Kaleb, word of caution… if you haven’t already, make sure your property is zoned for commercial/manufacturing, etc. so there’s no hiccups when beginning your business. Love your enthusiasm

She makes a very good point. It's pathetic that the government is so damn controlling and have no problem crushing peoples dreams over pathetically unnecessary zoning laws, but you definitely need to take her advice and be sure everything is good with all that. If you own it and it's not hurting anyone or anything, then it really doesn't matter, but the government isn't very reasonable, so it's definitely worth checking. Love what you've done with the place so far.

I just moved into a 1910 Craftsman in Quincy north of you guys. Your videos have really inspired me to do as much work on this house as possible by myself! My house is definitely not as rough as yours, but there is still plenty of work to do…my family thinks I’m a little crazy for wanting to do things like skim coating plaster and refinishing wood myself!

The house has a lot of original woodwork that I am going to refinish, but I am also going to finish the attic space into a master suite, redesign the closets, and some other smaller things. I just finished redoing the kitchen which was in desperate need of a redesign. I am definitely going to need to find a good source of wood to recut some of the more damaged moldings and also fix some spots in the floor!

I just love the sound of old machinery. I have a 122 years old Singer Hand Crank Sewing Machine and I just love using it for the smooth sewing and the sound. 🥰

One semester at college “Women in Trades and Technology” I was given the opportunity to use a lathe and absolutely enjoyed the whole process of making my project (candle holder) measuring out the item. You are so lucky to have your own lathe and use your talents to turn out many projects.

My husband was a machinist, and he was always adamant that keeping those tools oiled up is the best way to care for them. Put some good machine oil on them and rub it in with an old towel or rag. With the machines in the basement, it will ward of rust.

If you want to learn more about how line shafts work, you should check out the East Broad Top Railroad in Rockhill, PA. They have a completely intact late 19th/early 20th century machine shop complex, complete with boilers, stationary steam engine, and line shafts powering all kinds of belt driven machines. They’re in the process of restoring and realigning the shafts so they can start running individual machines off the steam engine. They may have some tips they may be willing to share!

We had a lathe like that, with a motor for the belt drive. It was set up to swing eight feet of wood on centers. Be careful! That is a lot of heavy word it can sling if not fastened well before spinning!

Firstly, congratulations on collecting the rest of that fantastic historic woodworking shop!! You are doing a great thing, keeping it all together and using it. Putting your story out on RU-vid means Mr. Brown and his legacy live on. Who knows, you may find a local retired woodworker willing to give you some pointers. My paternal grandfather was apprenticed as a cabinetmaker in England in 1917, and after moving to California in 1925, ended his career teaching furniture making in Adult School in Los Angeles in the early 1960s. A well known actress at the time took his class and her chair was put on display at a fancy Hollywood shop. He got his picture in the newspaper and everything, lol. I laughed when I saw the chair at your workbench!! Granddad had two like that; he'd picked up dining chairs with broken backs cheap (or free), cut them down and re-attached the fancy tops to the seats. I adore your fancy black iron levels!! I cheer you on with your energy and inspiration to follow this new path. A man-cave full of machines, and many things to fix and make should keep you happy forever. I've read that people who relax by working on hobbies and creating things live longer. Be safe in Mexico!! Nos vemos!

This video made me excited for you and for your future! Indeed, I can easily see a day when you will have your Hall and Brown working Museum sitting out back and up and running. Not only will you have the house and shop open to tours on weekends and/or request, you can have classes of industrial art students from the St. Louis area technical high schools take tours during the school year to learn about the history of carpentry, St Louis and the companies that built her. You can inspire and instill your deeply felt loves in these up and coming generations. May all these dreams come true for you, Kaleb!

Dude! I don't know why it took me this long to tell you about this...BUT, there is a super cool museum in Nebraska City called the Kriegel Windmill Museum. It is a workshop frozen in time, just as the last employee left it on his last day. You'd absolutely love it. If you and Kim go, go see Arbor Lodge too, and the Lied Lodge, and have some wine and produce at Kimmel Orchard. 🎉🎉🎉

Phobias, like the fear of flying, can be cured but it takes someone who specializes in phobias as well as a great intent to be cured. Very well worth it....especially if your health insurance covers it. You may have explored the possibilities....😱...it will take commitment to do some deep exploration within your psyche.....

Your shop so reminds me of my Grandfather's shop in Dayton, Ohio. I loved the smell of the woods , the oil and the leather. I learned to turn posts on his belt driven lathe as a young girl. I recommend sharp tools and practice on something you are not too invested in! Try to enjoy Mexico and fly carefully!

For the lathe, you should look around and see if there is a Wood Turning Association near you. There is one up where I live in Minnesota and they offer tons of classes for very, very cheap to teach people the basics of wood turning and how to do it safely since it is such a dangerous tool. Could be a great resource if one exists by you.

If your not learning something new every day, you're not living life. Making mistakes is a part of learning new things. Very nice collection of tools! Enjoy your vacation in Mexico. I recently went on vaction in July, myself and traveled 5,200 miles driving across America twice and from Virginia to first stop: New Mexico, 2nd stop: Yellowstine Park, 3rd stop: Bonniville salt lake flats, 4th stop: back to my girl friends home in New Mexico to go to the small town where the T.V. series Breaking Bad was made. Then rested for to days before going back to Virginia.

That is wonderful that you have found your passion and you can build it up to make a living from it. You will likely be very successful because you love doing it and you will naturally put a lot of effort into everything you do (which you already do) and it really doesn't seem like work. It is really great to see a younger person stepping up to preserve the old ways of doing things to not only preserve the material items but also to preserve the old skills and methods that would otherwise be lost to society.
