Hi everyone, welcome back to the newest entry of my diary!
*****************
The episode you're watching is episode 12 of Season 1 of my life documentary: A Silicon Valley Engineer's Car Living Story. Each episode is based on real events and timelines from my life, and they’re all interconnected, like a TV series.
I've created a playlist on my homepage to help you navigate through the series. After this season, I'll start releasing Season 2 of my life. Hope my story inspires you. Thanks for watching!

Episode 12: I left the Bay and drove to Seattle for a week of business meetings. After the week, I decided to stay a bit longer…
Working in person with my team is completely different from working remotely. it feels like there's much more camaraderie. After seeing how much better the work collaboration is here, I started wondering if I should stay longer. I even toured some apartments to see if Seattle could really be my home.
My Seattle trip has given me so much to think about where I should settle down, but is it worth giving up the sunny days in Silicon Valley?
I am also getting more anxious about my car every day and starting to feel like maybe it’s time to let it go. So, I decided to head back to Vancouver for the weekend...
TIMESTAMP
00:43: More camaraderie while working in person
01:58: Debating whether I should settle down in Seattle
04:31: My friend took my car drifting
05:56: Cherry blossoms at UofW & apartment tour
06:58: Why I’ve been unsure about settling down in California
08:27: Heading to Vancouver to figure out what to do with my car...

You could change your car for a Van that has a kitchen, TV and a bed. It looks like you want to still be living in a car, then buy a Van that has more space for you and your dog. That way you can continue to move to other cities.

If you stay in Seattle, you need to get an apartment. Don’t live in your car. It rains all the time and you can’t sleep with the rain hitting the car all night long. Replace or fix the car so you have one less thing to worry about. It seems you enjoy the collaboration with your teammates and the connections to your building. If that’s what important to you then stay in Seattle. But you need to reach out to people as relationships are two-way streets.

The rain and early darkness is coming up, please find a cute apartment if you stay in Seattle. The city LOVES dogs! Join a club in Seattle- there are tons - dance, pottery, art, public speaking, hiking, just to name a few. Get to know people outside the tech world!

you gotta pick and choose your battles. Seattle is closer to your friends in Vancouver and closer to your colleagues in person. Downside is it rains throughout the year which youre not liking much. Regarding your car, sometimes you gotta move forward and look on the brightside. everything happens for a reason. maybe he damaged it and this is what finally gives you the final push to stop car living and find a permanent place. if you feel like the car living life is what youre going to sustain with, maybe this is the push to go for a roomier car as sedans arent really great for that. I really like what Nico Murillo did with his Model Y and how he transformed it into car living. super positive guy, worth your time if you want to watch his contents for inspiration and ideas of upping your car living life. whatever you choose, give yourself TIME!

It sounds like you’re vibing well with your team in person while in Seattle. You are also talking Silicon Valley still so you should think on it still. Your car definitely needs to go. If you’re thinking of trading, have you thought about of a bigger vehicle? Maybe a plug-in hybrid? Unless you want the Tesla still, than get the bigger model.

Hi Hannah. Your insecurities are starting to make some sense. If you're used to being more of an extrovert, enjoying the company of people, and not getting that in Silicon Valley or L.A., then you won't thrive in those places. There's a mass exodus from California, you just don't know who will be there from one day to the next. It's becomes harder to make friends. I know some people don't bother with friendships after awhile. The whole waiting around to get projects accomplished not just slows you down at work but, in your personal life. Just one thing, camaraderie is amongst colleagues at work. Friends exist outside of your work life. Don't mix up the two by sharing what's happening in your personal life, at work, and vice versa. Some employers can hold those things against you. Also, you really need to get a home base away from your car. Yes, you need to get a more spacious car like an SUV or van for the sake of Halo and yourself. Maybe get a month to month short-term rental apartment. Just don't start shopping for furniture until you're sure you are permanent there. You could always rent a semi-furnished apartment or get one that isn't and rent things like a fridge, and a convertible sofa bed that turns into a futon. Since Seattle is closer to your friends in Vancouver, I imagine that can be an advantage during the weekends. Hannah, just be careful safety wise. Young women who aren't mentally alert, physically strong, and don't have friends who would worry about you in case you became a no show can be easy prey. Go buy yourself a taser gun, take self-defense classes, and let your Vancouver friends and your team or female co-workers know how to get a hold of you in case of emergency and if you'll be leaving town. Also, call someone just to say goodnight, every night.

So interesting how different peoples brains and sensory reactions can be. So many people love the sound of rain, it soothes them, helps them meditate, or even sleep! but plenty of people are the opposite too!

