With the latest edition of AFC Asian Cup “Qatar 2023” is around the corner, let’s have a look at the history (timeline) of AFC Asian Cup host countries, Champions & Top Teams in each tournament. First edition of the AFC Asian Cup was hosted by Hong Kong in 1956. Then 1960 South Korea, 1964 Israel, 1968 Iran, 1972 Thailand, 1976 Iran, 1980 Kuwait, 1984 Singapore, 1988 Qatar, 1992 Japan, 1996 UAE, 2000 Lebanon, 2004 China, 2007 Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand & Vietnam, 2011 Qatar, 2015 Australia and 2019 UAE were the subsequent tournaments. Next edition of the AFC Asian Cup is supposed to be hosted by China in 2023. But later moved to Qatar. So that the tournament will be held in Qatar from 12 January - 10 February in 2024. Saudi Arabia is set to host tournament in 2026. Japan seems to be the most successful team with 4 trophies. Saudi Arabia & Iran have won 3 trophies each. Here it is listed the top performed countries throughout the history too and it will give you a clear picture the performances of countries such as Japan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, South Korea, Israel, Kuwait, Australia, Iraq, Qatar, China, United Arab Emirates (UAE), India, Myanmar, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, North Korea, Bahrain & Uzbekistan. Since the Qatar was able to become the last Asian champion by beating the Japan in the finals held in UAE 2019, they hold the current title for AFC Asian Champions.
Note:
- There was no official logo for the tournament until 1996. In 1996 the first official logo was introduced.
- There was no 3rd place match in 2019 edition & the trend is expected to be continued. So that losing semi-finalists are to be listed in alphabetical order.
- Saudi Arabia 2027 logo isn't confirmed yet.
