Timex Q - All Hype or Retro Perfection? 

I was born in 79, so I bought this. Love what Timex is doing and I always get a ton of compliments on this thing. The Falcon Eye reissue came in last night. Very different from this one, but still 70s cool

What a fun review! The band of the watch reminds me of my dad! He had Timex’s with similar bands, and he also bought me a Timex when I was young. I’m 51 and now I have my eye on this fun retro Timex after this second positive review I’ve seen and my own appreciation of nostalgia! Thank you for your work!

Oddly I find the loud Timex ticking endearing.

the styling of this piece is right up my alley, i love the case shape, the worn yellow indices, the mesh bracelet, and as a casio fan that i find that style clasp to be very practical, infinite adustment. plus blue is my favorite color of watch dials. i'm not a big fan red and blue bezels personally, but i would overlook that no problem

Got myself one of these on the second release. Sometimes it's worth to pay that little bit more just for the look and design, even though as a fellow Scotsman it pains me to say it. Love mine - thanks for the unboxing Jody! ⌚

I brought my first timex ironman digital watch in 2006. I had a good first impression. I think timex is a respectable budget watch brand that know watches and still insist their own unique style. The Q may not be as timex as the ironman, but these multiple retro style elements on the Q definately shows off their deep and solid watch design experience and background. These history also make the Timex logo one of the retro element. If it reads casio, it might not be as balance.

Finally, someone asking the important questions. Also, I adore the Timex Giorgio Galli, but $450 for mineral crystal? Don't think so.

I saw someone wearing one today, immediately recognized it based on watching this video a couple of years ago. Looks fantastic in person.

I have a lot of residual affection for Timex. They were a brand that were my 'gateway drug' into the world of watches. I think they are the reason why I am not particularly phased with having a number of quartz watches in my collection (Quartz still had the feel of cutting edge technology in my childhood in the late 70s). This watch taps into the nostalgia vibe perfectly. I think it will not be for everyone - it is small and the strap is a little uncomfortable. But it is very easy to read, the movement is bulletproof and accurate and the lume is pretty good. The 'notoriety' attached to this watch is largely the result of those seeking to drive up the price. The price is a little on the high side (£159 - and is immune to the 20% discounts Timex offers) but it has found a place in my collection and affection partly on nostalgia, partly on kitsch and partly because it is actually a reasonable watch.

I've watched probably 20+ reviews of this watch and yours is the best among a few really good ones. Nice job and perfectly put "why can't it be both?". Well said! 👍

The best thing about the Timex Expedition is that tick. I find it very relaxing. I personally love this watch and will be adding it to the collection as soon as I get around to it.

Nice one Jody! Had mine sent over from the UK about a month ago and absolutely loving it! Yep, it's a bit pricey for what it is (especially trying to pick one up in NZ) but it's retro and it's fun!

I picked up the Todd Snyder version for $125 on sale, and I am very happy with it. It apparently actually looks like the original Timex Q from back in the day, has a more attractive dial, a better bracelet, and a much more useful timer bezel.

The timing with the ticking in the intro was on point!

Picked up this watch a few weeks ago and absolutely love it!! The watch wears great on my 7inch wrist. The band is a hair puller but that dies down after a few days and all the hair has been pulled haha I think the Q would look great on that Casio band that was in the video. The bands look similar in size.

Thank you for the video, Jody. I like the Q and I like the Q Falcon even more, but for my 8 in. wrist, it just wasn't big enough for me. I do love the retro trend these days with this, Spinnaker and some other brands.

I like the look but not the price. Definitely a nice watch if you’ve got the money to burn though.

I have my grandpas handwinding timex with tv dial and that same style bracelet. With original box! He wore it for dress only a few times, its mint. Bracelet isnt too bad on the wrist, love the clasp

I adore this watch and it has seen the majority of time on my wrist this summer. I also bought a Full Metal Skmei and it seems pretty quality so far.

I bought a Timex Expedition 15 years ago, yep it's loud, but it's never let me down. The time is always right, isn't that what a watch is for? I have many watches some expensive, some not. My Timex has earned a spot among them.

Your reviews are honest and spot on. I bought this watch about 3 months ago and have yet to wear it, not sure it’s for me as it feels cheap. Keep it up brother!

I can't believe first Timex reviewed! I love your channel so much that I didn't notice. Perhaps it was because you are a Casio admirer. The model you are reviewing is out of stock on Timex site, but the Timex Falcon eye is available. I have to say that I love Timex, but I have not purchased any above about $75.00. Nice look. It's truly a pet peeve of mine when the seconds hand doesn't align with the second markers.

