At this point, 95% of these B6/7 S4s are complete basket cases. They need everything, and I mean EVERYthing. I mess around a lot with this platform, and so many engines have bore scoring, valve guide wear, and leak from every possible location in addition to the timing chain guide issue (by the way, you'll need to do the cam adjusters, too). Getting them close to the reliability one expects from a modern performance car is a mess. Either do it all or don't do it. Wait until the steering rack springs a leak. That's another fun job.
I have a supercharged manual avant that is currently being built at AM Tuned in Florida. Car will be close to 600 wheel when completed. I also track the car so feel free to see my racing footage on here :)
Mines an Avant in Imola yellow.. still has so much construction to go through but yeah... I know there will be a time when these becomes stupid expensive
"Invest in a V8 Audi S4?" NO, you buy one to have a blast while it bankrupts you, LOL. Speaking from experience, having owned 3 B6 S4s, LOL. (Including two Nogaro Blue ones...Best. Color. EVER!)
I own a 2006 Audi S4 Avant that to this day still only has 90k original miles on it. When I purchased it 6 years ago it only had 42k. Aside from the back left fender dealing with a tennis ball sized area of rust that needs to be treated, the car itself is in fantastic shape. That's actually why I'm on RU-vid this morning trying to research how I'd go about treating the tiny amount of rust on the fender of the car. Then this video pops up as I'm researching so of course I had to tap in! I also have it straight piped and she's the meanest sounding car within a few thousand miles of here! Ever heard a straight piped V8 Audi? Literally sounds better than Vettes, Camaros, and even Hellcats! They sound fucking incredible!
After owning it for a few years I ended up dealing with a massive oil leak. Like it was legit losing multiple quarts every couple days. Every parking spot I was using during this time had a huge oil puddle the size of like.. 2 to 3 feet by 2 to 3 feet? Long story short, that cost me almost $4000 to fix. Now, had this had happened with my 91 Honda Civic SI.. it probably would've only cost a few hundred dollars to fix.. (IF THAT). So yes.. the maintenance on these cars is extremely expensive and MUST BE CONSIDERED and factored into the decision of buying a used Audi. Don't get me wrong, I love my car, but I would be lying if I didn't say that I've had a few regrets along the way. I've also had to replace a heater core plastic piece that caused all my coolant to leak out one day.. that set me back almost $700 dollars.. and again, would've been a $150 fix on a Honda. Aside from spending probably upwards of $10 grand on repairs in the 6 years I've now owned this car, I love it! But if you're working a basic job (making less than $30 an hour).. I would not advice towards buying a used Audi. But if you got the money to handle those problems when they arise (AND THEY WILL).. then you'll love the car! Best of luck! @@halo091
and is why im happy i picked mine up when i did be for the prices went up and picked up mine stolen and recovered with keys for 3k now they are over 10k with in 2 years
Just bought one of these, auto, with a water leak, for $3500 Aussie dollars (1900 pounds sterling) Only done 60k miles. Hopefully the heads don’t need to come off…. Bout to start diagnosing, wish me luck
@daimianzarco4807 owned an s4 like that great car was my winter car 🚗:-) and Summer car was an 2002 s4 stage 3 500hp ! Love s4 but that being said b7 rs4 is arguably the best sedan Audi ever made and let Me tell ya it's sooooooooooooo fucking fun to drive it's mental bud :-)
@lancegallant3647 i have a s4 but is inside the garage 🥲 blew the transmission lol but i love the feeling when a old 23 old car gives me!!! I have a mk1 tt lol
@daimianzarco4807 Sucks when Your whip is down indeed :-(!! Had to wait for kwv3 coilovers from Germany my rs4 was no fun to drive with a broken spring 😢 so she sat 9 weeks so annoying but man she handles like a dream now but very $$$$$$$$ 7000 Canadian
Brother whatever you invest in this car it will be double what it’s worth potentially guaranteed. It’s a beast though just be prepared for some high maintenance
Jamie, would you please check the paint code on this S4(It's beautiful). Audi fans love to be positive about little things like paint names. Would be grateful for your efforts...
I have a 2004 Audi s4 sedan 6 speed Nogaro Blue with matching Nogaro blue/black interior with 150,000miles. What do you think it is worth? just recently serviced timing chain and valves btw very minty condition if i do say so myself. :)
Chains done with no leaks could get 15,000 if you are clean and can wait on a buyer , a lot of people that like this car are uneducated when it comes to price point ..People will pay if they want it bad enough and these are getting extremely scarce because people decide to part them or do engine swaps that totally diminish the legend this car really is
I have an identical sedan to the one on the video. 78K miles. Might sell it if I move from Florida to Washington State in 6 months or so. If I remember I'll make a comment here first. I've owned Audi's for 20 years. This one is mechanically good but the paint and interior have a few issues that can be corrected.
