A few years ago I went to England for a dance conference. One day, going through the food line in the cafeteria for lunch, there was a young lady behind me. I said I wasn't sure what dessert to take. She authoritatively pointed to one and said, "Take that one." I don't know what made me say, "Yes sir, Mr. Rimmer, sir!" But I did. She stared at me for about two seconds then gave me the Rimmer Space Corps salute. We became instant friends.

I love how you all talked about Chris holding the joke. I have always referred to that as "persistence humor". The comic has to have the confidence that no matter what the audience reaction at first, it will get funnier and funnier the longer you carry it out. The classic version of this I always think about is Andy Kaufman lip syncing the theme to Mighty Mouse (well, not the whole theme, just the MM part) on Saturday Night Live. He starts out with a glass of water, a record player and him. He puts the record on and just stands there, taking a sip once in a while until he stretches out and slowly sweeps his arm to mime along with "here I come to save the day!". The crowd started out unsure, but by the end they were rolling over the joke. Chris's salute is quite a bit like that.

I do like that Llewellyn plays reset Kryten with more of the original actor's RP accent vs his normal faux-North American one
@Rocket1377
@Rocket1377 3 месяца назад
It also matches how Kryten sounded in his first episode back in Series 2, (when he was played by David Ross with an English accent) before Lister helped him break his programming. A nice bit of continuity there. Robert Llewellyn normally uses a Canadian accent for Kryten btw, not an American one.
@Johnny_Socko
@Johnny_Socko 3 месяца назад
@@Rocket1377 Hence "North American" since Canada is part of that continent, and Robert Llewellyn has characterized his accent as a _failed_ Canadian accent. 😄
@adamcashin4021
@adamcashin4021 3 месяца назад
I really have never been able to 'hear' the Kryten 'Canadian' accent. He always just sounded English to me and I was surprised when American reactors started thinking RL is American. Maybe its because RL is from Northamptonshire like me and all I can ever hear is his real accent underneath. I can though hear that RL is doing RP in the reset scene and I can clearly tell the difference between Krtyen's voice and RL's natural accent, so maybe my mind just hears Kryten's voice as Krtyen and cant put any kind of location on it at all.

I actually really like series 8. There are a lot of ways in which they recapture some of the feel of seasons 1 & 2 and I love that. IMO it is the series 9 that is really the low point and that is really down to just one major directorial choice / change in production which ruins the experience for me and which they fortunately fix for series 10 and on.

Love your reactions to Red Dwarf. I don't understand why people don't enjoy S7 onwards as much. S7 IS funny but yes I didn't like the canned laughter either but it IS still funny, S8 was rectified and filmed in front of a live audience again. I personally like S8. I suppose the only one I'm not keen on is the three parter of S9 if you can call it that. S10 onwards is still good, hopefully you can react to those too.

Didn't hear it mentioned but the crew walking toward camera in their Dibley disguises was a tip to Reservoir Dogs by Quentin Tarantino. And the tune behind them was Little Green Bag by George Baker Collection, used in the movie in a similar scene. The Dwayne Dibbley part at the end is awful. It makes no sense (why would disguising themselves as him fool the other crew members? It would just draw more attention to them), and how did Cat find false teeth and black mops just lying there? Even with a luck virus that would be a stretch. It's also not funny, it's a dated reference to Reservoir Dogs, and it's out of character for Cat. He hates Dwayne Dibbley, and wouldn't be caught dead dressing up like him.