Hey Jody, I love the re-issue (design, case, etc...), but I wish Timex would have forked out a few more dollars for a better quartz movement. The Seiko PC33 quartz movement in the Q is a $9.00 (USD) quartz movement (30-second deviation/month, no jewels), I wish they used one with more precision. Also, I wish the second hand more consistently and precisely would land on the second/min markers. I think these are legitimate requests for a $180.00 quartz watch.

Great review on this one. I love the look. They got that perfectly right. Unfortunately the price for a flimsy quartz is just crazy for me in our times.

I'm glad you addressed the noise issue. I had a similar experience with a different inexpensive Timex, and as compared to Casio - the comparably priced Casio makes almost no noise at all. This put me off Timex for good...

Nice of you to mention the noticeably loud ticking. I returned an Easy Reader because of it. Kept my 2 expeditions cause they don’t sound that loud IMO

Thanks for the review, I was wondering when you would get around to this one. Not a huge fan of this watch to be honest, but I do get the appeal. I've been looking to add a Timex to the collection as I've never owned one and I think it's going to be the Giorgio Galli S1 Auto. Really nice subtle details on that one.

I was so excited about the Q when I first saw it. Then I saw its price. Nope. I got the Navi XL Automatic instead (for £260). And I'm very happy with it.

Jody, nice review on the Timex Q Re-Issue, I was wondering when you were going to do one. Anyway I do have this watch and it is very nice, it does capture the late 70's well and like you, I have a bit of an issue with the band. I also noticed that the second-hand does not align with the outer second scale. Then there is the price, which is a bit high for a Timex, but it seems that they are trying to bring back their old models back with new more modern movements. You should check their website, they have a lot of interesting models, especially their hand-wound and automatic offerings. Anyway great vid!

$49 of watch , $130 of hype and nostalgia

So funny, I bought an expedition as well and that thing kept me awake, had to put it in another room.

I can see the appeal for certain people who are really into the Retro aesthetic, but frankly for $200 I just don't think you're getting a lot of watch for your money. That there are enough people chasing this thing that it's selling for more than retail is frankly mind-blowing

Its such a great looking retro watch from when I was 12 years old, I remember seeing them back then because my uncle wore one.

Really like this Timex. Will look super with some patina maybe fade the bezel like a true vintage. Great review Tick Tock.

Great review! Wearing mine as I speak! in bed awake at 2am... lol But anyway, very well put on what this watch is, and why people love it. Side note, not only has my bracelet pulled out some of my arm hair, but it has grabbed a beard hair on a few occasions and refused to let go! makes your eyes water lol. Still love my Q though!

my local AD just released this 2 weeks ago. I wasnt planning on getting it, but thought to see it in person and see how it goes. My god it was love at first sight, looks much better in the flesh. Very charming. Dont expect horology mastery. It is very overpriced. But it looks SO GOOD

Being a teenager of the 70s, this watch looks great to me. Perfect size too.

Great review. I held off on this one for months becasue the hype was just too much. But I picked one up on Black Friday from a local Mom n Pop watch shop and it's priced exactly where it needs to be if you avoid resellers and people trying to capitalize on the initial short supply by gouging collectors. Like every mass-produced watch the street prices will level off. From a Timex perspective, this is higher quality than the loud ticking entry-level watches they mostly put out and better than the Intelligent Quartz lineup they put out 5 years ago. This falls just under the TX line in terms of quality but at 1/3 the price (I have a TX for reference - they were shit quartz watches with sapphire crystals and terrible bands that sold for hundreds more). My second hand hit's all the marks too. (lucky I guess) Also, it's a reissue, so those whining about it not being an automatic or having sapphire, or pointing out the GMT bezel on a non-GMT watch really have missed the point entirely on this . During the era the original Q was made, it was totally commonplace for brands at affordable price points to homage designs cues from more prestigious brands (it's not a new thing). The original Timex Q was just that. Really you just have to ask yourself: do you want very accurate modern reissue of a Quartz homage watch from 1979? If yes, this is for you. If not, you can easily get a no-name microbrand that will be out of business in a few years, a modern mass produced Citizen, Seiko or Bulova watch from the mall that has little historical pedigree, take your chance with a vintage watch, or grab a chinese-made Rolex homage with a Seal Gull or NH35 with far better specs than this - and all would be around the same price as this Timex Q. Ultimately the hunt will be better than the kill and I'm glad I waited for this. The real reviews should be done in 2-3 years after all the hype has blown over. Happy hunting!

Timex has been on fire for a while now with lots of interesting and value based offerings. I think it's safe to say the loud ticking issue is a thing of the distant past. I have tried in vain to find a loud timex in every store that sells them . Thanks for finally breaking the ice with the Q.

