions are relatively the same. (Numbers can also be manipulated to project a desired outcome.) Clearly, in this comparison playing conditions are not close to being the same. The game in the two eras is too different.

The problem is... You'll never know.... But! Kenny did beat paul on a few occasions. Also, I think in 2016, kenny avgd. 1019 that year.... Not to mention the 1030 1040 rounds he played. He hit a couple 1050 rated rounds in 2015 a few times also. I think the consistency was falling but put that into perspective. He's playing at a high level towards the END of his career. I dont think he beat paul in that 4 yr stretch where he won all his titles... but again... He stopped playing soon after ... I think it's safe to say that they would have insanely good match-ups if Kenny was in his prime. This is 10 years AFTER Klimo won his last world title in MPO. And still put up insane numbers against good competition. His only tournament is 2017, and he avg. 1022. And Paul won with an avg of 1059. But again... That was kennys only sanctioned event that year. And hasn't played since. It's hard to think about because I think Paul is better. Ken Klimo was doing very well at the end of his career though, and I think if Kenny was in his prime, then his numbers are going to have a significant increase. I think people don't give Ken the respect he deserves. And just looking at how he played and when he played, not a lot of people recognize how good Kenny really was.

Not to settle the GOAT debate but I want to see prime Climo vs McBeth on a technical, wooded course like WR Jackson, Northwood, parts of GMC, MVP Open courses etc …head to head in the woods, I’m taking Paul. Seems like a lot of the courses in KC’s era were open fields, sloping golf course style holes and I would want to see them head to head with more technical, scrambling golf, with a wider variety of needed shot shaping selections. I’d take Paul over KC in the woods. I’d be interested to hear others thoughts on this. ***also, I think Ricky Vs Paul stats are different comparison than Ken Vs Paul for example because the same era Vs different eras…Ricky>Paul in a lot of tournaments except the big majors…where it counts more…6x Worlds, USDGCs > Ricky’s recent Elite Series wins or even DGPT…Worlds I think is the biggest stage of them all…6x in Paul’s era as opposed to Climo’s is more impressive to me AND let’s not forget Paul has been in the Top 2 at Worlds for the last 10 years

People still argue all the time about whether MJ was the goat. It is far from something "we all know" that MJ was more dominant than Bill Russell. I'd even say McBeth is far more dominant at dg than MJ was at basketball, and even that isn't enough to say McBeth is clearly the goat over Climo. In other words McBeth and Climo both have stronger claims to disc golf goat than MJ has to basketball goat. In most ways, the differences between the two eras kind of balance out. The other competitors that each had to dominate all had the same conditions imposed on them in their respective era. Climo courses were easy, McBeth courses are hard. Climo discs were crap, McBeth discs are great. Climo disc selection was few, McBeth's is many. Climo and the old guys were working stiff hobbyists, McBeth and the young guys are 100% pro disc golfers. Climo's collective knowledge of the game was small (the game was relatively new), McBeth's is big. The difference that doesn't balance out is number of competitors. More guys getting into the sport and playing in any given tournament is going to make it harder to dominate. And McBeth had to beat more guys than Climo. So his numbers get more weight. But, as the table shows, Climo's numbers are higher. So it ends up being really close. As of now I think Climo still takes it. And I think if you had him and McBeth start in the same era I think Climo would be more dominant by the time both players finished their careers. But McBeth's career is not over yet, and every potential win is only getting more valuable as the sport grows....

It’s ok. Keyser don’t have something called common sense. Brodie Smith would’ve spanked climo back in the day. Just watch footage. That’s like saying Joe Biden is cognitively sharp.

@@discgolfcontent I am one of them. I watched Kenny in his prime. I started playing in 1981. I have watched a lot of disc golf. Paul is very good, but Kenny is better because of his mental game. That's why the video ends in 43 seconds.

