It really depends. Most people nowadays have trouble separating fact from opinion. Opinion shows get more viewers, because they are more entertaining. So, they flood the airwaves with those shows, to get ad revenue, where they talk ABOUT the news, and don't just tell the news. Then if you couple that with the internet and people shouting their own opinions as fact and trying to echo chamber their beliefs, you wind up just having people gossiping and making stuff up. What most people call "the news" these days are just editorial articles in video form. Or like a film critic, but with politics instead of movies.
@Taricus
@Taricus Год назад
People get misinformation, because they listen to what someone else THINKS is really going on, take it as fact, and then run around and gossip about it to other people. And they typically watch whatever show says what they want to hear. They're essentially stopping into their friends' house for a cup of tea so they can all bitch about the same thing LOL! Public broadcasting typically has good news shows. They will even turn off the comments for their online shows. You can recognize them, because they will break the episode into a few parts. They do a news wrap where they just state everything that has happened, with no opinions. Then they will pick like two or three stories to cover in more detail (probably interviews too), and end with some good news or an art segment about film, books, or some art gallery. Like they might show a charity or interview a poet.

I don't know where you are from but here in this world gender discrimination and racial discrimination are still rampant. We still segregate bathrooms by gender. It is universally held that men will abuse women if allowed to be in a small room with the fairer gender. This is a form of bigotry against both men and women. Thinking that men will always be abusers and that women cannot defend themselves are both concepts born out of gender-based bigotry. We mock men for having jobs that are traditionally female base. We force women to comply to unrealistic beauty standards and teach them to spend billions in money and time each year to strive for this goal. We criticize men for noticing the beauty in women. We are still subjecting both men and women to gender roles and restrictions. It is just that the restrictions that we enforce today are so ingrained in our cultures that we do not see them as wrong - but rather common sense.

Six of them beat the existing _women's_ world record, it bears pointing out. This omission by Sandi, along with the way she proclaims it, is more than a little misleading. I looked it up because it sounded like she meant they beat the _men's_ world record. It is also misleading to say that 18 records were set at the 1922 women's olympics, seeing as there were only 11 events. Perhaps 18 athletes beat existing women's records, but only 11 new records could be set.
@memyselfishness
@memyselfishness Год назад
Obviously, I'm not going to look it up, but it could still be 18 records beaten. For instance, it could be a record for single javelin throw and also dual javelin throw. Alternatively, someone could've beaten a world record only for them to be surpassed.

The restrictive clothing of yesteryear while today, women are expected to dress in as unnecessarily revealing outfits as possible.
@klaxoncow
@klaxoncow Год назад
They wear lycra. Just as the men do. If we're talking about "revealing outfits" then who can forget Linford Christie's "lunchbox"? His tight-fitting lycra completely revealed to the whole world how big his penis was. Overtly and clearly. He might as well have run naked at that point. This is the thing. Folks talk about women wearing "revealing outfits", but won't apply that same standard to men. Men routinely reveal their entire torso, talking off their shirts. They could be on the field wearing nothing more than a pair of shorts, and are literally on the cusp of being charged for indecency if anything more is revealed. Yet no-one says a word in these instances. What I'm getting at is the notion that women have something special and different to men that should not be revealed. So folks will remark on women's clothing, on their appearance, on standards of decency - in tribute to this magical thinking - which they won't do for men, as men are not judged to have this special magical thing. But, you know, it's biology either way. And we won't fix any of our gender issues, while folks cling onto superstitious magical thinking. Women are not expected to dress in unnecessarily revealing outfits. They just wear much the same non-restrictive garments - lyrca - that the men also do, because whilst doing sports, you don't need your clothes working against you. And this shouldn't be a big deal. Why are you - and everyone else - making such a big deal of this? This is "special pleading". It's a logical fallacy. Stop it.

A choice would have been nice, but they knew their viewers would have complained and stop paying to watch if they couldn't guarantee women in spandex. It's a bit like cheerleaders. They exist purely to get the dads watching. Few other sports other than American sports seem to require lycra-clad and often under-age dancing girls to "motivate" the players or "hype" the crowd.

Ummm where did QI get their information about all of the runners finishing and 6 of them beating a world record? Sorry but that's just false. Do yourself a favour and do some research instead of being woke. The astonishing thing is, the fact that these athletes did actually faint and almost none of them finish, shows just how far we've come - Women are now equal to mean in terms of professionalism in sport, competitiveness in sport, recognition in sport - and all this has been done in less than 100 years, just brilliant and all due to to pioneers like these athletes. However to lie about 6 of them breaking world records really just undermines the true reality of their achievements and falsifies the timeline of women's achievements in sports. The record going into 1928 was 2:23.8, set by Lina Radke (GER) in 1927. Six out of nine athletes finished inside this time in the 1928 Olympic final, including Radke herself, who won gold with a new record of 2:16.8. However the record had already been broken twice in the summer months leading up to the Olympics, first by Inga Gentzel (SWE) 2:20.4, and then by Radke 2:19.6. And only three of the athletes in the Olympic final broke that time, so it is not true that six broke the world record in that race. (All info from Wikipedia...)
@itskarl7575
@itskarl7575 Год назад
*"The astonishing thing is, the fact that these athletes did actually faint and almost none of them finish"* No - that's precisely what didn't happen. All athletes finished, none fainted, and they were simply winded after finishing - which is absolutely normal. And as JRB pointed out, six of them _did_ in fact beat the existing world record. The existing world record for _women,_ that is, which Sandi should have specified. The reason she did not specify does seem to be that she wanted to give the impression that they were faster than the men, especially given the tone of voice in which she said it. So it wasn't a flat out lie, but it was a lie by omission.