I am thinking of getting a vintage 'made in GB' Timex as they were made in Dundee, which is the city of my birth.

I own some vintage Timex watches ( 60s Marlin being one), they're great timepieces. But I think the Seagull 1963 is a better value retro

Is it just me that finds the way quartz watch seconds hands never line up with the markings INFURIATING? I just can't cope with it.

I wish Timex offered more of their watches with mechanical movements. I don't care if it'd double the price to get a hand-wound weekender or Q, I'd definitely buy one. I don't wear my weekender because of the tick. I need to sell it tbh.

Beautiful watches, I wish to own the whole series. The price is too steep for a Quartz movement. For an automatic would have been acceptable.

The only thing that would make it more of a retro hair puller, would have it issued with a “Speidel Twistoflex” bracelet...I still wince at the very memory of those 😱. (And for all of you into “pain and fear”, you can still buy them on Amazon 😳)

I find it interesting that people who like watches and clocks don't like the ticking noise. To each his own but I find the ticking kind of cathartic

...my favorite Timex commercial... black and white television, left hand of screen man in a black suit,white shirt, black tie, plastic frame(black) glasses,straps on a Timex to a kids bikes wheel on the spokes. The kid rides through a huge puddle back and forth. The man removes the watch, camera moves in, close up, man says "Timex takes a licking and keeps on ticking". Thanks Jody!

Thanks for review. The Q is really cool and I like that Timex is upping their game somewhat. However, given my past experience with both Timex and cheap Seiko quartz movements I suspect a lot of folks will regret spending their money on these in a year or so.

I'm inclined to agree with you on your assessment of bands that tend to be hair nippers... my arms might be a bit hairier than yours, but I've certainly never been mistaken for Robin Williams... my daily beater is a standard issue Casio G Shock 3232 DW-9052, so you can surmise from that what type of watch band I prefer. Well lets just say I have a vintage Rolex GMT and one of these. And I actually prefer the TImex. its fuss free, cheap as chips (relatively speaking) and is an ironic one in the eye for all the brand snobs - so low key its cool. Great daily driver, unlike the now way to expensive to wear Rolex.

I have an expedition (approx 2 years) and I'm sure the ticking sound is now a lot quieter when first new (or I'm going deaf) wear it on some cheapo chinese nato straps, and is very nice for a weekend or casual watch

Timex does make some great little watches, but I don’t think this one is for me. I have a weekender chrono that is a real beauty, and I have a 1960 handwind that I got new when I was in third grade. It was my first watch, and it still winds and keeps perfect time! It’s a little worse for wear, but I mowed lawns, trimmed the grass by hand, and trimming bushes wasn’t kind to it either! In the winter I shoveled snow, carried in coal and carried out the coals. I put up hay,, hooked the weeds out of the beans, and helped around my aunt and uncle’s farm. All of this brought out a lot of sweat on a young boys body so the case is very corroded as a result, but it keeps very good time on the inside! It’s true what they say about a Timex watch... it takes a lick-in’ and keeps on tickin’.

I think it’s a fun Watch to add to your collection if you can afford to just have it for fun to put it in your Watch box with your luxury Watches as a nice vintage piece. However if you want it to wear daily then you are obviously going to opt for a Seiko 5 or a Citizen Eco or an Orient for this price. Like i say people with a Luxury Watch collection could afford one to just have for fun as a talking point. I think that’s the whole point of it’s release too. I have one and I absolutely love it. Nice size and look and so retro. Looks great sitting next to my BB58 and my Alpinist in my Watch box.

Day languages are English and Spanish (miércoles for wednesday).

I also got a Timex Expedition and enjoy the watch a lot, but I also keep it in a drawer. Can't sleep with the thing *tick!* *tick!* *tick!*

Hellllllo I was asking you to make videos about seiko baby tuna prospex before i buy it but Yesterday I bought two seiko watches Seiko baby tuna prospex And seiko chronograph 7t92 But I don’t know if i got the good pairs?

I think quartz here is perfect, even if it wasn't a reissue. I love mechanical time pieces but mostly the ones without any user-settable complications. I love quartz here because first of all its accurate and reliable, this watch in particular has a simple battery hatch which makes it a breeze to replace the battery, and lastly the day and date complication with a mechanical watch would make me worried when I am trying to rotate between multiple watches and having to set the day and date each time. Here, you set it once and forget it for 1-2 years, and just enjoy the look which is primarily why these sold like hot cakes in the first place.

Bought one tonight on eBay, slightly used...I’m excited and can’t wait. As a child of the 70s I love all things from that decade.... this design however has aged better than myself lol
