I got a G-Shock GW-7900B, I like it because its water proof to 20Bar My SCUBA instructor explained watches waterproof ratings to me. Water resistance ratings: 10m-good for rain 30m-washing hands 50m-snorkling/swimming 100m-minimum for scuba, good to around probably 60+ feet 200m good for deep diving (non-decompression dives) This shows the flaws in the watch industry.
Have worn this watch for years now. Almost every day since 2008. Had to buy one replacement due to my brother losing it in the woods once. Super inexpensive, accurate, tons of features and not too big or heavy. Love it. Only issue I've ever had with it is it will fog up after a couple dives below 100' (starting at sea level). This happened with both watches. Now I just dive without it. But for a mostly-dry watch that you don't care if it gets wet once in a while, this is it!
Been using my Ironman watch 3 years for my lawncare business. I like the timer function to track my time on different jobsite's throughout day. Like they say: it takes a licking and keeps on ticking. I will buy another when needed.
I've worn this model for years. It's awesome! I don't need an altimeter or a barometer, like the high priced competitors. This watch provides basic, useful functions. It just works, no dickin' around.
I have owned this watch for about a year and a half. It lasted 1 6mo deployment and my day to day job here stateside. It is a great watch. Great vid Nutn!
Ive got a luminox model 3150. Easily the most durable watch I've ever had. It's been through sand, mud, and water. For me that one time cost is worth the reliability. It is also nice enough looking to wear on a date or for holidays, for me it truly is the perfect watch
+nutnfancy you should try out the Timex Expedition Scout for a field watch if you don't mind using an analog watch. They are only about 35 bucks and you can use it as a dress watch.
My parents bought me an Ironman when I hit the sixth grade. I LOVED that watch. Easy to use, good-looking, comfy. I wore an Ironman until sometime in college, when I replaced it with an analog titanium Seiko. If I ever want to go digital again, the Ironman is waiting in the wings.
When I graduated flight school in 2005 I quickly went out and bought a cool pilot watch with built in E6B. Know what I wear now? Timex Ironman, it just fits my needs just as good and if it breaks what am I out, $25-30 bucks? Like you said Nutn, mo money for ammo. Keep up the great work buddy!
I think a lot of outdoors, military and preppers might gravitate to the ruggedness and functionality of the new G shock range man. Guys who might buy a BCM, Daniel Defense, Colt, LMT, LWRC level of quality might be ok spending $300 on a tough watch.
Currently, a Luminox Navy SEAL Colormark, Model 3067 (green). My sister bought it for me at my graduation. Unless I have to, I never take it off my wrist; it means so much to me and is EXTREMELY FUNCTIONAL. Before that, I always wore my Timex Expedition Camper, a cheapo that I wore for almost five years and is still ticking. I actually wore out the leather band ( I swam with it alot), and I just keep the time piece now. Both are wonderful watches that have served me well. Good review, as always.
Nutn, we need an updated watch review. How about the g-shock Rangeman, with an altimeter, barometer, compass, thermometer... could be really helpful for my trips out in the bush.
I Had one of these watches for YEARS, and thats hard use, i'm a member of the canadian armed forces and used this watch all the time in the field. 6 years on one battery finally it broke then bought a Suunto Core, and loving it! Great review
I'm still wearing the old school G shock, and have been since I bought it in 1989 ;-) Been all over the world with me when I was still in the Army, survived countless years working on Tanks, and all the jobs that I have done since. Been back to the factory for an overhaul about 10 years ago. No I'm going to retire it. Thanks for the heads up on the Ironman :-)
Had a Timex Ironman watch since training in the mid-80's. My first lasted for freaking ever - only needed to change batteries & the straps a couple times. Currently have the one shone @ 8:45. Awesome, tuff watches... thanks for the review.
i have a gshock i got for xmas in 2011 and worn it everyday since. its solar powered and has a 10 year battery life. has automatic time zone changes moon and surf measurements. about $150 but totally worth it. its blacked out in color. great vids by the way nothing calms me down at the end of a long day like some nutn vids
That mode you entered was so you can push other non-dedicated buttons to light it up and it will stay on for a few seconds each time without holding the button. I've had three of those Ironman starting back in the mid 90s. All three were only retired due to band failure. I am no diver, but when I was wearing these, I almost never took them off. They were submerged often and even after changing the battery, they do reseal at least for my light underwater use. Thanks for the real world reviews.
I like the Timex Ironman, NUTNFANCY, the black one looks good for casual wear and the orange one would be good for hiking and camping because of the color!!! Plus, for a $5000 watch I can get a lot of more important gear :-) Dont get me wrong I like the pricey ones too, as long as it fuctions, but for edc the durable timex, and gshocks are durable and comfortable
Nike actually makes some nice, low profile, streamline watches. They are mid-range priced I would say, running around $100 US, give or take. Nice durable construction and a decent amount of functionality. I had one about 5 years back and loved it then and I'm sure they have even more functions by now (as companies are wont to do). They have a wide range of colors also.
