The Y2K bug is one of the most frustrating chapters in IT history. When disaster didn't strike and planes remained in the sky, the overwhelming public response was "oh so it was just a big fat nada." Tens-of-thousands of engineers worked tirelessly, rigorously testing and patching their software, digging through numerous generations of legacy coding language, and they did such a stellar job solving the problem that the public was convinced there was no problem at all.
My brother-in-law worked insane hours in the lead-up to Y2K. All those IT nerds sacrificed HOURS of their lives, and people would have known only if they weren't successful. I definitely appreciated it!
@@garrettleeth3940 That's exactly the point @vest816 was making tho. You have the perception that Y2K was no big deal BECAUSE of those tens of thousands of engineers. If it hadn't been for their hard work, it could have been lives at stake.
I miss this time. Great music. Great movies. No social media. For me it was the start of adulthood and fun times. I travelled the world and could ask to sit with the pilots in the cockpit for hours. Great memories. A very different world to today ..
We had some, like dating sites and GeoCities (that's kinda social media, right?). It just didn't take over like what we have today. 2000 also gave us OC Remix, DeviantArt and Homestar Runner! It's crazy what 2000 had that defined the decade!
I was a freshman in high school in 2000, i remember we would use chat sites or "chat rooms" to hook up with pretty much anybody. There was no profile, no pics, you literally had no idea who you were talking to until you met in person.
I think the one thing I miss the most from 2000 is the optimism in the economy, in the future, in the country. Everything feels so doom and gloom right now.
That's what I tell younger people. They can't imagine how that late-90s optimism felt! It wasn't just that I was 20-21 years old and a college student with my whole life ahead of me. It seemed like EVERYBODY shared that feeling.
@ArtsyJustin actually 2001 and 2002 were downer years too, but the hardest hit was were investments within the tech and internet companies. Losses in those stocks starting in 2000 thru early 2003 was horrendous, and many either never fully recovered or took well over a decade to get back to previous levels.
Most of it was for me except for a significant segment of 2009 that lasted through most of the summer until the end of that year (I was born in 1991 on July 11).
The way seeing an anticipated yet unexpected episode of Timeline made my Sunday. I'm so looking forward to seeing each year's recap of the iconic 2000's decade, so thank you Weird History! 🎉
2000 was such a great year in general. Agressive inline skating was still popular, WWF, Lakers winning a chip, Eminem was at his peak, NSYNC, Britney Spears, that 70s show, friends, TRL!!
@@time2eleveate15 why did you run away from home ?! why did you put your family through worry for you Neve knowing where you were ?! did you think of that?!
As a recently turned 14-year old at the time, The Marshall Mathers LP and Perfect Dark for the N64 releasing on the same week right as school got out for the year basically encompassed my entire summer, along with everything Dragonball Z. What a time to be alive.
My husband and I were married on September 10 2000. Still married to this day. Unfortunately, the next yr on our first yr of marriage. 9/11 happened. Such a horrible day. I can still remember being at work and what I made for dinner that night. We had tacos. I love Timeline. Thank you for doing the 2000's. Great channel.
I got married on September 8th 2000. We were living in the US, about 250 miles from NYC, at the time of the attacks. We left the US in January 2002, bought a house in 2003, and I divorced him for DV in 2005. Wildest 5 years of my life.
Ironically I wanted to set my wedding for 9/10/11.... My husband vetoed that idea. Got married 9/21/13 instead. 9/11 is definitely one of those "where were you when it happened" events. I was 17 and attending high school in the middle of Brooklyn. I used to be able to see the Twin Towers from one of my classrooms. My husband lived in Queens and had an AWESOME view from there.
I do still consider 2000 the 90s, really anything before 9/11 was different times. Similar to changes post 2020 and 2008 where all kinds of changes took place
@@saulspeaks2557 So do other wars. There was a hlcaust in the 90's but nobody talks about it because the victims were not judeo-christian. There was an Iraq-American war in the 90's. Ethnic klensing of the Palestinians since the late 1940's. Etc etc etc.
@@benconway9010 You said it. Though I will say that this glorious era did technically start in the late 90's and marched on its gloriousness to the late 2000's.
@17:36 Talking about the Queen Mother- "She took the throne herself after her husband's death in 1954".... uhhh WHAT? No, she didn't, she was on the throne as Queen *until* her husband's death, at which time her daughter Elizabeth took the throne.
Came to the comments when I heard that to see if anyone else caught it. King George VI died in 1952, at which time Elizabeth became the dowager queen (the former queen consort of the deceased king). As someone who married into the family, she had no claim to the throne, so her daughter (also named Elizabeth) became queen regnant. As the mother of the monarch, she also became the queen mother. BTW, should Camilla outlive Charles, she will be the dowager queen, but not the queen mother, as she is of course not William’s mom.
As this series starts, I would like to remind the people who complain that their specific country or a specific event in their country wasn't mentioned, and now they're mad, that they are free to create their own video about the 2000s, center it around their own country, and post it on their own RU-vid channel. I'm so glad that they FINALLY brought Timeline back. Now to relive my horrible 20s!
