My favorite Commodores song! Written by Lionel and bassist Ronald LaPread, in memory of Ron's wife, who had passed away after a long and hard fought battle with cancer. I always loved the song, but knowing the back story made it that much more emotional and empactful for me. I shed tears of joy, hope and sometimes sadness. A great song will bring out all of your emotions.
You're so right about all the great music from different genres in the 70s. That was my teen-to-adulthood period and kids and parents alike enjoyed what they were hearing. This particular song, in my opinion, is the best Commodore song ever made.
The Commodores most successful period was in the late 70's & early 80's when Lionel Richie was the co-lead singer. The band's biggest hit singles are "Easy", "Three Times A Lady", "Sweet Love", "Just To Be Close To You", "Still", "Oh No", "Lady (You Bring Me Up)", "Sail On", "Nightshift", "Brick House", "Fancy Dancer", "Lady (You Bring Me Up)", "Too Hot ta Trot" etc. Lionel Ritchie went on to have a big solo career.
Their "Commodores Live" has the best version of this song. The whole album is a must-have. Ya, we had the best music. And the best music clubs for artists to hones their talents and for scouts to locate the best of the best to promote, the best music producers and audio engineers producing the best albums and record stores & stereo stores everywhere. it was hard to find a home without a stereo system. I think it made people a little less angry and a little more neighborly too. What killed it all starting in the late 1990s was the internet, file-sharing websites and the invention of the digital MP3 that allowed one to make perfect copies with no loss of quality. Suddenly nobody could make any money making and selling albums because people were illegally downloading songs instead of buying them. The whole world I loved faded away.
