Traveled to one of the films locations...Key West Florida...to meet the cast...Timothy Dalton a Likable guy!!!
Dalton's first appearance as 007, The Living Daylights (1987) was critically successful, and grossed more than either of the previous two Bond films with Moore (Octopussy (1983) and A View to a Kill (1985), as well as contemporary box-office rivals such as Die Hard and Lethal Weapon. His second film, Licence to Kill (1989), although almost as successful as its predecessor in most markets, did not perform as well at the U.S. box office, in large part due to a lacklustre marketing campaign, after the title of the film was abruptly changed from Licence Revoked. The main factor for the lack of success in the U.S. was that it was released at the same time as the hugely successful Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Tim Burton's Batman, and Lethal Weapon 2, during the summer blockbuster season. In the United Kingdom-one of its critical markets-the film was also hampered by receiving a 15 certificate from the British Board of Film Classification, which severely affected its commercial success. Future Bond films, following the resolution of legal and other issues, were all released between 31 October and mid-December, in order to avoid the risk of a summer failure, as had happened to Licence to Kill.
With a worldwide gross of US$191 million, The Living Daylights became the fourth most successful Bond film at the time of its release. In 1998 the second Deluxe Edition of Bond's soundtracks was released. The Living Daylights was one of the first soundtracks to receive Deluxe treatment. The booklet/poster of this CD contains MGM's quote about The Living Daylights being the fourth most successful Bond film.
Since Dalton was contracted for three Bond films, the pre-production of his third film began in 1990, in order to be released in 1991. What was confirmed is that the story would deal with the destruction of a chemical weapons laboratory in Scotland, and the events would take place in London, Tokyo and Hong Kong. The film was cancelled due to legal issues between UA/MGM and Eon Productions, which lasted for four years.
The legal battle ended in 1993, and Dalton was expected to return as James Bond in the next Bond film, which later became GoldenEye. Despite his contract having expired, negotiations with him to renew it took place.Dalton surprised everyone on 12 April 1994 with the announcement that he would not return as James Bond. At this time, he was shooting the mini-series Scarlett. The announcement for the new Bond came two months later, with Pierce Brosnan playing the role. Dalton reflected in 2007, "I was supposed to make one more but it was cancelled because MGM and the film's producers got into a lawsuit which lasted for five years. After that, I didn't want to do it any more."

Most criminally underrated Bond ever. After the camp and bloated excesses of the Moore era, Dalton more than does a commendable job in bringing the character back to reality. He had the right blend of ruthlessness and charm about him, and at times, showcases a vulnerable and often human 007. If the legal issues never happened in the early 90’s, we would of seen him do Property of a Lady/Whisper of Terror and then sign off with GoldenEye. What could of been, eh?

@@bobgoranthe bond in the novels and the bond in the movies are NOT the same character. He made it very clear that he wasn’t going to do Sean or roger because nobody can. I think Timothy Dalton really “Understood” bond the best, which is why to this day his performance is the most distinctive. Daniel Craig comes close, but there are times with him where he’s too invincible, crashing through walls like the Incredible Hulk, pulling a nail out of his back like Rambo. There was none of that with Dalton, he was tough but he could also be hurt.

Totally got that Bond was a killer, years before Craig was on the scene. Unfortunately the audience cared more for Moore’s wink-wink, martini swilling Bond then than a faithful adaptation of Ian Fleming’s character, so rejected Dalton’s rougher take. When Craig arrived, audiences were ready for a down and dirty Bond, and praised Craig for reinventing the series. But Dalton and Cubby tried that first in 1989 but audiences weren’t thrilled with that direction, so they returned to the heavy gadgets and over the top shenanigans as before.

Very likeable and genuine person. He has charisma and allow me to say, he is a 'calm power' as we say here. Unfortunately, critics of that era were used to have the Bond acting like a clown, accompanied with silly grimaces, with Moore wanted to portray a caricature. They wanted a comedy and not the real character of Ian Fleming. But instead of watching Benny Hill, they bashed the Dalton performance. This did damage and influenced the audiences. The result was that the series stalled and Dalton went away, which was a shame.

Dalton has so much stage presence. Only Connery in the same league. They just ooze presence. Even as himself in the interview, he's dressed just like James Bond would dress in the tropics in Fleming's novels, smoking a cigarette and discussing things carefully and sincerely as Bond would. He was tall, had the carelessly brushed dark hair, the cold blue-grey eyes, the long straight nose and the cruel mouth. Dalton WAS James Bond. He didn't get the chance to really do as much as he could have - thanks to Moore hanging onto the role for 2 movies too long and then years of legal battles as the studio was bought out. Licence to Kill is my joint favourite Bond film alongside Goldeneye, then somewhere right behind them would be Dr No, From Russia With Love, On Her Majesty's Secret Service and The Living Daylights (too hard to call a set order).

I love Dalton, and to me he looks and carries himself just how Fleming's Bond, the Bond of the books would. A clean-shaven British male with dark, chiseled features and cold blue slits for eyes, a tall, muscular frame but without being a bodybuilder, a dark head of hair that isn't overly styled but looks smart, the simple style such as the light blue shirt he is wearing here, smoking a cigarette, and, of course, being surrounded by luxury. Even down to the way he talks; he's serious and knows his stuff, but he's not boring and exudes a certain wit and charm, just a less flamboyant kind. Ian Fleming would have been very proud of Dalton I think, and would have easily pushed for at least a third film for him
