"Timeshift Troubles" - Gondarth's Video Memories - Episode 92

Back in the 80s and 90s, a lot of VCR owners used to timeshift, where we record our favourite TV shows and movies onto videotape to be watched at a later time. The ability to timeshift was certainly a convenience, but it did come with its own set of problems. Let's use my collection of VHS recordings to highlight some of those problems!

Thanks for watching, everyone who reads this! 🤣 First of all, thanks to TVManiac for that Engine Roll Call clip with the bad signal. I saw that on his channel, I figured it would be perfect for this video. What you see in this video are as a result of one brief sleepless night of curious thoughts. I started thinking about how video cassette recorders could be both a help and a hindrance. I started writing a few things, and I just couldn't stop. Despite me having to rewrite and re-record the section about the VCR timers (MID-EDIT!!!), I think this turned out pretty well. I never thought I'd find an excuse to talk about the Timon and Pumbaa/Lilo and Stitch tapes, so I'm happy this video provided the chance! Also, I believe this is the 3rd or 4th time I've talked about that static-filled Nick Jr tape. If I'm talking about the positives and negatives of VCRs, there's no way I could avoid it. This will more than likely be the last time that tape is featured. I don't see any other instances coming up where it'll be useful for a video. Anyways, come Monday, I'll be posting something about my plans for the next couple months, and I'll be revealing my next review subject, which will probably not be as long as this. Stay tuned, and enjoy the show!

🙂 What a great video and history on how you and we viewers used to watch and try to record our favourite Shows and Movies off the TV. As a kid, I had a lot of trouble on trying to set up the timer to record my favourites off the TV by using my family’s HDD / DVD Recorder which started to record about 3 Minutes late and then it all worked and taped perfectly fine up to the end and I did wanted to add them to my collection for memory reasons to what TV used to be like back in each of our childhood years and I even had no idea when our favourite Shows or Movies would repeat again like you mentioned in your video too. 📺 👍

Thanks very much for those kind words. Yeah, the timer function was always a giant pain, especially when you only have one chance to record what you're wanting. TV is just so much easier to work with these days....

@@Gondarth 🥰 My absolute pleasure and I love watching the content on your account, especially about your memories of your VHS’s and DVD’s in the Video Memories uploads! Including my favourites such as The Simpsons, Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Disney and Thomas the Tank Engine!

Awesome video dude! This video was helpful to me especially since having LOADS of recorded tapes that my parents and siblings taped from the 90s and 2000s. My family used to use a variety of different methods to record, the Timer on the VCR, simply just recording it without a timer or anything other than the record button and years later when Sky digital and Telewest introduced this “Personal Reminder” function in 2002. Then they would press record whenever that thing pop up on the TV.

By the time you could record content on Sky+, saving stuff to tapes and DVDs was so much easier. Have the Sky recording as a back up, and if the VHS recording failed, just redo it.

Another great entry. My problem was never having enough blank tapes and never having enough rooms on them. 😋 Having mastered the skill of VCR recording one day there was nothing worth recording as everything I loved on TV that hadn't got an official release came to an end. Was so gutted. Fortunately RU-vid later came to the rescue and was able to see old favourites again.

Funny thing is, I'm pretty sure my family had the opposite issue. We had plenty of VHS tapes, but we just kept reusing old ones when we were done with what we already had saved. It was long before the days when there was a big trend in saving vintage televised content, so it never occurred to us that things might be worth preserving 🤣

Pls Am I Allowed To Say If You That Exact Same Recorder As You Did Back Then. Or Is That A New Recorder That's Under Your VCR

If you're asking if I used my main VCR back in the day to tape things, I don't think I did. My mother used it primarily in her bedroom until 2007.

@@Gondarth Funny How It's Mainly VCRs Back In The Day. Not To Mention With DVD Recorders There Awfully Expensive And If Ya Wanna Buy One Then Your Gonna Have To Make Do With A VHS Or DVD If Ya Have A Recorder To Either Rewrite The Disc Entirely And Leave It Unfinalized Until Time Being That's Either Not Taping On It Again Or Just Leaving It. Or. As You Say Tape It Again If Your Sure And Make Sure You Fill The Disc Up Since Your Probably Gonna Regret Not Filling It Up With A TV/Movie. If We're On The Topic Of Recorders My Mother Taped Mary Poppins Off ITV3 Back In 2008 And It Wasn't Complete I Would've Been In Love With That Recording From The Late 2000s. I Have One More Unfinalized Disc Left To Rip Myself Which Is Something Around A Major News Report And My Family Playing Something Called The Itoy From Tape

And Im Wondering With That CN DVD Did You Make An ISO Off The DVD Or Did You Capture It With Capture Card

The normal CN footage was ripped years ago with Magic DVD Ripper. For this video, I recorded the menus and additional clips with Bandicam.

4:15 wait, you recorded CGI Thomas?
@Gondarth
@Gondarth Год назад
No, that's from someone called "TV Maniac". He had a clip of the Engine Roll Call that was recorded with a bad signal. I asked him if I could feature it in this video.

Any recordings of The Powerpuff Girls that ended up erased? Perhaps you recorded the Thomas and Friends party over one?

@@damianhendriks6162 I had a couple of Cartoon Network recordings that were briefly taped over. I don't think the Nick Jr Party had much left on it...

So the Nick Jr party tape used to be a Cartoon Network recording? Well, it did air series 5 episodes, which premiered in 1998, the same year as The Powerpuff Girls. Quite ironic.