Climo is the goat. Respect where disc golf came from. Paul is great but numbers don't lie. people will always be able to make excuses for why it's a newer player. There's probably a kid right now that will one day be a world champion and he'll be up against stiffer competition, he'll have more time dedicated to the sport and with better equipment and discs. Ken climo is the goat just like Michael Jordan is the goat of basketball .
@Discsforbaskets
@Discsforbaskets Год назад
By your logic, Bill is the goat not Jordan. Climo wasn't playing pros that had the dedication he had or the players today have to the sport.
@dillonterry1
@dillonterry1 Год назад
@@Discsforbaskets Sure.. but he also didn't dedicate near as much of his time or have near the level of disc options that Paul has. Paul is making enough money to do this for a living. Climo had a job and still dominated in his spare time. it's a fun debate to have but Paul still has some wins to stack up and many more years to play. so we shall see. Either way Climo is a legend and his records will stand. A goat is an opinion.

One could device a metric which uses average distance to gain strokes from driving. Distance isn’t everything but given two players with equal putting, the one that throws farther with same accurary as the other will simply get better scores. I’m content that this kind of metric has gone up in years. Essentially it would say that in 90’s precision 300ft was enough to be in the mix. Now we are talking at least 400ft of shaped golf lines to get birdies and gain strokes. Then there probably already exist a metric which accounts for dominance. Often the more mature a sport is the more difficult it’s to dominate and there’s higher variance in winners. Dominant players could be called game changers as they take the sport to a new level. I’d imagine there’s a way of estimating players performance who plays in hard-to-dominate-era.

You can't compare discgolf to basketball So don't try. How about comparing discgolf to traditional golf......this makes more sense. So.... Who is considered the greatest golfer of all time? I believe the majority believes it's Jack " the Golden Bear" Nickaulus., With Tiger being 2nd. If they played against each other most think Tiger would best Jack. The same applys with these two. McBeth is hands down a better discgolfer and would come out on top more against Climo, but Climo is the GOAT!!

You will also have to consider the inflation that comes with development of new technology, new plastics new molds, need training regimes, knowledge etc. Maybe Macbeth wouldn't even have been close to climo in the 90's and 00's, when the game and the equipment was less developed? So maybe consider en normal distribution of professional players ratings and see if either player stands out when correcting for gained knowledge and better equipment. If no correction is made my suggestion is that every Hall of Fame in sports history should be cleared out because no players back then could compete with today's professionals.

Nowadays, more players are 10 strokes away from the lead than were even in the tournaments in the early 2000s. It's different eras though, comparing them is pointless. Like you said, Paul has more discs and better discs to choose from. But there's at least 30 players that are just as skilled as he is in every tournament.

Didnt represent the growth of the disc technology accurately. Climo almost swept the 90's in his prime. The wraith didn't come out until 05' and Ken also bagged a dd2 which is speed 13

Ken Climo dominated a weak era, simple as that. His only closest threat/rival is Barry Schultz (2X World Champion, with only 1 of that in 2004 beating Climo at Worlds), but that's just 1 threat Climo was put to the test, but for every other player in Climo's era he just beats them with ease, whereas McBeth had to go up against loads of good players in his era, not just 1. That's the only reason why Climo's career statistics in all 4 category are so high in his era, especially his ridiculous 12X World Champion in his name that somehow no other player in Climo's era didn't even come close to 😆, which validates a weak era.

I prefer the Jack Nicklaus/ Tiger Woods analogy. Jack Nicklaus is the GOAT but people think Tiger is because of recency bias, because they saw him play, and this is no different, Climo is on a level no mortal has ever come close to and made no mistakes during his prime years. Paul makes mistakes all the time

The development of the backhand form and forehand form have also played roles in Paul being better than kenny. Paul was raised in a climate that better understood the game. Paul is the all time GOAT, but Kenny never got a fair chance at playing in our modern era. He would have been a completely different golfer, likely throwing forehands and playing full-time. No matter how good Kenny was, you could never justify that he was better than Paul. Different eras, different lifestyles, different game. Kenny was the GOAT of his era.

This is actually a valid point. One could argue that all distance drivers in pro players bags could be replaced with different stabilities of Destroyers. I also have hard time seeing how disc technology has evolved drastically since Destroyer and premium plastic. Maybe Blizzard Champ Boss is an example, lightweight speed 13 disc that can handle torque better than it’s weightclass but that’s it.