Worn the same Timex Ironkids for about ten years and been through four different straps. Time, date, stopwatch, alarm, timer, that's it. The best part is it's small to fit my skinny wrist.
I use the Timex Ironman Triathlon 200M water resistant. Bought a new one during basic training 10 years ago and it has lasted through a tour in Iraq, water resistance also helps with dust resistance. The previous Iron man I had since i was 18 so that is still with me I just havent replaced the battery. great watch does what I need and as a scout in the military it had all the functions I needed. Only thing I wish I had was a set of analog hands for emergency navigation.
I have been sporting the ironman triathlon for about the past 6 years...once while i was working for our local AHL hockey team we were loading equipment bags underneath the team's bus. Apparently i rubbed my timex against something underneath the bus pretty hard because the strap broke off without me knowing. When i later realized, the team had already left. I contacted the other teams equipment manager and he kindly mailed my watch back, I got it fixed and wear it everyday, Awesome watch!
I personally have the Casio G-Shock atomic with the analog face and digital functions. I is a lot clunkier and heavier than you recommend for EDC but it is a great watch that also synchronizes with Daylight Savings time. I have thought about getting a slimmer watch for more winter wear that doesn't get hung up in my jacket/gloves.
I saw my watch in the beginning, I've gotta give recommendation for it... The Casio G-Shock Touch Solar, mine is GW-M5600. It is solar charged, and atomic clocked from your local time zone. I have had it for three years and the battery still reads H for high, once it was M for medium and I left it sitting in the sun for a day, never been less than H since. I have changed the band for 11$ once and the bezel can be replaced, looks like a new watch again. mine was 80$. totally worth it!
I like watches, so I would never try to down someone for a particular one. The first one you talked about, the Casio. First thing that popped in my head was "old/Classic".
I used to have the Ironman. I always loved it until one day when the strap started cracking on me. Eventually it broke and now I am SOL because the bands could not be replaced. It was a molded in band. I kept the watch and still have it around someplace but my replacement watch is the Timex Expedition. It has a replaceable watch band but for me the cool thing is that it has a vibration feature for the alarm. That is what I use for my alarm clock.
A another comment stated, you can set T2 or T3 as the same time and change it to 12 hour and have that easy flip between the two. Keep up the good work Nutnfancy.
You are right on, "who cares." The watch you wear doesn't put food on the table in a hurting situation, zombie apocalypse or economic crisis. All it does is tell time. When your really living times doesn't matter to busy to notice.
Mine is Casio AQW-101, very good watch, has both analog hand and digital readout. Built-in thermometer and some kind of fishing timer, moon data.(never use that) also most of normal digital watch function etc. It's lack of Occasion mode compare to Ironman but I still like it. It's a birthday gift from my mom :D
Holy Smoke! I asked about this subject a long while back when you did an EDC video because I consider a watch to also be an EDC-able item. I have a Citizen Men's BM8475-00E Eco Drive Canvas Strap Watch. I paid just under $100 and I'll never have to worry about replacing batteries or winding it up because it keeps itself charged with light so it's both practical and 2nd type of cool.
Ive been wearing a smith and wesson field watch for a few years, I really like it its slim small diameter and low profile, its not one of those giant dinnerplates that most watches are these days, its got a 37mm case, so its not huge I do like the plain jane look. it comes with a black tan and green band, and for $30 it has served its purpose. although they are canvas and will get wet its not too bad
If you're looking for practical functions Suunto has some very cool watches. The prices are high which is not so cool but you also have to consider the value of what you get in return.
Casio and Timex make watches for each other. Lower end tend to be made by Timex, higher end Casio. Talk to your local Watch repair shop, they'll be able to tell you which model is made by whom. So if you ever wondered why both brands have so many similar watches, now you know.
Nutnfancy you should totally do a diving video dude! I know back in 2008 you did some dive knife reviews but a video of you scuba diving would be awesome!
Liked the topic. I haven't worn a watch for years, but have been thinking lately I should take a look at what is out there. Hate bulky, thick watches. The Suunto Core is freaking awesome, but way too big. It's like a Flava-Flav clock on my wrist. Thanks Nutn for the watch-talk.
I've had a gray version of the Ironman for a couple years now. It's the first watch that I've kept in one piece for any length of time. Honestly though, the reason I bought it was because the strap is directly connected to the watch housing. I have a parrot and she's destroyed other watches that have a pin where the strap attaches. She hasn't managed to wreck this one yet.
I own two, a Casio G-Shock, the newer 2012 model, pretty cool watch. I just recently bought a Invicta Pro diver, which I got on black friday for like 90% off. Usually like 600 bucks, I got that watch for 100 bucks. Beautiful watch.
Ive had my ironman for a few months now and i do love it. Its survived a few defensive pistol classes. But I am thinking of getting a G Shock because i hear they are rock solid.