Thanks again Weird History for the many moments of joy. Timeline is clearly all of our favorites in our heart. May the weird history team live a thousand years
Looking forward to but also dreading the next video. As a 13-14 year old, watching the events of 9/11 & seeing over 2000 people die on live tv was confusing & painful & eye opening. Now, at age 36, that day and that year pain me even more. And I didn't even know any of the victims or anyone affected by it. Most of my best nostalgia is pre 2001.
I was 15 at the time, ended up going to DC for college and got an analyst job in a federal law enforcement agency. Got to see a lot of other photos and footage of 9/11 not usually seen in public, and meet people who were trying to save lives that day. Sobering experiences.
Omg! So happy!!! Time Line is BACK baby!!! I had a 2 year old son and Freaks and Geeks was one of mine and my husband’s favorite shows. We didn’t get out much because our son was still a toddler and we were saving for our first house, which we purchased in April 2002 right before our baby girl was born in August 02’. We bought the house for $179.9 and the current market value is $424.9
WE ARE SO BACK!!! I was born in 2002, and can’t really remember much from before 2008 (when I started kindergarten), so it’ll be a blast to see what life was like in the first decade of my life. Although I’ve got to admit, would’ve loved to see the 1960s instead.. maybe next?
@@supersmashmaster43 School system here is wack, because I was born in late October of 2002, and school begins in August, so I had to wait until I was 5 to begin school.
I really feel for all the IT engineers who made Y2K the "non-event" it appeared to be. They had worked incredibly hard for _years_ to make sure things would be good. Glad to see this series back! I really enjoyed the others and I've been hoping for this! Though you got some info about Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother wrong. She was never Queen in her own right. The moment King George VI died, his daughter became Queen Elizabeth II. And her surname was pronounced Bowes-lion, not leeon.
Here are the top 10 songs of 2000, according to the Billboard singles chart: 10. He Wasn't Man Enough- Toni Braxton 9. Bent- Matchbox Twenty 8. Amazed- Lonestar 7. I Knew I Loved You- Savage Garden 6. Say My Name- Destiny's Child 5. Everything You Want- Vertical Horizon 4. I Wanna Know- Joe 3. Maria Maria- Santana featuring The Product G&B 2. Smooth- Santana featuring Rob Thomas 1. Breathe- Faith Hill
I really like the effects in the video especially when they time forward into the years like a whirlpool to have that 2000s aesthetic, I can feel the nostalgia running by
Thank you for bringing this back. This is easily going to be the decade I am going to remember most. Other things that happened in 2000 Jan 9 Malcolm In The Middle debuted on FOX Jan 10 The AOL Time Warner Merger which ended up being one of the worst mergers in history Jun 30 The Perfect Storm is released in Theatres Dec 27 After a three and a half year retirement, Mario Lemieux returned to the NHL and on that night he scored 1 goals and got 2 assists to help the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-0
Welcome back, Weird History Timeline! It's to see the 2000s covered, its my childhood/teenage era. As if sundays wasn't cool enough, it just got even better. Looking forward to the 2001 ep!
This is admitting my age a bit but I was old enough to vividly remember every single one of these things happening.. (Runs to find the 1980s videos) I forgot how much I enjoyed this channel.
I've been waiting for this Timeline2000's series to come out for a long time. Truly one of my favorite channels. Keep em coming. These timeline videos are so full of cool facts. If you need more ideas, how about a timeline Bathroom Reader encyclopedia edition
I was five years old at this time. I remember the Y2K, and then futurama ingrained it in my brain. The year 2000 was 24 years ago, almost a quarter decade. I want to go back to those simpler days, but we can't, only move forward, and remember that we age, and we will die. The journey we experience is a beautiful thing.
hopefully when we die, we can choose for our spirits to posses the bodies of our younger (toddler) selves in a parallel universe that started later than this one where everything is identical except for what you change according to your memories I for one memorized a few lottery numbers just in case that comes true
Seeing a Ken Griffey Jr. cameo makes my nostalgic heart happy 😊 ... single greatest ⚾️ player I've ever seen. If not for injuries killing his career, that sentiment would be ubiquitous.
26:28 "Partisan rancor has not been a problem in American politics since." Thank you citizens of the year 2000 for solving this problem once and for all!
In the year 2000, I was in 5th & 6th grade. Most of my life memories started that year with all the life events that happened. Can't believe that was almost 25 years ago! Time flies fast! :)
@@jamesmoss3424 For my college graduation anniversary day, I watched movies that were significant when I was in college. I watched them in this order...are you familiar with any of these movies other than Final Destination? x Can't Hardly Wait x Dead Man On Campus x I Knew What You Did Last Summer x Urban Legend x Final Destination x The Mummy x The Matrix
This moment has been thoroughly hyped up! So much excite!!!! This is especially dope for anyone who was born early 90's, hitting all early teen milestones during this decade. I was but a wee 7 year old this year.