I am a HUGE dwarf fan. Started watching it from the very start when I was only a young lad (I was 5 when it first aired and my parents loved it) Have proberly watched the first 6 seasons over a hundred times easily over the years. For me (and of course everyone has a personal opinion on the matter) once Rimmer left in series 7 and Kochanski came on board I didnt enjoy it so much so after the first 2 episodes of season 7 I was disheartened. I must say watching them again more recently I can see that they arn't as bad as I first thought but still not a touch on the first 6 seaons. Season 8 having Rimmer back was a huge upgrade. Having Norman Holly back is a huge thing as well for me as he was always one of my favorate people in the show. I would say - and you will see as you go on with the season (No Spoiler here) I think while there were still elements of the Clever humour of the first 6 seasons I think they came to rely on silly humour more and more as the season went on. Yes there were always bits of that but it seemed to over take the show. 'Season 9' Which is just a 3 part mini series really to me was the awful should never have happened season if there is one but then after a break season 10 onwards does seem to get back to as close to original dwarf as you can get and I think from then until now is very good. I also think going back to 6 episodes from season 10 onwards was a wise choice as 8 I think left too much room for the unfunny to sneek in. What I woudl say also is that you have the furtune to watch these with out a break. 4 years between seasons 6 and 7. 2 years between 7 and 8. Then 10 years before season 9. 2 years till 10 then 4 more tille 11 came out. Because 11 and 12 were shot back to back we only had a year between them. Then a further 3 years to the Promised Land 'movie'. Each of these long breaks made use want so much more Dwarf that (espesally after the 10 year break for seson 9 which is I think universally thought to be the worse season) the disappointment of the not so great Dwarf made it a hard watch. In saying all this even the worst Dwarf is watchable due to the cast being so great and being invested in there lives. I think you will have a much better expirence than those who watched in real time - just think thats worth keeping in mind.

Yes the Series VIII laughter is from a studio audience reacting to the live acting in front of them, with only scenes that physically couldn't be filmed in that space being pre-recorded. It meant the actors could adjust their performance/timing to the audience reaction. It was only Series VII which was totally pre-recorded. They still got a live audience reaction for the laughter track, but they were effectively watching the completed episodes in a cinema.

The super long Rimmer salute at the beginning was improvised in front of the studio audience and Chris Barrie kept it going on as long as possible when the audience got louder and louder with their reaction. In rehearsal the salute wasn't really working and the solution was clearly doing it in front of a live audience and getting thier reaction. Also when the muffin is given to the captain if you look closely it has a 'Tescos' logo on it. Tescos is a supermarket chain in the UK

Me too while I still love the show it's not the same show I fell in love with. From now on the sets will be crap and the visual effects badly done only because it's expected not because they were working on a shoe string and just ignored it or made it part of the joke. The bigger budget and larger cast took away some of the claustrophobic tension driven character based comedy and replaced it with slapstick and visual gags still funny but a little to predictable.

This may have already been covered in the comments, but the hallway scene is an homage to Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs. The Slowmo + Little Green Bag as a way of introducing the ensemble cast was a highlight of the season for me. I know that I am in the minority among RD fans, but I really like this season.

It's worth remembering that you're only in the minority of RD fans _who are vocally opinionated about the show._

@JourneymanObfuscator While it might be a more direct nod to Reservoir Dogs, it's usually called the Hero Shot. Though it dates back to the very early days of cinema, it's modern iteration with the group of heroes walking slo-mo straight at the camera probably was best exemplified in the movie The Right Stuff. Pretty much every movie with any action in it has mimicked that moment ever since.

@@beauxguss6321 absolutely, didn't want to get too far into Film Major topics tho lol. I wrote a lot more on my comment about introductions of characters and other movies that do the same thing and deleted it all.

Chris Barrie models his on screen personality in most if his shows, actions and certainly voice on another British comedian named Kennith Williams whos voice and facial actons are like Chris Barrie after 20 red bulls.

I think VII is underrated but find it very hard to defend VIII. Luckily, it does get better again afterwards in my opinion, if rarely hitting the heights of Dwarf at its best again

I've been waiting like three seasons or so for this salute scene as I knew you would both love it. Might be different but it's still The Dwarf.

I still enjoy Season 8, even though there are more jokes and elements that don’t work for me. There’s enough of good things to keep me going.

There's no series of Red Dwarf I out and out 'hate', each one has its own particular charms. Personally I thought that series 7 was the show's lowest point*, and I actually thought that series 8 was an improvement in many ways, not least bringing back the live audience (and Rimmer, of course). I also thought resurrecting the crew was a neat twist. All in all I have a lot of affection for series 8. *So far. Wait until you get to 'Back to Earth'.

To my mind, series 8 is the weird tipping point between "still good Dwarf" and "okay, this show has run its course... please stop".

If their acknowledging Kryten wasn't built until some date after the original Rd Dwarf crew dies... How come they have the software/equipment to reboot him?

Nanobots upgraded everything to their current standard as a perk?

The same reason the ship is much larger and more advanced that it was originally. The nanobots enhanced it.