Guess not for now. I had the full engine out timing service done by AMTuned. I'm convinced these cars all have a chain support failure in progress. Mine did. Fixed now of course. @@Hexdealerr
Mechanics wNt to by it not fix it. So its sat. Fuel pump and cam sensors and coolant zensors sre in car for the year waiting to be instLled. 2 garages say nope that aint it. Jot sure why it wont start. I explain it over again. But can tgey buy it or the interiir for a couoke hubdred. Pisses me off. Still bills me .. and itll be another tow out of a garage with it n9t being worked on.. lots of guezsing and billing but zero listening and fixing
Fuel consumption that would make a Range Rover V8 owner think he’s getting good mpg and a case of ‘What organ shall I sell?’ when the bonnet has to be opened. It’s a 20 grand car. 10k to buy and another 10k in the bank for eventualities.
Is this a bigger money pit than S5 of the same vintage? I read that the timing chain issues were sorted on the S5 4.2 V8 and that the car is improved on the reliability front. I know that any car can be a money pit, but I am trying to gauge if they suffer from the same issues.
They are bigger money pits than the S5 yes, the timing chain issues were sorted on the B8 platform. I currently own a 2007 S5 V8, many problems are preventable by keeping up with basic maintenance, but they do have some niggles and the potential for big bills is still there. I do love mine though.
If you can do your own work and source parts well this car is a great piece to own , I have one but I don’t daily drive it either but fun weekend car show car
I have a b7 stage 2 jackal and though i like the car, its an absolute money pit. I previously had 3 b5s. 1 a4, 2 S4s, 1 being a stage 3. The stage 3 went 245k miles without a single issue or cel ever! The prohlem with the b6/b7 is that audi spread themselves too thin with the range of 1.8t, 2.0, 3.2, s4 to rs4. Being the rs4 would command and extensive premium Audi thought they could just drop a 4.2 engine into a car that was mechanically engineered for a 4 banger and slide the car into the mid range sports sedans. The car is simply too heavy, too hot, and leaks oil everywhere
Money pits. If they don't have the timing chains done then prepare to pay a good amount of money to have them done. Loved mine while I owned it but got rid of it while I was still able to.
@@totallynotbluu i dont know what kind of response this is. i never asked for this explanation. i asked for ALL the reasons why the s4 is a moneypit, not just that. and that is not even a reason. its a once in 5 year job. or maybe 4. thats 4 K for 4 years. thats not alot. so again, CAN YOU MENTION ALL THE PROBLEMS THAT MAKE THIS A MONEY PIT? if you can not oblige, please be quiet.
@@deathrager2404really? Why did you get so pressed, he gave you the biggest reason. Do your own research if you’re gonna be an ass. 4K is a lot of money to most people, chill out.
That's just older cars for you. Once an aging part is changed its good for another 100k. My A4 2.0TFSI has gone from 67k to 145k with no major issues. Had the car stage 1 tuned, clutch done(due to slipping from the tune) and the gearbox reconditioned shortly after just for peace of mind. All I've had to do is brakes, and a drive shaft broke, and regular services. One thing I can totally recommend with Audi's from the B5 B6 B7 era and probably the newer ones as they rack up the miles, is: CHANGE THE CLUTCH SWITCH. That easy to change £14 part is the cause of annoying rev hang. NEW cars are the real money pits, only your money is going on buying the thing rather than repairs.
Crap videos, it's like a sales video.. where is the real talk..it's quiet a poor engine, oil leaks everywhere, Audi reversed the engine to shoe horn it in...so engine out for any of the many oil leaks that are common. Mate got a 6k bill from a new chain, as engine out job, then to fix all the oil leaks, the leaking steering rack, all Hiden and only seen with engine out..
That arse about face engine put me off getting one with everything against the bulkhead . Plus they weren’t THAT quick and drank like a piss head at a free bar. Sound good though!
Still cheaper to fix any issues, and keep it tip top, than to shell out for any new car of this range. No point wasting effort posting comments complaining about them, true fans of the car love how they drive, sound, and look. They will happily maintain them.
@@martytdd1606 A review should highlight the money pits that they are, TVR's are also fantastic cars to drive and sound great... He normally gives a balanced review, the reason I am even typing is because it wasn't a balanced review.
What a weird ending to the video. He was talking and it cutoff.. Anyway it's never a good time to get these cars. I know from experience. I still also see broken ones for sell. Repair will cost more than the car. Buy them if you have money. I wouldn't recommend it to young folks...
Don’t know how you can do an owners point of view driving the car for a few hours. Done a long journey in it? Put fuel in it? Gone shopping in it? Took it for a service? These videos are irrelevant and pointless. It’s like somebody who catches a bus to work and makes a video owning a 60 seater bus. Dead channel
They will not go up in price, not a desirable model between audi enthusiasts, not iconic model as well. Nothing special about s4, just grill bumper side moldings and rear diffuser. Engine does not make much power. Everyone will prefer b8 s4 with compressor because of tuning potential. This gonna end up same as c4 chassis 2.2turbo goes up in price, and 4.2 v8 is just sitting in ads half the price of 2.2t