FINALLY a watch review!!! Thanks Nutn!! I got a G-shock for father's day this year..... I asked it SPECIFICALLY for when I'm getting out there and adventuring. My watches end up getting thumped on quite a bit when I'm out. Thanks bro and keep up the great work!
Been rocking a Triathlon for over 25 years. (not the same one lol) Used it mainly for count down starts racing keel sailboat and catamaran races. On the plane to the Hobie Nationals on Maui in 85, 90% of the passengers (competitors) were sportin G Shocks, Triathlons or Ironmans. :)
i have an ironman shock, since in my country a cool watch is a burglar atractor, and i love it, they are more than reliable and easily replacable. but in hot weathers it can make the wrist a very sweaty place. love your reviews, if you want to dive with a timex there is the shock version that has the same resistance as the G-shock.
I have a Timex Pathfinder fishing edition. It calculates sunrise ,sunset, moon phases , and fish activity. I got it for my outdoor activities. It has multiple alarms with vibrate "silent mode". There is a hunting edition mode too.
My go-to watch is a Swiss Army Cavalry watch. My father gave me one when I was younger, and it's never failed me. Damn near invincible! I like the analog watches usually, but I can see the benefits of digital. Good video, yet again!
My wife bought me a Luminox chronograph more than ten years ago. Huge stainless steel case and bracelet. It's got radioactive gas lamps! The double anti-reflective glass is so clear my brother thought the glass had fallen off. A friend commented once that the big stainless watch was part of who I was. Most folks aren't watch people. Kids today don't even wear'em.
Got a Yellow LumiNox from my kids, for Christmas, last year. Haven't taken it off since. Love it. Only issue is the 2 band straps broke and you cannot buy replacements...thank goodness Gorilla Tape is black.
I have a Walmart watch called an ACQUA Indiglo.. A single battery lasted 11 years and it kept the right time for the entire duration. Lasted through my working at a grocery store in water, being hit and banged on things nothing better for the money. Still works to this day, purchased in 2002.
Bought my watch, a Rolex Explorer, at the Navy Exchange in Hong Kong back in 1975, for $160. Still wearing it. I've navigated across every ocean in the world with it.
I like the Tag Heuer, Aquaracer! Its a very durable time piece in fact the Navy Seals have used it when training to test the durability and it passed with flying colors!!!
Very true. So many people think all the SEALs use Luminox but they don't. Good marketing though, i'm sure it works on a lot of people. Hell they are cool looking watches just not my price range.
For the longest time I couldn't stand wearing watches they were either too uncomfortable or they fell apart. Till one Christmas my grandmother gave me another watch I thought to myself another watch that will end up in the garbage, but I gave it a try and I was surprise how perfect it was. Doesn't matter if I was hunting, hiking, forging, or anything else I through at it. Guess what watch it was that's right a Timex Ironman, its been going for two years now and will not quit.
I actually used to break Timex Ironman watches all the time. I break them weight lifting. I traded it in and got a Bertucci, G1 digital. It uses a Nato Strap, which doesn't break, and it is made out of Titanium.
In the AOPA Pilot magazine from April '12 their was a discussion between the expencive watches and the Times type watches and why one is better. When it comes down to it Timex won in my mind. I support the inexpensive watches because I don't worry about scratching them, besides I have had the same Timex for over 10 years and I still love it. Best $15 ever spent.
That moon function you set was the indaglo function, when you shake the watch or you wrist with enough force it will cause the watch to light up, sort of like the gshock one where it lights up when you turn your wrist. but this one can be disabled or enabled, wish my gshock had that.
I wore an ironman for years. The only thing that stoped me wearing it was because the pin that attaches the strap to the body broke the body so that the strap couldn't be attached anymore.
Also helium from scuba decompression chambers can seep into almost any watch regardless of the water seal and pop the face off unless they have a helium release valve.
I use an ironman when I'm exercising, but for everyday use, I wear a mechanical that has a camcorder/microphone installed. It's very nifty, for if you want to take a picture or a video quickly and don't want to fumble around with a phone. And it has other features too, like a rechargeable battery, compass, and computer webcam. And I have the same view on style. Practicality and functionality will always be cooler than style and good looks.
I have been waiting for you to do this video for a long time. While I may disagree with some of what you say I really did enjoy it, keep up the excellent work.
I cant even tell you how much I spent on watches... I have had enough to wear a different watch each day of the month. but you know what I seem to always go back to my casio G-Shock. A few months ago i picked up the new solar Atomic pathfinder with Anaolog hands.. I felt ripped off when I opened it because I didnt get to play around with it. As soon as I took it out of the box it was set. Never needs a battery change and the time is always 100% accurate because its beamed down from space!
I've been wearing a Timex Ironman watch, in one version or another, for about 17 years. For an everyday timepiece, it's perfect. I have a Skagen watch for ordinary dress occasions, but can't afford or justify buying a Tag/Rolex or other high end watch.