I think if you trade in your car for model y, would you have enough income for an apartment? Living in a car doesn’t seem reasonable for a big dog living in the car with no movement. Long term, Halo could get joint issues being cramp in the car. You could consider getting a big camping vehicle so there’s space for you and the dog to live. It seems like in all your videos, you’re indecisive of what you want. Honestly you won’t ever know until you settle in one place and try it out for a year. It doesn’t help you build a community if you’re constantly on a move. You said you prefer sunlight rather than gloomy/rainy weather. Seattle rains a lot in the winter so you might not like it. You are better off staying where you had already created friendship at work and also being able to collaborate in person with your coworkers seems to be the best area to settle down. From all your videos, you sound like you’re searching for a connection with someone. When you find someone, that’s when you want to settle down in one place. Life has far more to offer than search for someone who will make you feel like you’re worthy to stay in one place. Hope this makes sense. Good luck!

I live in Silicon Valley and it's expensive as hell here. I vote stay in Seattle so you can bond with your team in person. We all need friends and personal connection with people and I don't think I could work by myself like that every day.

Seattle’s beautiful. Its rain isn’t as bad as some might think. Seems like your team up there is cooler, and more dialed in. They pay for their food so they’re already cooler. Seattle’s much better than the Peninsula imo. Either way a larger vehicle might be nice. But you know what’s best for you. Respect

babe! i so understand the lonliness and the struggles of being hired during covid. I started my new job during covid as well and felt really disconnected and lonely at the time, being alone most of the day at the workplace. but it looks like ppl are going to work in person at the seattle office! maybe this is what you were looking for? if you want to continue to live in your car maybe you should think about buying a bigger car with more place to sleep in the back, or even a tiny camper or van with built in bed, sink etc.

Great to see you thrive! That will most likely affect your dog, too, rendering a nice spiral effect upwards. Also, Stay in Seattle and investigate how the weather affect you, and rent an apt meanwhile to make a clean break from California. And upgrade to a Highland (RWD) IF you decide to keep a car - new workplace, new living space, and a new car that does not remind you of the non-friend (damaging your car) and his antics. Get around that way and see the state and all it has to offer. All the best to you! Greetings from Oslo

There is no perfect place. I think that you miss direct interaction with people when you work remotely and it takes longer to get things done. Then there is the weather factor. Currently you don't have a site that checks all your boxes which is why you keep going back and forth so maybe there is no resolution to your current situation other than to change jobs or companies or visit other worksites of companies in a place where you like the weather and see what the job situation is. The car needs to be replaced at this point because it is a liability and with that much driving it can be dangerous.

Hi, Hannah! Is it worth trading Silicon Valley for Seattle? It all comes down to your preference. Moving to Seattle offers a vibrant new chapter, distinctly different from the fast-paced Silicon Valley scene. Where Silicon Valley thrives on its startup culture and relentless innovation, Seattle provides a balance of booming tech industry and a rich lifestyle. Nestled in nature’s lap, Seattle combines professional growth with the tranquility of its lush surroundings, making it a perfect blend for those seeking a fresh perspective without losing touch with the tech world’s dynamism. Living in your car in Seattle can pose significant safety risks. The weather can be harsh, particularly in winter, making it difficult to stay warm and safe. Additionally, the city has regulations that prohibit overnight parking in many areas, which can lead to fines or towing. There's also the concern of personal safety, as cars do not provide the same level of protection as a home. It's crucial to explore safer housing options and reach out to local resources and shelters that can offer assistance and support. Your well-being is paramount. I'd recommend finding a suitable apartment for you and your precious fur baby. Just wanted to remind you that you have an amazing community behind you. We're all here to support you, and you’re never truly alone.

honestly you situation is best if you can relocate to edmonton or calgary. the problem in vancouer is that there is no shelter and too many homeless people. they got really affordable rent in edmonton and calgary is rated as the top 10 place to live in the world by economist. if you can work remote, I would consider these 2 canadian cities ( been to both last year and loved it) the problem with seattle is that 1. ) its overpriced and 2.) crime, now calgary and edmonton solves both ( i lived there as a nomad last year drove and lived in my car in 4 cities , san fran, la, seattle, vanvouver , calgary and edmonton) Cali is a shit hole, seattle (no, no for me) didn't complain much about the safely and big space in edmonton or calgary)

The only thing good about Seattle is the taxes there and the jobs. The weather is awful and the food is CRAZY expensive. LA is ironically wayyyyy more affordable in property, has better weather and a better college, while Silicon Valley would eat you up from the inside out. Girl, just go back to school. You will learn something new, the weather is nicer, the environment is more educated and contains less trash than the outside world. Bad people exist everywhere, so why not just have less of them? At least people are smart enough to be in a college unlike everyone else who is BEYOND dumb all throughout.
